Preface
Dhaka University Annual Report is being published every year as a brief
documentation of all the activities of the University, its affiliated and constituent
colleges and institutes. It presents academic and administrative works and research
activities of all Faculties, Departments, Institutes, Research Centers/Bureaus,
constituent and affiliated institutions, residential halls and offices. It thus becomes a
valuable source of research-material related with the university and a guideline for
taking administrative decisions.
The present volume is the 92nd
Annual Report of the University of Dhaka. In
addition to academic and research activities of 2012-2013, some important
photographs and informative appendices have been included here. Information
received from different offices have been presented according to principles
formulated by the Editorial Board.
Some departments, institutes, halls and offices did not comply with the guidelines in
providing information, which made editing difficult; uniformity in publication could
not be maintained due to the same reason. Despite repeated reminders some
departments, institutes, halls, offices fail consistently to provide information on
time. Requests were made to send soft copies (CD/pen drive/e-mail) containing
information along with printed ones and most of the Departments/Institutes/Offices
complied. Many thanks for their co-operation.
This year too, along with the Report in Bangla, an abridged version of the Report is
being formulated in English, which may be seen in the university website.
I express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the members of the Editorial Board for
working earnestly amidst all odds, in order to edit the Report. I also thank all
officials concerned with publishing the Annual Report.

Faculty of Arts (1921)
The Faculty of Arts, the largest in the University, consists of Sixteen
Departments : Department of Bangla, Department of English,
Department of History, Department of Islamic History and Culture,
Department of Philosophy, Department of Information Science and
Library Management, Department of Arabic, Department of Islamic
Studies, Department of Sanskrit, Department of Persian Language
and Literature, Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Department
of Urdu, Department of Linguistics, Department of Theatre and
Performance Studies, Department of Music, and Department of
World Religious and Culture. The academic activities of these
departments are conducted by the Faculty of Arts.
The admission of students into 1st
year Honors classes in the
Department of Economics, Department of Political Science,
Department of Public Administration, Department of Sociology,
Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Department of
International Relations, Department of Anthropology, Department of
Peace and Conflict Studies, Department of Development Studies,
Department of Women and Gender Studies and Department of
Population Sciences of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of
Law of the Faculty of Law, Department of Psychology of the Faculty
of Biological Sciences, Department of Geography and Environment
of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Science and four
InstitutesÑ the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, Institute of
Education and Research, Institute of Health Economics and Institute
of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies is also conducted
through the ‘Kha Unit’ under the management of this Faculty.
Distribution of classrooms for different Faculties situated in the Arts
Building and the allocation of space for various academic and
administrative activities including In-Course, Mid-term and Course
Final Examinations are scheduled by the Faculty of Arts. The
maintenance of the Arts Faculty Building is carried out by the Dean
of the Faculty of Arts.
Two research journals, one in Bengali and the other the English are
published every year from the Faculty. At the initiative of the
Faculty, broadband internet connection has been installed in the Arts
Faculty Building and Lecture Theatre. In addition to these, it has
been extended to all the offices of the Faculty and seminar rooms
and teachers’ rooms as per their need. Internet connection has been
set up in the Department of Psychology and the office of the Proctor
of the university.
Dr. Sadrul Amin, Professor, Department of English, has carried and
the responsibility as the elected Dean of the Faculty in this academic
year.

Freshers reception
On June 26, 2013 freshers receiption ceremony was held. To receive
the newcomers and to farewell the olders, The Department was
Jampacked with the willing participation of the students from Ist
year to last year. A charming and attractive environment was created
with the colourfull decoration, presented and through different
cultural programme. The programme was presided over by the Chair
of the Department Professor Dr. ASM Abdullah. The Chief guest of
this programme was the Dean of the faculty of Arts Professor Dr.
Sadrul Amin. Constructive and informative speeches of the teachers
made the students alive and enlighted.

Department Activities
Department of Urdu as an integral part of student’s curriculum
activities, the department organizes study tour every year. The
students of this department actively participate in the various
games/events like Inter-Department Football, Cricket and Basketball.
A discussion was held and also a doa was offered at the department
on the occasion of International Mother Language Day. The
department organized literary and cultural competitions-2013 for the
second time in its history. Honourable Dean, Faculty of Arts,
University of Dhaka Professor Dr. Sadrul Amin handed over prizes
among the winners. The Department has started its activity to form
Urdu Alumni Association. The Website of the Department has
already been activated.

Departmental activities
Sanskrit Debating Club (SDC) : Sanskrit Debating Club was
established on 10th
November in 2012, patronized by Professor Dr.
Asim Sarkar (Chairman, Department of Sanskrit) for making
creativity and enthusiasm among the students of this Department.
During the academic year the club organized some debate session.
Debaters of the club also participate many debate competition
organized by several debating clubs. Professor Niranjan Adhikary,
Miss Chandana Rani Biswas and Mr. Kalidas Bhakta respectively
worked as Adviser, Moderator (Debate) and Moderator
(Administration) in this club. Md. Al-Amin a second year student
worked as Founder Convenor of this club.

Departmental Activities
In 15 March 2013 Dr. Belu Rani Barua took the Charge of
Department as Chairman. Under her supervision Pali and Buddhist
Studies Department has been shifted at 5th
Floor from 3rd
Floor. In
2012-2013 sessions Dr. Rabindra Bijoy Barua Memorial Lecture
Fund is formed and under the fund a lecture is held. Professor
Mansur Musa delivered the memorial lecture on `Buddhist Hybrid
Sanskrit : A Review on the conceptions’. Besides, during the period
3 seminars and 12 lectures are organized under the Department of
Pali and Buddhist Studies to enrich the academic activities. Scholars
and Professors from Japan and India took part in the seminars and
lectures and presented valuable articles on Buddhist religion,
philosophy and Pali language. Ambassadors of Buddhist countries,
erudite personalities of the society and students and researchers of
Dhaka University also participated in the seminars and lectures.
Moreover, students of the Department took part in annual sports of
Dhaka University. This year Pali and Buddhist Studies Department
took place as runner-up in football tournament organized by Dhaka
University.
Professor Dr. Dilip Kumar Barua
During the period as part of academic activities Professor Dr. Dilip
Kumar Barua published two books namely 1. Mahavamsa and 2.
History of Pali Atthakatha or Commentary Literature, both Published
by Adorn Publication, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He also published an
article in the Journal of Dhaka National Museum (title : A Study on
the causes of the reformation of Theravada Buddhism in
Bangladesh). Besides, he delivered lectures on `Buddhism and its
Culture in Bangladesh’ respectively in a symposium organized by
Chittagong Samity of Dhaka, in a Seminar Organized by the
Bangladeshi Buddhist Association of Toronto, Canada, and in
Kathina Civara Dana Ceremony organized by the California
Buddhist Monastery, America. Moreover, he delivered two lectures
at Ryukoku University, Kyoto, Japan organized by the Department
of Buddhist Studies of the University on following topics :
1. A Preliminary Report on Dalit People in Bangladesh.
2. Popular Culture of Buddhist Ethnic Communities in Bangladesh.

Dr. Biman Chandra Barua Participated in the xxix Annual
conference of the Pacchimbanga Itihas Samsad held on and from 24th
to 26 January, 2013 at Lady BraBourne College, Kolkata. He

Co-Curriculum/Extra-Curriculum Activities
The Department of History encourages students to achieve academic
excellence as well as physical, social, cultural and professional
development. The Department became the Champion in the Inter-
Departmental Football Competition of 2012.
In response to the growing need of information technology for the
students of History, the Department established in September 2012
an IT Centre named Bangabir General M.A.G Osmani IT Centre.
The establishment of the Centre was possible with generous donation
from a Trust Fund commemorating Bangabir General M.A.G.
Osmani.

World Philosophy Day 2012
Department of Philosophy and Dev Centre for Philosophical Studies
jointly organised World Philosphy Day 2012 on 15th November
2012 at Dhaka University TSC auditorium. Ex Professor Department
of Philosophy Dr. Galib Ahsan Khan presented a paper titled
“Philosophy and Future Generations”. The Chief Guest was the Vice
Chancellor Professor Dr. A.A.M.S. Arifin Siddique. The Special
Guest was Pro-vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Harun-ur-Rashid,
Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Sadrul Amin. This
programme was presided over by the Chairperson of the Department
of Philosophy Professor Latifa Begum. A rally was arranged from
Oporajeyo Bangla to TSC. A Souvenir was published, edited by
Professor Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh.
Dev Centre for Philosophical Studies
The Centre regularly publishes two yearly journals in Bangla and
English, viz., Darshan O Progoti and, Philosophy and Progress
respectively. Dr. Azizun Nahar Islam acted as the editor of the
journals. To commemorate the 42nd death anniversary of the
renowned philosopher Professor Dr. Gobinda Chandra Dev, a special
seminar was held on 18 May 2013. The Centre also arranged three
seminars on philosophy. Professor Dr. Azizun Nahar Islam has been
the director of the Centre.

Centre for Moral Development
Centre for Moral Development was established in 2009 in the
Department of Philosophy with a view of keeping the courtry free
from injustice, crimes and corruption, and building up moral
consciousness and habit among people alongside acquiring
knowledge. The Centre also arranged three seminar this session.
Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman served as the Director of the Centre till
04 June 2013 and Professor Husne Ara Alam is the new Director
since 05 June 2013.

Meherpur under the leadership of Professor Ataur Rahman Biswas
and Assistant Professor A.K.M Iftekharul Islam. In this academic
session the department became runner up of both male and female
Inter Department Volly ball Tournament. Haji Awlad Hossain
Foundation Scholarship was given among 20 poor but meritorious
students on 27-06-2013.

Activities
After the establishment of the Department of Music it has been
arranging and performing various types of cultural programs besides
teaching music [B.A (Hons), M.A, M.Phil and Ph.D]. The
Department of Music has started its journey separately in the
University of Dhaka from 01 July 2009. The Department of Music
performs cultural program on the establishment Day of the
University of Dhaka every year. On 29 & 30 September of 2012 the
Department of Music has organized 2 days long Music Festival at the
TSC Auditorium. The Department of Music has organized different
types of programs like – Pohela Falgun, Nabanno Utshob,
International Mother Language Day, Independence Day & National
Day, Barshobaron (Pohela Boishakh). Besides, the Department of
Music has also performed in the cultural programs arranged by
Bangladesh University Grants Commission. In the University
programs arranged for the National Leveled persons at the Senate
Bhaban, our Department of Music has performed the musical
programs.

Seminar
1. As an ACRP-Bangladesh representative and keynote speaker
participated at the “Asian Conference of Religions for Peace
2013”. It was held in Kathmundu, Nepal on 22 March to 25
March 2013. This ACRP-SARRC Assembly focused on
religious violence, justice, peace and harmony issues. There
were more than 20 religious and laity participants from the
SARRC countries sharing a common goal towards a peaceful co-
existence amidst political turmoil. The assembly was followed
by excursion in various places of interest in Kathmundu.
2. Participated in a few program on Dialogue, Human Rights and
other contemporary issues organized by the DWRC and CIID of
the University of Dhaka and other similar organizations in
Bangladesh. Participation in a few Television talk show on
selected topics and recitation of the Holy Bible in various
National and International Programs. Rally and speeches on
environment and religion, youth formation, World peace day etc.

An International Seminar on “Human Rights and Religious Freedom
in South Asia” holds at the Senate Bhaban Seminar Room of Dhaka
University on the 24th
September 2012. The seminar was jointly
organized by the Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue
and Department of World Religions and Culture, University of
Dhaka. Dr. Tapan C. De Rozario of the Department of World
Religions and Culture presented the keynote paper. Professor Dr.
Patrick Gaffney of the University of Notre Dame, USA; Dr.
Waldemar Lies, Professor of Communication and Reconciliation,
Germany; Dr. Thomas Mathew, former President, International
Association for Religious Freedom and Professor Anbumani
Aurmugam of Annamaliai University, India took part in the
discussion. Professor A A M S Arefin Siddique , the Vice Chancellor
of Dhaka university and Most Rev. Takahiro Miwa, Head Priest of
Tsuyoshi Shrine, Nagoga, Japan was grace the occasion as the Chief
Guest and Special Guest respectively. Professor Dr. Kazi Nurul
Islam, the Director of the CIID presided over the seminar.

organized by the Department of World Religions and Culture and the
Centre for Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue (CIID) at RC
Majundar Auditorium of Dhaka University. Professor Abul Kashem
Fazlul Haque, Supernumerary Professor of Bangla was present as
keynote speaker. Professor KAM Saad Uddin Supernumerary
Professor of Sociology of Dhaka University was present as a

discussant while Dr. Sayed Anwar Hosain, Professor of History,
Dhaka University presided over the seminar.

World Religions and Culture of Dhaka University on February 19,
2013. Dr. Sayed Anwar Hossain, Professor of History of Dhaka
University was present as the Chief Guest. And Dr. Father Immanuel
K Rozario, Rector Holy Spirit Major Seminary of Dhaka was present
as a special guest. Assistant Professor of the Department, Dr. Father
Tapon De’ Rozario, Chairman of the Department Mr. Mohammad

“Kazi Nazrul Islam of 21st
Century and Inter-religious Harmony” on
May 25, 2013 at the Advance Research in Humanities Auditorium.
