Editor's Notes
I believe we may all agree that a high data quality is the foundation for any qualified decision making.
But often data is considered from a siloed approach. We meet lots of skilled people out there, but they’re typically focused on their own specific domain and need for data.
This tends to lead to a situation where different departments work secluded from each other data wise.
Fingrid took a bird’s-eye look at business processes and data needed, and documented the resulting picture in close to one thousand requirements.
The solution acquired complies with these requirement and Fingrid has established a coherent setup establishing / guaranteeing the data needed in asset management, in grid optimization, as well as in many other business processes.
The solution is established based on two fundamental architectural strategies
We already discussed the coherent use of data.
Establishing a solution based on standard software products and a minimum of customization minimizes risks during implementation as well as in subsequent operation / upgrading / …
Honestly – anyone is able to say: We can develop that… At Fingrid we did it.
But let’s zoom in and focus on GIS as one of the crucial components
It is GIS the grid is documented
And made available to the asset management solution
As well as extracted in standard format for use in grid planning and grid operation
Acquiring the data needed to support business processes must be based on the right data model
ArcGIS allows anyone to create data models, and there are thus many data models out there.
The Powel PowerGrid data model was implemented at Fingrid
Example from Fingrid – an advanced 400 / 110 / 21 /0,4 kV substation
Connected to overhead lines
Advanced neutral network documentation
This substation and the entire Fingrid grid is the starting point based on data migration.
The real gain / value lies in the architectural decision that data should be entered once and distributed as needed
Through integration the data in GIS is made available throughout the ELVIS solution
And – as you’ll see later – data from other parts of ELVIS is made available in GIS
Fingrid has myriads of assets throughout Finland.
In order to locate the right asset these are related to locations ordered hierarchically. This location / hierarchy is documented in GIS from where it’s made available to Maximo.
Besides saving the asset management team from lots of work it ensures validated data quality.
Besides it eases validation that no assets have been omitted / forgotten
Besides – the geometric dimension offers users intuitive ways of locating / accessing assets and detecting patterns
The geometric dimension plays a natural role in asset managementEspecially with respect to:
Maintenance planning
Work management
So what are some of the immediate business values in the Fingrid setup with respect to asset management
Replacing outdated solution architecture with this new ELVIS solution ensures
support of a very high number of requirements
improved flexibility and ways of extending use thus allowing Fingrid to continuously improve performance
It safeguards the very high data quality needed in decision making
Another essential – and costly – business process is Right of Way management.
In the Fingrid case naturally focused on tree trimming in order to protect assets and prevent outages. (But it might also relate to parcel owner negotiating.)
Streamlining outsourcing and field crew access / feedback minimizes manual work.
Potentially refining tree trimming needs holds potential for minimizing quite big costs.
Approximately 11 000 kilometers of forest land under Fingrid transmission lines (this is about 76 % from Fingrid overhead lines).
Satellite image analysis
Drone surveying
Another important use of GIS data is in the grid planning tools and grid operation optimization
Through integration the entire grid has been made available for advanced analyses.
Analysis results are available in GIS
I believe these examples speak for themselves.
In a world of overwhelming amounts of data solutions revealing patterns and extracting the decisive information may make the difference between having information and obtaining knowledge.
And again the business value is evident
By providing the very high data quality allowing analyses throughout the grid,
Fingrid specialists may focus on their main competence rather than working with providing data
May perform analyses throughout the grid foreseeing issues and analyzing potential mitigations / actions
And why not go even further using the analyses results in asset management?
Above we had a glimpse of the Fingrid ELVIS solution and the coherent and consolidated use of data.
A setup in which ArcGIS and the PowerGrid data model holds a crucial role
It is therefore pivotal that ArcGIS holds comprehensive functionality streamlining the ongoing establishing and upholding a high data quality.
Bad data costs money
!
!
And with the ELVIS setup there’s more to come.
Fingrid has established a setup allowing them to further develop and optimize business processes
One way to do so, is by utilizing more data
Real time data / big data
Still just scratching the surface with respect to potential benefits this may offer business value in
More streamlined handling of outage planning and execution
Fault predicting and asset management
Preventing one crash in a transmission system means lots of saved expenses
…
Summarizing
Data is entered once and distributed as needed
ArcGIS holds a crucial role
Or – as we started out: with the complete solution architecture
Behind the Fingrid success lie
a thorough analysis and description of business processes in their entirety
a subsequent consolidated system architecture being based here upon.
Having worked with electric utilities and IT solutions for more than 20 years I would truly encourage any electric transmission or large distribution company to take a close look at the approach and the solution established at Fingrid
I fully agree with Fingrid in stating that ELVIS is The new point-of-reference tool for Electricity Transmission Asset and Operation Management
