What is Big Data, Hyperion and BI
Integration?
• Combining Disparate data sources into 1 Integrated
Reporting Source for Analysis.
• Let users worry about the data they want to retrieve
and not worry about the source
• Allowing users to do advanced analytics, utilitize
large data sets, enter data and calculate numbers
with the power of Hyperion, Big Data –but also have
the flexibility of Reporting in OBIEE
• The elimination of the need for EIS/Studio –”drill-
10. Innovate 2016
Why do it? The value of Hyperion, Big
Data and OBIEE Integration
• Easily include Budget and Plan data into OBIEE Reporting
• Integrated advanced analytics and large quantities of data into an easily reportable source OBIEE, e.g.
Customer Segmentations, Fraud
• Analyze Structured and unstructured data together, e.g. Web Logs
• Use one overall main reporting source
• Plan for a business that is proactive and not reactive
• Machine Learning algorithms that alert the business to issues all the way down to alerts in OBIEE
• Take advantage of OBIEE Alerts and let executives know when to review data—Budget Shortfall,
Inventory Shortage, etc..
• Structure data so that it can be found based on clear content and structure
• Real Time and Caching
12. Innovate 2016
• Keep integration simple and direct.
• Too much information and the purpose of the integration is lost.
• Cut down on information overload.
• Make the end product easy for users!
Integration Tips: Simplicity

13. Innovate 2016
Hyperion pure integration into
OBIEE—no relational source
integration
• Ok to use Value hierarchies for parent child dimensions
• Skip Gen 1 setting turn on
• Alias vs. Member names—use Aliases and bring in additional
fields/UDAS as needed
14. Innovate 2016
Hyperion pure integration into OBIEE
• Pure
Integration—
skip Gen 1
levels in
Hyperion—b/c
Totals you
don’t need..
15. Innovate 2016
Hyperion pure integration into OBIEE
• Hierarchy
Type—Value—
• For Parent
Child
Hierarchies that
are uneven
16. Innovate 2016
Hyperion pure integration into OBIEE
• Alias Usage—
select Member
names or Alias
Usage.. Can
also select
Columns
17. Innovate 2016
Hyperion integration into OBIEE—
relational source integration
• OBIEE is Relational and Levels focused—that is how it wants to view
and integrate with Hyperion.
• Do not use Value hierarchies for parent child dimensions, need to
have
• Skip Gen 1 setting turn off
18. Innovate 2016
Hyperion integration into OBIEE—
relational source integration
• Alias vs. Member names—need to pick out
Exactly where pieces come together
• Use the same underlying data source for
Integration if possible.
• Rebuild Hyperion cubes if needed
• Sync up concat Hyperion dimensions
19. Innovate 2016
Hyperion pure integration into
OBIEE—relational source integration
• Where this can go wrong
• Different underlying Data sources
• No Flexibility to create oracle/obiee synch dimensions/Members
• Hyperion Hierarchies that are parent child and relational Level Hierarchies
• Different business owners for OBIEE and Hyperion
• Make sure company can collaborate and work together..
20. Innovate 2016
Hyperion and relational integration—
map to levels
• Map Hyperion and Relational side
to logical levels
21. Innovate 2016
Hyperion and relational integration—
map to levels
• Map relational fields using logical
Levels. Match up fields.
22. Innovate 2016
Hyperion and relational integration—
steps
• Line up cubes—first create pure Hyperion Cube
• Then create matching relational only model
• Finally create integrated Hyperion and relational model
23. Innovate 2016
OBIEE Big Data integration—steps
• Import new Physical Data souce 12C—Hadoop or Cloudera
24. Innovate 2016
OBIEE Big Data integration—steps
• Make sure ODBC Drivers are setup to and from Source, need to
math RPD OBDC Name
• Drag over to rest of RPD
25. Innovate 2016
OBIEE Big Data integration—Tips
• Hive Access can be slow, be aware of how large a data set you
are using
• Impala also has a data source that can be used. Latency for Impala
queries was better
• Use caching/offloading strategy for large data sources
• Can use Real-time Streaming to setup data sources and OBIEE to
access data.
• Can use Hadoop as dumping ground for data that you don’t ETL/have
access to otherwise
• Look forward to using additional Big Data Sources—Spark, etc as time
goes on!
26. Innovate 2016
Big Data, Hyperion and relational
integration—steps in OBIEE
• Demo of basic steps in OBIEE Admin tool..
27. Innovate 2016
Big Data, Hyperion and relational
integration—Putting it all together
• Identify map out user common requests and group them together
• Tell a story with your data
• Show users clearly and easily where to get different pieces of data, the
more integration/combing/less thinking users have to do the happier
they will be!
28. Innovate 2016
Key Takeaways
• Understand the business value and how to integrate Big Data,
Hyperion, and OBIEE.
• Understand the capabilities and how to do integration using Big Data,
Oracle Hyperion and OBIEE.
