Relational Frame Theory (RFT) explains how human beings utilize and frequently suffer because of how we interact with our minds. This presentation is part of a graduate course taught at NYU.
4. *
*Human behavior is governed by more than
operant and classical conditioning
*Relational frames can dominate over our direct
learning
*Therefore we can learn without direct
experience
8. *
*Jeopardy question: if the title of this slide
were the answer, What is the question?
*Which animals can communicate?
*Which animals have language?
9. *
*30% of the adult population who will suffer with a
diagnosable psychological disorder this year
*Major depression ranks 4th in terms of size,
cost, and debilitation of disease, and is
growing
*50% of people will seriously consider suicide
*10% of people will attempt suicide
10. *
*Dania, Fla. June 16 (AP)-A six-year-old girl was
killed today when she stepped in front of a
train, [after] telling siblings that she “wanted
to be with her mother.” The authorities said
that her mother had a terminal illness. (New
York Times 1993)
How are men like dogs?
How are dogs better than men?
How are men the parents of dogs?
This demonstrates that relational responding is arbitrary, i.e., everything is relatable to everything else (according to language).
But that just doesn’t seem like it should be true – right?
How can it be logical that everything can be the parent of everything else?
Our minds can justify/rationalize a particular “relation.” [different frames]

Human babies at 15 months (give or take) can reverse the direction (derive)
24 months they can derive 4 from just 2 taught

What separates humans from other animals?
Lots of them probably communicate – growl – not sure what that means
Which have language? Science can’t prove a negative, i.e., we can’t say something doesn’t exist. For example, I can say I have never seen Santa Clause with a white beard, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t exist. He could be somewhere I haven’t looked yet.

Endless….. We can imagine infinite number of things to fear or attract us, evaluate them, ruminate, struggle with the ideas of them, even if we’ve never seen one.
So what do we do when one pops into our head?
