The document outlines 5 fundraising trends for events: 1) VIP experiences that make donors feel valued through special access, 2) Immersive experiences that trigger strong emotions through interactive storytelling, 3) Virtual events that allow more flexible participation online, 4) Rewards like recognition for top fundraisers to encourage competition, and 5) Building online communities to foster belonging and support for fundraising participants. These trends aim to strengthen donor relationships and increase donations through more personal engagement.
3. “We offer special
experiences, for example
we invite people to a tour
of our labs, which not only
makes them feel valued,
but also gives us the
opportunity to build a
stronger relationship with
them and help pave the
way for future support”
Jade Brent,
Senior Events Manager
4. Passionate, personal voices
raise more money.
What are you doing anything
to make your most valuable
event participants
(and their loved ones)
feel and share like this?

Will this replace the gala dinner?
Save the Children’s 'Forced to Flee’
event was designed to share the
stories of real children who are
affected by conflict and violence.

7. Immersive experiences
trigger a strong
emotional reaction –
connection,
understanding, humility.
How can you make your
event participants feel like this?
• Corporate partnerships – could they
fund something like this?
• How could you achieve this digitally?

10. People want to do things on
their own terms – virtual
events tap into the rise in
DIY/community led
fundraising we’re seeing on
JustGiving.
And new tech like STRAVA is
becoming more popular and
enabling charities to be more
creative.
13. “Taking some inspiration from the tour de france
yellow jersey, we’ve also introduced a ‘green vest’
incentive, where our top 5 fundraisers get our running
vest in reverse colours to wear on the day, to help
them show off how awesome they are.
This has worked brilliantly, with lots of our runners
checking in with us in the lead up to the marathon
asking where they’re ranking, and really pushing their
fundraising to help them win.”
Jade Brent,
Senior Events Manager at Anthony Nolan
16. We’re seeing an increasing
number of charities building
communities for their key
events to create a sense of
belonging and to help their
participants feel part of
something bigger.

From Jade at Anthony Nolan:
For the 2017 marathon, we trialled organising lab tours groups for our highest value supporters a few months before the marathon, whereas previously we had always offered this after someone had completed their event.
This was great as it gave us an opportunity to chat through our runners plans, talk through ideas to help them raise even more, and helped us build stronger relationships with those supporters

WILL THIS REPLACE THE GALA DINNER?
Save the Children recently held an event called 'Forced to Flee' for its supporters, which was designed to share the stories of real children who are affected by conflict and violence. When entering the space, people were given a child's backpack and a headset, through which to hear a real tale of a child's search for safety. Throughout the immersive experience, people were led through dishevelled classrooms and chalkboards riddled with gunshots. At the end of the space, there was an uplifting play area, which was representative of the work that Save the Children does in order to bring play to children who live in areas of conflict. This experience served as a powerful way for people to put themselves in the shoes of a young child in need of aid.
Think differently about your corporate partnerships – could they fund something like this?
Could be done digitally – eg video, facebook 360, VR technology

We’ve also rolled something similar out for RideLondon which is working great too.
We’re seeing an increasing number of charities using our Campaigns tool to create a hub/community for their key events. Create a sense of belonging. Part of something bigger, together.
