role of Clinical Manager – Critical Care Unit (CCU).
Reporting to the Director of Nursing, this role is responsible for the comprehensive clinical management and
efficient and effective operation of the designated area with regard to human and material resources.
Utilising the philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and programmes of the Nursing Division as a foundation,
this role will plan, implement, control and evaluate methods and systems which support the effective delivery of
patient care and the efficient management of the unit.
Other key responsibilities in the role include:
Coordinate the overall care of patients and ensures the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care
Contribute to the development of protocols on patient care management based on best practice and NSQHS

In consultation with the Director of Nursing, support, encourage and implement change in the workplace
Participate in the interview and selection of nursing personnel
Collaborate with the Director of Nursing, in setting and managing the operational budget
Investigates areas of over expenditure and recommends to the Director of Nursing action to be taken as
appropriate
Utilise evaluation of care outcomes and audit findings to improve nursing practices and standards of patient
care delivery
Acts as a role model and resource person for clinical expertise within the Critical Care Unit and organization
at large
Leading a team of 40 staff, this role will require strong managerial and leadership skills whilst drawing upon your
depth of clinical nursing experience and knowledge. Offered as a full time position, a 0.9 FTE will be considered.
The position would ideally suit an individual with strong leadership and change management skills and extensive
senior managerial experience in both general and cardiothoracic intensive care. On offer is a competitive salary

CLINICAL LEADERSHIP AND EXPERTISE
Coordinates the overall care of patients and ensures the maintenance of a high standard
of nursing care within the designated area.
Maintains an awareness of any changes to patient condition, orders or other relevant
information specific to the area of responsibility.
Utilises appropriate resources to provide consultation, education, technical and
information services as needed to staff, patients and patient’s support group.
Collaborates within a multidisciplinary group to facilitate the delivery of comprehensive
and continuing care to patients.
Assists in the development and promulgation of organisational philosophies, policies and
procedures for the delivery of safe patient care.
Contributes to the development of protocols on patient care management based on best
practice and NSQHS Standards eg. clinical pathways,
Acts as a role model and resource person for clinical expertise to the rest of the hospital
as required.
In consultation with the Director of Nursing, supports, encourages and implements
change in the workplace.
Liaises with the Bookings Manager regarding patient admissions and discharge times to
ensure that patient throughput is managed efficiently.

For the designated area of responsibility, the Clinical Manager:
Works closely with the Risk and Resource Manager to determine the nurse staffing
requirements.
Participates in the interview and selection of nursing personnel.
Collaborates with the Director of Nursing, in setting the operating budget. Accepts
responsibility for managing the budget. Investigates areas of over expenditure and
recommends to the Director of Nursing action to be taken as appropriate and implements
as required.
Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a prioritised capital register.
Redeploys staff as necessary to meet patient care needs.
Oversees staff allocation to patients to ensure work loads are equitable, and
commensurate with the level of experience.
Co-ordinates an appropriate orientation and induction programme for all new employees
in relation to the area and hospital processes and practices.
Contributes to a work environment that encourages positive staff morale, team
cohesiveness, fairness, motivation and commitment through:
frequent interaction with staff,
the implementation of a leadership style appropriate to the demands of each
situation,

Undertakes the role of Hospital Coordinator on an early shift as required.
COMMUNICATION
Displays an advanced level of effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Complies with the hospital’s Code of Communication, and communicates the
requirement of compliance to staff and others.
Utilizes appropriate communication channels to keep self and staff abreast of local and
hospital wide issues and changes via memos, newsletters, minutes of meetings,
performance improvement projects, forums, etc.
Ensures that nursing documentation in the ward / unit, is complete, accurate and
complies with policy. This includes documentation of incidents and errors.
RISK MANAGEMENT
Takes responsibility for the integration of risk management into the day to day work of
staff, and advises staff of the following:-
Notify all patient incidents promptly via the appropriate incident report form.
Notify all non-clinical near misses and risks using the Hazard report form.
Minimise risks by practicing in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Undertake training and assessment as required to ensure competence.
Participate in clinical audits as required.
Participate in risk reduction projects as required.
Is responsible for the timely reporting of risks, identifying causes, and for
providing suggestions regarding possible solutions to minimise exposure for the
hospital.
Works in collaboration the Risk and Resource Manager regarding incident follow up and
risk reduction strategies.
