In order to maintain high hygiene standards
in all sanitary rooms, Atena tiles can be
coated with a special mixture of epoxy and
polyester resins, which has a specific power of
disinfecting and keeping hygene on surfaces.
This painting is available in a wide range of
colours, brightness and finishings.
Tests on coated samples, according to ISO
22196:2007, proved a 95% reduction of
pathogenic agents in 24 hours. Chemical
tests have proved its high resistance level to
salt corrosion.
Atena offers high stability metal tiles for the
most critical areas, walls, acoustic ceilings
to ensure privacy, sublimated coatings to
create the desired effects, getting the right
performance in all areas of an hospital.
For operating rooms as well for receptions,
technical solutions are offered to fulfil
new architectural requirements and to
satisfy environmental psychology and latest
generation design criteria related to ”Evidence
Based Design”.

the new false ceiling solution
for hospitals and science
laboratories.
Conceived to ensure the air
impermeability, the new false
ceiling system is made up of
tiles to be hooked, through
special springs on T grid
structure base 35, which will
be totally concealed.
Tile sides are properly shaped
to be equipped with sealing
corners and gasket along
its frame. The pressure of
the spring tights the ceilings
and prevent air exchange
between the plenum and the
environment.
To seal up completely the false
ceiling, the system includes
the use of a special perimeter
profile equipped with the
Syncro wings to be bent on
site, pushing tiles on the T -
grid.
Maximum hygiene level:
the Atena 35 Syncroevo is
powder coated with a powerful
antibacterial mixture of
epoxy and polyester resins,
which has the specific task
of disinfecting and keeping
cleanliness on surfaces. This
painting is available in a wide
range of colours, brightness
and finishing.
Installation is easy and fast
thanks to the use of the 35 T
- grid system and the Syncro
tiles to be simply hooked onto
the structure.
For seismic zone the system
can be equipped with the
patented antiseismic Atena
kit properly studied to meet
the new safety standards and

“L Syncro Evo” is the new perimeter profile conceived to ensure the
sealing of the system thanks to the use of its special wings. Wings
have to be folded in order to push panels on the gasket, which will
be previously placed on the perimeter profiles during installation.

ATENA AND THE
UNIVERSITY RESEARCH
Seismic design of suspended ceilings is becoming a topical issue, particularly after the strong earthquakes
that recently affected the centre of Italy.
Suspended ceilings can withstand grid damage, inner and perimetral connection failure, dislodging or fall of
panels. Moreover, the interaction with components attached to the ceilings, e.g., light fixtures, is another risk
factor. Collapse of suspended ceilings can become a safety hazard for occupants and prevent relief efforts.
Furthermore, failures can limit the functionality of critical facilities, such as hospitals, schools and airports.
Finally, economic losses are important aspects, as they concern both rehabilitation cost and downtime.
With the aim of studying the seismic safety of ceilings, a partnership between Atena S.p.A. and the Department
of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (ICEA) of the University of Padova has been established.
When and why did the
collaboration between Atena SpA
and the University of Padova
begin?
The partnership began in 2015
by the purpose of both Atena
S.p.A. and Department ICEA
of investigating the seismic
assessment of suspended ceilings.
In 2016 this collaboration was
formalized in a research project
entitled: “Safe ceilings - Technology
for static and seismic safety
of new and existing ceilings”,
supported by the European Social
Fund (FSE).
Atena S.p.A. demonstrated a
deep interest in the seismic
performance of its products and
realized the seismic kit, which is
part of its Seismic Line patent.
After the recent earthquakes
occurred in Italy, Atena S.p.A.
decided to further investigate and
optimise its products in order
to define their global seismic
performances.
The Department ICEA has provided
its resources and expertise
in Structural and Earthquake
Engineering to achieve this
objective.
Who are the members of the
research team?
Professor Eng. Roberto
Scotta is the supervisor of the
research; he is specialised in
design of innovative systems for
construction industries.
Eng. Laura Fiorin is a PhD
student in Civil and Environmental
Engineering Sciences at University
of Padova; her research topic
is the seismic behaviour of
suspended ceilings.
Eng. Sara Brandolese is the
grant holder of the Safe Ceilings
project and she collaborates with
Eng. Monica Iogna Prat, quality
manager of Atena S.p.A..
What is the aim of the research?
Initially, the research focused on
the behaviour of grid connections,
tested at the Department ICEA
Lab.
The research team is now realising
an innovative experimental setup
for the evaluation of the global
seismic response of suspended
ceilings and is developing
numerical models able to predict
the seismic behaviour of ceilings.
This approach aims to define a new
method to compute the forces on
these elements and to integrate
the formulations proposed by
seismic Codes. Finally, the project
will use the experimental and
numerical results to optimise the
existing Atena’s Seismic Line and
patent innovative technologies.
The innovative Antiseismic Kit
has been conceived to meet safety
and resistance requirements of
seismic areas.
All Atena false ceilings can
be reinforced with the Atena
Antiseismic Kit which integrates
the bearing structure with
crossing joint, reinforced holed
bares, fixing brackets, perimeter
profiles and properly hangers.
The action of the reinforced
seismic bars absorbs the seismic
force from the loft to the bearing
structure. On request Atena
supplies the antiseismic report,
where the quantity of antiseismic
bars to install is indicated.
EASY ANTISEISMIC
T-GRID
Regarding T-grid system Atena
has developed a special stainless
steel antiseismic reed, properly
shaped to lock the connections
between cross T profiles.
Atena antiseismic reed is
patented and it has a resistance
to tension of 240 N.
In order to give better stability
and higher torsion resistance
all profiles are equipped with
the special ATENA DOUBLE
STITCHING performed along all
profiles up to the coupling point.
To release the antiseismic report
for the installation of an antiseismic
suspended ceiling Atena S.p.A. requires
the following information:
• Location and intended use of
building;
• Type of construction of the building
and floors (masonry, ca ...) where
false ceilings will be installed;
• Updated Plans and sections 1:100
(paper or CAD) of the areas;
• Geological report, if available;
• Special prescription if required;

HIGH PERFORMANCE FALSE CEILINGS FOR
THE MODERN BURO
In the modern concept of office design the false ceilings
plays an important role to combine aesthetics and
functionality, this means: easy access to the plenum, fast
installation, integration with partition walls, earthquake
safety, acoustic and lighting comfort.
For this specific sector Atena has developed a wide range
of standard and custom-made high performance products
which reflect the most sophisticated architectural
requirements.
For this project in open space areas Atena Enigma
600x600 mm and 600x1200 mm, clip in system, with
Atena Lux integrated lighting body have been chosen.
For the meeting room: Atena Base 10 open cell which
sets the limits of the room inside the open spaces,
in passageways and corridors, Baffle 30x200 mm
interspersed by the Atena Lux Way suspension lamps
wich enlight the vertical design of Atena Baffle.
To achieve a perfect balance between reflection and sound
absorption, improving speech intelligibility, Enigma and
Baffle false ceilings are perforated and equipped with
acoustic tissue.
The lighting studio elaborated by Atena Lux, achieved a
high level of environmental comfort for each area of use.
Thanks to a full range of systems and solutions, Atena
develops a new idea of false ceilings for the office, a perfect
combination of functionality, comfort, and emotional
design.
