This document summarizes a presentation on the evolution of the Vscene videoconferencing service. It discusses:
1. The history of Vscene and its use by universities, schools, and content providers.
2. Plans to develop Vscene into a commercial product through a new partnership between Jisc and Ajenta. Ajenta will develop Vscene 2.0 and introduce charges in 2018.
3. An introduction to Ajenta, the new commercial partner, and next steps which involve further developing Vscene and transitioning it to a fully commercial service run by Ajenta.

With the initial test proving successful it became necessary to work out where to go next. So the aim of this project is – To enable universities to make real time video contributions to television broadcasters
Benefits… International – important new market for universities, would not be accessible without this over IP picture example of Durham Uni on Aljazeera
And all around money on travel is saved
Broadcasters want the insight that an expert can provide to the topics/headlines of the day
Problem: experts are located all over the country, and so usually are not near the network studios
2 options: Send broadcast truck to them, or bring expert to the studio. Both far from ideal, wastes time/money on travel
Push that these 2 things lead to only experts that are located near studios being used, and this therefore means there are a lot of experts that are overlooked – remote overlooked areas e.g. Norfolk, Cumbria, Scotland
3rd option: with a good enough network, can perform interview over IP

Leeds uni ran a small pilot to test if this would be possible
Was a one day test to check the connection and network had the quality and consistency that would be acceptable/was necessary
we had little to do with it DO NOT SAY THAT WE DID ANYTHING because we didn’t beyond having the network
Started to be approached slow – has taken a few years to get to this point.
We then started to research the area and found a bunch of companies that already provided this. We decided that we should work with Globelynx to connect universities to broadcasters
Ultimately, Globelynx was the most appropriate company for our purposes.
Few reasons:
All in one box, easy for universities to use – as can see from the picture it is quite small, great for unis which don’t always have much space
While the technology in the box would be fairly easy for us to put together (encoder, camera etc.) the reason we selected Globelynx was that it was a complete package, with the booking service and technical support and extra features like that.
Fully managed service – 24/7 monitoring and support of broadcasts and connection, rapid alert and response to faults, send out advisory emails to alert broadcasters of an interviewee’s availability
Phase 2 has a few stages, 1 – peering with globelynx, 2 – setting up trials at universities
Peering? Not just a connection
Also – the day that we spent with universities and broadcasters discussing what the broadcasters would want from the universities in terms of background/lighting etc.

As well as setting up the trial sites, we organised a day with broadcasters and several interested unis, not just the trial sites, to discuss the project and get details with regards to things like lighting and background.

Tv advertisement costs huge amounts of £ - this gives universities air time, to talk about relevant/important topics for free
Topic headlines have included the Ebola Crisis, Tesco Record Loss, World Cup 2014.
When universities see the cost associated we need to also demonstrate the financial benefits that they get back from this system to warrant the price
To demonstrate the financial benefits to sites – so are providing seed funding for 3 sites to enable them to purchase the equipment, and they will then allow other Janet connected sites to also make use of the system, in a sort of try before you buy

7 applications in total
Stats showing the usage of the 3 hubs in the first 6 months (sept 15-Mar 16)
Topics including: VW emissions scandal, Athletics doping, FIFA elections, Terrorism, Hillsborough verdict, Tim Peake/space etc
Noticed reduced usage at first 6 months – after staff moved on – need someone pushing this internally really
Also hubs - so far, not widely used by outside orgs, but sites advertised it locally and showcased it to others as a useful tool
