The document outlines a plan to implement mobile technology at Fannin Elementary School using the 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) framework. It identifies three Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) related to student use of mobile technology for research, assessment, and teacher professional development. For each WIG, it defines the lead measures, scoreboards, and cadence of accountability to track progress towards goals of integrating mobile technology into the curriculum by certain dates. The plan discusses rolling it out over five stages - from getting clear on the goals to making technology use a routine habit.
2. THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION
Another model that we can follow to make a mobile technology
change at Fannin is 4DX, the 4 Disciplines of Execution. I’ve
set out what the plan would look like on our campus and why.
Discipline 1 – focus on the wildly important goal (WIG)
Discipline 2 – act on the lead measures
Discipline 3 – keep a compelling scoreboard
Discipline 4 – create a cadence of accountability
I’ve set 3 WIGs for the pilot group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade
teachers to focus on.
3. WIG #1
Discipline 1:
• Students will use mobile technology to do online research and learning on a
weekly basis by December of 2017.
Discipline 2:
1. During the months of August and September, students will use mobile technology to
research/learn online once every week in 1 subject of the teacher’s choosing.
2. During the month of October, students will use mobile technology to research/learn online
once every week in 2 subjects of the teacher’s choosing.
3. During the month of November, students will use mobile technology to research/learn online
once every week in 3 subjects of the teacher’s choosing.
4. During the month of December, students will use mobile technology to research/learn online
once every week in all subjects.
4. WIG #1
Discipline 3:
• A monthly chart will be displayed in
each teacher’s classroom so that
they can check off on a daily basis
that they have completed the online
research and learning aspect of
teaching to the students.
• Teachers will compare scoreboards
at their weekly meetings.
Discipline 4:
• Teachers meet on a weekly basis to
discuss lessons and planning. During
these meetings, teachers will discuss if
they met the goal.
• Teachers will also discuss what worked
and what didn’t work so that
improvements for the next week can be
made.
5. WIG #2
Discipline 1:
• Students will use mobile technology as an element of assessment for
3 school subjects every 3 weeks by May of 2018.
Discipline 2:
1. During the months of August through December, students and teachers will focus on
getting to know the device. Students and teachers are using the device to do research
and learn different subjects. No technology assessment will be due at this time.
2. During January and February, students will use mobile technology to create 1 presentation
in 1 subject every 3 weeks. Teachers will choose the subject.
3. During March and April, students will use mobile technology to create 2 presentations in 2
different subjects every 3 weeks. Teachers will choose the subjects. (One presentation for
each subject.)
4. During May, students will use mobile technology to create 3 presentations in 3 different
subjects every 3 weeks. Teachers will choose the subjects. (One presentation for each
subject.)
6. WIG #2
Discipline 3:
• 3 bar graphs will be displayed on a
bulletin board in the teacher’s lounge
(one for each class participating in the
mobile technology initiative).
• Each teacher will be represented on
the graph with an icon of their
choosing.
• When a teacher uses mobile
technology to complete a project or
presentation with their class, their icon
moves up on the bar graph.
Discipline 4:
• Teachers meet on a weekly basis to
discuss lessons and planning. During these
meetings, teachers will discuss if they met
the goal. Teachers will also discuss what
worked and what didn’t work so that
improvements for the next week can be
made.
• During the monthly technology meetings,
teachers will compare their place on the
bar graph. The first teacher to meet the
goal for the week or month will get a
“jean day” ticket. Opportunities for other
rewards will be reviewed in the spring
semester.
7. WIG #3
Discipline 1:
• Teachers will view and complete online professional development once a month
with programs like iTunes U, EdTechTeacher, or TCEA.
Discipline 2:
1. Teachers can choose between various online professional development programs and
opportunities to complete trainings and lessons.
2. Teachers must submit certificates or digital badges monthly beginning October 2017.
8. WIG #3
Discipline 3:
• A online score board will be shared
with the participating teachers.
• Teachers will be represented on the
graph with an icon of their choosing.
• For every certificate submitted, the
teacher’s digital icon moves up the
scoreboard.
Discipline 4:
• At the monthly technology meeting,
teachers will discuss what they online
professional development they have
completed. They will share what they
liked about it, what they didn’t like about
it, and how they will (or won’t) implement
some of the ideas into their 21st century
classroom.
9. SO, HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN?
The 4DX model tells us that there are 5 stages of change.
Stage 1 – Getting Clear
Stage 2 – Launch
Stage 3 – Adoption
Stage 4 – Optimization
Stage 5 – Habits
I’ve outlined how I believe the 5 stages will work for us at Fannin in the next slide
and a half.
• First, the reason for this goal has to be clearly defined. WHY? To create 21st
century learners that have opportunities to be creative, authentic, and published.
• Second, we must start the week that school begins. If we begin the school year
by using the mobile technology for research/learning and assessment, it will be
routine later in the school year.
10. SO, HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN?
CONT.
• Third, realize that it will take time for everyone to buy into the WIGs and stop
resisting. Continue holding your team teachers accountable. Ask questions and
get help from myself or the district’s instructional technologist.
• Fourth, you will want to change the WIG and lead measures to more challenging
targets. WOO HOO! We’re almost there. We’ve taken what seemed like an
impossible task, accomplished it, and are now wanting to make it even more
stimulating.
• Finally, this concept will become a habit, something you strive to do every day
without the mindset of a competition or goal. Now, it’s time to start over and
set a new goal!
