What Are Radial Tunnel Syndrome,
Elbow Stiffness, and Elbow Arthritis?
A compression injury to the radial nerve is a condition known as the Radial Tunnel Syndrome.
The radial nerve runs by the muscles and bones of the elbow and forearm. This syndrome,
often confused with Tennis Elbow, is caused by the entrapment of the PIN, (Posterior
Interosseous Nerve) which is the most vital branch of the Radial Nerve and is located near the
outer side of the elbow. The Radial Tunnel Syndrome causes pain on the outer side of the
elbow and the pain often radiates down the forearm. Often occurring at night, the pain is not
accompanied by tingling or numbness.
Elbow Arthritis, causing stiffness, pain, dysfunction, and weakness, can be a result of
rheumatoid arthritis (an inflammatory, systemic disease), osteoarthritis (caused by wear and
tear), or post-traumatic arthritis (caused by dislocation or fracture). Elbow Arthritis should
initially be treated with non-operative methods that include physical therapy, steroid
injection, and elimination or reduction of painful activities. Anti-inflammatory and non-
steroidal medicines can help in reducing pain that is mild. A rubbery sleeve, that offers
warmth, stability, and compression, can be worn over the elbow for reducing the pain.
Elbow Stiffness is a common post-injury condition. The joint capsule, a balloon-like structure
around the elbow, is usually the principal structure responsible for elbow stiffness, though
there can be many other reasons. Extension and flexion get lost when the joint capsule
thickens and tightens up in the front and the back of the elbow respectively. All kinds of
elbow motion can get compromised when the joint capsule thickens and tightens up both in
the front and the back.
