History
St And rew 's Privat e Hospit al, Adelaide, w as opened in 1936 - an init iat ive of Ms Janet
Hay, t he ow ner and Direct or of Nursing. In 1947 t he p rivat ely ow ned hospit al - and t he
land on w hich t he p resent hospit al st ands - w ere bought b y t he Presb yt erian Church
of Sout h Aust ralia and renam ed St And rew 's Presbyt erian Hosp it al.
Wit h t he inaugurat ion of t he Unit ing Church in 1977, t he hospit al's const it ut ion w as
changed and t he af f air of St Andrew ’s w as vest ed in t he Board of Governors inst ead of
t he church aut horit y. Subsequent ly t he hosp it al's nam e w as changed by delet ion of
t he w ord "Presbyt erian".

Clinical Manager- Critical Care Unit

 Leadership Role Managing a Dedicated Team of Nurses
St Andrew’s Hospital is a 207-bed private surgical hospital situated opposite Adelaide’s south parklands. It
houses nine state-of-the-art operating theatre suites, an 18-bed Critical Care Unit, an up-to-date Emergency
Department plus two procedure rooms, an Angiography Suite, a Day Patient Suite and arguably South
Australia's most comprehensive private cancer-care facility. Currently we are looking to appoint the key
role of Clinical Manager – Critical Care Unit (CCU).
Reporting to the Director of Nursing, this role is responsible for the comprehensive clinical management and
efficient and effective operation of the designated area with regard to human and material resources.
Utilising the philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and programmes of the Nursing Division as a foundation,
this role will plan, implement, control and evaluate methods and systems which support the effective delivery of
patient care and the efficient management of the unit.
Other key responsibilities in the role include:
 Coordinate the overall care of patients and ensures the maintenance of a high standard of nursing care
 Contribute to the development of protocols on patient care management based on best practice and NSQHS
Standards
 In consultation with the Director of Nursing, support, encourage and implement change in the workplace
 Participate in the interview and selection of nursing personnel
 Collaborate with the Director of Nursing, in setting and managing the operational budget
 Investigates areas of over expenditure and recommends to the Director of Nursing action to be taken as
appropriate
 Utilise evaluation of care outcomes and audit findings to improve nursing practices and standards of patient
care delivery
 Acts as a role model and resource person for clinical expertise within the Critical Care Unit and organization
at large
Leading a team of 40 staff, this role will require strong managerial and leadership skills whilst drawing upon your
depth of clinical nursing experience and knowledge. Offered as a full time position, a 0.9 FTE will be considered.
The position would ideally suit an individual with strong leadership and change management skills and extensive
senior managerial experience in both general and cardiothoracic intensive care. On offer is a competitive salary

Position Description
POSITION: CLINICAL MANAGER – CCU
Registered General Nurse Level 3
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Nursing
HOURS OF DUTY: Full Time No Fixed Hours, or as negotiated
SALARY: Negotiable but based on Level 3, Nurses Award
2010.
PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: Appraisal 6 months after commencement
thereafter annual performance review

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the comprehensive clinical management and for the efficient and effective
operation and running of the designated area with regard to human and material resources.
He/she facilitates staff development and orientation, promotes and undertakes quality
improvement and research activities.
Utilises the philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and programmes of the Nursing
Division as a foundation to plan, implement, control and evaluate methods and systems
which support the effective delivery of patient care and the efficient management of the unit.
Promotes and maintains co-operative relationships with medical, nursing, administrative,
allied health professional and ancillary staff.
Complies with all hospital policies and procedures, and relevant legislation.
Any other relevant duties as required by the Director of Nursing.
Relieves the Assistant Director of Nursing as required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
CLINICAL LEADERSHIP AND EXPERTISE
 Coordinates the overall care of patients and ensures the maintenance of a high standard
of nursing care within the designated area.
 Maintains an awareness of any changes to patient condition, orders or other relevant
information specific to the area of responsibility.
 Utilises appropriate resources to provide consultation, education, technical and
information services as needed to staff, patients and patient’s support group.
 Collaborates within a multidisciplinary group to facilitate the delivery of comprehensive
and continuing care to patients.
 Assists in the development and promulgation of organisational philosophies, policies and
procedures for the delivery of safe patient care.
 Contributes to the development of protocols on patient care management based on best
practice and NSQHS Standards eg. clinical pathways,
 Acts as a role model and resource person for clinical expertise to the rest of the hospital
as required.
 In consultation with the Director of Nursing, supports, encourages and implements
change in the workplace.
 Liaises with the Bookings Manager regarding patient admissions and discharge times to
ensure that patient throughput is managed efficiently.

HUMAN, FINANCIAL AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
For the designated area of responsibility, the Clinical Manager:
 Works closely with the Risk and Resource Manager to determine the nurse staffing
requirements.
 Participates in the interview and selection of nursing personnel.
 Collaborates with the Director of Nursing, in setting the operating budget. Accepts
responsibility for managing the budget. Investigates areas of over expenditure and
recommends to the Director of Nursing action to be taken as appropriate and implements
as required.
 Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a prioritised capital register.
 Redeploys staff as necessary to meet patient care needs.
 Oversees staff allocation to patients to ensure work loads are equitable, and
commensurate with the level of experience.
 Co-ordinates an appropriate orientation and induction programme for all new employees
in relation to the area and hospital processes and practices.
 Contributes to a work environment that encourages positive staff morale, team
cohesiveness, fairness, motivation and commitment through:
 frequent interaction with staff,
 the implementation of a leadership style appropriate to the demands of each
situation,
 problem solving, and rendering expert management/clinical advice and role
modelling,
 maintaining open and effective communication,
 facilitating opportunities for staff development through bedside teaching and
staff projects,
 assisting team members to effectively manage change and resolve conflict.
 Evaluates staff performance, counsels or reports as necessary, and institutes remedial
mechanisms where deficiencies in professional competence are identified. Participates
within performance review systems.
 Supports and participates in the promotion of educational activities and competency
development for nursing staff in collaboration with the Staff Development Coordinator.
Facilitates staff attendance at education activities.
 Rosters and manages annual leave for nursing staff to ensure that leave is taken
in a timely manner and that patient care activities are met.

 Monitors the economical use of supplies and equipment, and promotes cost
awareness, cost containment, and conservation of resources.
 Assists with managing the area’s equipment inventory.
 Assist in defining the need and selection of new and/or replacement equipment.
 Complies with the hospital policies in relation to equipment trials and major equipment
purchases.
Undertakes the role of Hospital Coordinator on an early shift as required.
COMMUNICATION
 Displays an advanced level of effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Complies with the hospital’s Code of Communication, and communicates the
requirement of compliance to staff and others.
 Utilizes appropriate communication channels to keep self and staff abreast of local and
hospital wide issues and changes via memos, newsletters, minutes of meetings,
performance improvement projects, forums, etc.
 Ensures that nursing documentation in the ward / unit, is complete, accurate and
complies with policy. This includes documentation of incidents and errors.
RISK MANAGEMENT
 Takes responsibility for the integration of risk management into the day to day work of
staff, and advises staff of the following:-
 Notify all patient incidents promptly via the appropriate incident report form.
 Notify all non-clinical near misses and risks using the Hazard report form.
 Minimise risks by practicing in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
 Undertake training and assessment as required to ensure competence.
 Participate in clinical audits as required.
 Participate in risk reduction projects as required.
 Is responsible for the timely reporting of risks, identifying causes, and for
providing suggestions regarding possible solutions to minimise exposure for the
hospital.
 Works in collaboration the Risk and Resource Manager regarding incident follow up and
risk reduction strategies.

WORK HEALTH & SAFETY (WH&S)
 Complies with all hospital policies and procedures relating to Work Health &
Safety.
 As a first line manager:
 ensures WH&S policies, procedures are followed in regard to safe work
practices,
 ensures that appropriate immediate treatment is administered/sought
following a nursing workplace accident.
 on its occurrence, follows up and explores with relevant personnel, the factors
contributing to the accident.
 responds to/reports any health and safety matter raised by any person.
 supports the ward/unit’s Health and Safety Representative in his/her role and
facilitates attendance at the WH&S meetings.
 Maintains an environment conducive to the safety of patients, staff and visitors.
 Ensures that procedures to safeguard the safety of patients, staff and visitors
are maintained and reviewed regularly.
 Uses resource people and educational resources to increase knowledge and
understanding of technology and safety codes relevant to the operation of
equipment.
 Conducts planned and impromptu periodic safety checks and audits within the
unit.
 Collaborates and works with Managers/Supervisors in other departments to
resolve environmental problems.
 Ensures that incident and hazard reports are prepared as necessary when
unsafe circumstances or events occur. Collects data on all incidents and
hazards and forwards documentation promptly.
 Advises the Risk and Resource Manager regarding patient and personnel
environmental needs, and recommends repairs and/or modifications.

It houses nine state-of-the-art operating theatre suites, an 18-bed Critical Care Unit, an up-to-date Emergency Department plus two procedure rooms, an Angiography Suite, a Day Patient Suite and arguably South Australia's most comprehensive private cancer-care facility.
