Editor's Notes
Before we start, I’d just like to welcome a new member to our team (although many of you will have already met him!) I’ll hand over to Matt so he can introduce himself.
Jisc’s Building digital capability service provides:
Our Discovery tool, an empowering first step for staff and students to reflect on their digital capabilities. It will help them identify current strengths and areas for development. On completion, your staff and students will receive a personalised report with suggested next steps and links to free resources that can help them develop further. And new this year, you can add your own training resources.
For leaders, our organisational models set out what a digitally capable organisation might look like, and provide a step by step approach to help you wherever you are on your journey. Data dashboards provide a picture of how your staff and students feel about their digital skills and where further training may be beneficial.
Our service website helps you to find practical advice and guidance, whether you are interested in your own (or your students) development, are supporting others or are leading change.
Our community of practice is the place for staff and leaders to share experiences and spark ideas. Subscribing to the service will provide you with 2 priority places per organisation at each of our twice yearly events.
If you’re looking for more, our range of discounted training courses take you further and provide the support that you and your staff might need
We also offer expert consultancy to help you achieve your goals
So just to set some of the context around overall use of the discovery tool before moving on to the feedback from staff and students:
Students respondents were asked to what extent they agreed with certain statements regarding their overall experience of the discovery tool.
From right, dark blue was strongly disagree, orange=disagree, grey=neutral, yellow=agree, light blue=strongly agree.
Over 80% agreed it helped them assess their own digital capabilities (same for staff)
Over 80% agreed it helped them understand what digital capabilities were (70% for staff)
**Over 70% agreed it helped them develop their digital capabilities (just over 50% for staff)
Over 80% agreed the feedback was useful (over 70% for staff), the interface was well designed (over 70% for staff) and overall the experience was positive. (similar for staff)
Overall more positive benefits than staff identified.
For reviewing the overall experience of using the tool, respondents could select how much they agreed with seven statements.
Dark blue to the left = strongly disagree
Orange = disagree
Grey=neutral
Yellow=agree
Light blue=strongly agree
Experiences were mostly positive, as most users agreed with the statements.
Over 80% of staff agreed it helped them assess their own digital capabilities
Over 75% agreed it helped them understand what digital capabilities were
Over 50% agreed it helped them develop their digital capabilities – which is positive given the timing of the completion of the feedback form which is after they’ve completed the question set, and not had time to yet engage with resources. It would be interesting to return further down the line to reassess, which could be a focus of your organisations evaluation.
Over 70% agreed the feedback was useful, and the experience was positive overall. With just under 80% agreeing the interface was well designed.
And these quotes highlight the main benefits found by staff (3 in the top left corner) and students (bottom right corner); They liked the:
opportunity to stop and reflect
insights into their strengths and weaknesses
targeted suggestions
And they saw the relevance to future workplace
Recent evaluation data shows
Over 80% HE staff and just under 80% FE staff rated the tool either good, excellent or best imaginable
Over 90% of HE students and 70% FE students rated the tool either good, excellent or best imaginable
