On today’s focus, we will be talking about, the Remix Culture.
What is Remix Culture?
Is it a remix of cultural music? Maybe…
OR
Is it something much bigger than that? Whilst doing my research as the task had suggested, I visited Wikipedia
And according to Wikipedia, it is the combination of existing materials to produce a new product
As well as permissive efforts to
Improve upon
Change
Integrate
OR
Remix the work of copyright holders. From further researching on the wiki, it stems towards the idea of
Read only culture versus read-write culture
As it is consumed rather passively by the consumers, Read-only culture contains information or product that is directly from professionals whom possesses authority on the product or information .
Furthermore, this had limited the involvement of consumer to simply consuming the media rather than taking part in the process of production and distribution.
Meanwhile, the Read-write culture contains a mutual relationship between the producer and the consumer.
It allows consumers to produce changes within the product if they have certain ideas on ways to improve the content, to which there will be no consequences or copyright issues occurring.
An example of this would the the remix video of the news report focusing on a woman who says “Aint nobody got time for that” the concept was so hilarious that it was turned into a meme, the image belonging to a news report, to which it soon had turned into its own remix as well.
If you simply type “Aint nobody got time for that remix” you’ll immediately stumble upon the video.
Such ideals also exist within literature; that being called “Remix Literacy” After researching the topic, I came upon different points pertaining to the ideals of Remix Literacy to which it focuses on further expanding the insights of students on:
Through the use of this method, students are able to gain a historic perspective on issues revolving on culture such as racism. It develops key areas of literacy skills. Furthermore, it enables them to use research tools and skills to remix multimedia content and thus form new interpretations of texts.
Thus, to conclude, remix culture is mainly the idea of having the audience gain access to the media to produce alterations based on their ideas and widening their perspectives on certain things within past and modern society, and their differing medias.
