2. BUILDING IN GARDEN
“ The entire earth, or at least its fertile portions, could be a
garden of paradise, with intensive agriculture in the irrigated
lowlands, protected wilderness in the highlands and well-
engineered, pleasant new towns sheltering both industrial and
agricultural workers on the less fertile lower slopes. In case of
India, much of the country has an ideal geomorphological
structure for realizing such a pattern of total landscape, in
which there would be room for all, including the creatures of
the wilderness... ”

- J. A STEIN
Second guiding factor was to seek the solution in nature of the
problem .
He found out the impact development was having on ecology & his
designs sought to find harmony . His solutions were – “ “Simple
and ecologically gentle “
Typical features from his buildings are – plants in courtyard ,
exposed brickwork , sculptures in fountain ,precast concrete
panels , window & shading devices , paving patterns .
5. His buildings typically merged the structure with the surrounding trees ,
gardens and pools : flowers wines and spills over the walls . He would
have vertical gardens , ponds , courtyards and trees . He was described as
“ BUILDING IN THE GARDEN “.
He used local materials where he merged his buildings with the
surroundings with nature .
He was good at working with local materials be it granite or glazed tiles .
