 All started back in 1500 B.C. when
identification of a parasite was done
 In 1922 an agency ASCP- American Society
of Clinical Pathology was developed to set
standards for laboratory professionals
 This agency is considered the “gold standard”
in certification
 In 1930’s the ASCLS required members to be
certified under the ASCP and maintain highly
educated and professional people
Median Pay as of 2012 is $57,580 per year
and average of $22.99 per hour and up
Salary is based upon region and years of
experience along with the proper
certification
Once distinguished as a Medical
Technologist or Medical Laboratory
Scientist many more opportunities are
attainable
If working in a lab you can become a Lab
Manager or some form of management
If working in another setting you can
become an instructor for laboratory
medicine or advance to research projects
According to www.bls.gov as of 2012 50%
of Medical Technologist work in a general
medical or surgical hospital; state, local,
and private
17% work for medical and diagnostic labs
 10% work for office of physicians
5% work for colleges, universities, and
professional schools; state, local, and
private
Need to have graduated from an NAACLS
accredited program and be eligible to sit
for a certification exam
Most places want at least 1 year
experience or some form of clinical training
Depending on the place some will hire
right out of school and give on the job
training with proper educational
background
Depending on the state you are residing is
what license or certification you will have
to obtain
ASCP is considered the gold standard in
laboratory medicine
AMT is mainly accepted down south, but is
not as highly recognized
Certain states like California and Florida
require an additional test for a state license
to be a Medical Technologist
Analyzing body fluids, such as urine, tissue
samples, and blood, and to record and
report results
Operate lab equipment and perform
maintenance as needed
Study blood samples by counting cells,
identifying abnormal cells, prepare blood
for transfusions by checking blood type
and compatibility testing
Training Medical Laboratory Technicians
 Currently most labs today have the “baby
boomer” population which will increase the
need for new laboratory specialists
 The increase in technology leading to an
older population and a society that has high
cancer rates will have a demand for
laboratory personnel to help diagnosis
disease
 Increase number of people who are insured
due to ACA will lead to the rise of need of
Medical Technologist along with other
healthcare jobs
According to www.bls.gov the job outlook
for Medical Technologist is expected to rise
22% from 2012-2022

I chose this field because that is what I am
currently working towards with this degree
I love working in the laboratory and by
getting the proper credentials to be
considered a Medical Technologist it will
give me more opportunity and
responsibilities in the lab
