COACH JONES JOHN Coach Jones arranged for Radio to always be close by his side found a way for Radio to “attend school.” taught the community in which they lived everyone deserved a chance, even if you’re a disabled John knew it was a crime to know his “letters” John would teach her letters and words at night after all had gone to bed John felt that it was important for all slaves to be educated He believed knowledge was the key to helping slaves break out of bondage

SARNEY JOHN Sarny, a 12 year old slave girl learned letters secretly she secretly took a bible from the church so she would have something to read making words with the blocks find newspaper clippings to read Sarny was willing to take the risk, even knowing that the penalty for reading was the loss of fingers or toes He was an educated slave, self-taught felt that it was important for Sarny to learn John would teach her letters and words at night after all had gone to bed even offered to teach some of the other slaves John was determined to teach her all he knew as long as she wanted to learn.
