- Not for profit: every £ used for the sectors’ benefit. The sectors’ own organisation for digital Since incorporation in December 2012 Jisc the return on investment for the sector has been around £600 million. Jisc’s forward priorities are determined in close interaction with the sector. Deliver - shared digital infrastructure and services for universities and colleges. Flagship Janet network, security (Access management Federation), serving of datasets and citation indexes. Also bringing together a set of OA services. Broker sector-wide deals with IT vendors and commercial publishers – so brokering national deals for content and brokering framework agreements with particular vendors and services. ORCID consortium agreement – premium membership at reduced costs. Archivum for data storage services at more favourable costs Provide expert and trusted advice and practical assistance – We recently produced guidance for meeting the EPSRC expectation on their data policy.
- These are the main national bodies we bring together (building partnerships and consensus to help translate need to find tech solutions and this includes working through technical standards required for interoperability… We have worked with standards bodies such as DCMI and engaged with NISO through various initiatives…..
- (Aston University; Imperial College London; Northumbria University; University of Southampton; Swansea University; University of Kent; University of Oxford; and University of York.)
- Next step was to coordinate ORCID consortium membership for UK - Jisc has now: Consulted the sector to ask HEIs to express their interest in participating in consortium (including ORCID premium benefits), also consulting with funders and reconvened ORCID implementation group (ARMA, HEFCE, RCUK, UCISA, HESA, SCONUL, RLUK, Wellcome Trust, BL). Who would be interested in joining? 81 replies - 50 yes. 22 – not sure. Possibly at a later date 10 – no: systems not mature Considering what other support we can provide post the Jisc ARMA ORCID pilot – e.g. technical support. Depending on the number of participating institutions, this could reduce the cost of membership per institution to below $4,000, and would also allow all participants to access the benefits of premium membership at no additional cost.
- Jisc ORCID licence (30-99 members $135,000) So far 66 institutions have signed up UK membership (premium) based Jisc banding Bands 1,2,3 ($3,500) Bands 4, 5 ($2,500) Bands 6-10 ($1,500) So we have now recovered our costs ($159,500) Basic membership directly through: ORCID: $5,000 ORCID Premium membership: Small organizations (< US$ 200M in annual revenue or grants): US$ 10,000 Large organizations (> US$ 200M in annual revenue or grants): US$ 25,000 Non-profit organizations are eligible for a 20% member fee discount. Start-up organizations are eligible for a 75% discount. Presentations have been done for other consortiums who want to emulate/learn from what we are doing. Lyrasis in the US, Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) consortium and CSC Finland. Knowledge Exchange: – see other European approaches.
- RIOXX metadata application profile and guidelines (Research Papers) Set of metadata elements and guidelines. 21 metadata elements 10 mandatory 5 recommended 6 optional Worked with RCUK and HEFCE Does not cover all of the REF reporting requirements but it certainly will provide consistency for common key fields. (Date of deposit and exceptions)
- Also we keep a list of names and emails of people from the institution that signed the consortium agreement. Librarians and list of technical people and ask additional info for technical leads.

- The work will broadly cover the following: Respond to technical support requests via phone, email, site visits and surgeries from research information management practitioners and developers in ORCID consortium member organisations building integrations using the ORCID API. How can I join and can someone speak to my director of research. Gather technical interoperability requirements across UK universities and to, where appropriate implement developments or help to guide developments in key systems. Funding. Development … encouraging, inspiring and supporting developments in integration Design, organise and facilitate UK ORCID user community events to provide a forum for networking, sharing of experiences and collaboration
- Design, organise and facilitate ORCID hack days to enable developers in consortium member organisations to learn about ORCID development resources, to collaborate and to create new ORCID tools. Development … encouraging, inspiring and supporting developments in integration Set up and manage an online interface to facilitate sharing of plans and coordination of implementation activities among group members. Create documentation and other tools to inform users – where appropriate – or refer them to existing documentation and resources provided by the ORCID organisation.
- Documentation … support based around a “decision tree” / “flow chart” structure with links to other materials with appropriate levels of detail all the way along the path of ORCID adoption and integration. The idea being you can go to the stage you need now and find the right help and support; and also come back in 6 months’ time and find other materials to support where you are then.

- looking at the feasibility of integrating ORCID use through all the appropriate public-facing Jisc systems…. Work on other standards and identifiers.
- 105 participating IRs now using IRUS-UK The IRUS team (Paul Needham) has been working with John Salter to do some work with ORCIDs - harvesting a White Rose ‘irus-orcid’ via OAI–PMH using the RIOXX format. This will be developed further (subject to IRUS CAG support) but it demonstrates that exposing ORCIDS in this way supports author reporting.
- Providing consistency and standardisation…. RIOXX 54 repositories using RIOXX fields. More work needed on compliance. (includes ORCID field)
