3. Piracy Definition Origin: Medieval Latin pīrātia, from Late Greek peirāteia, from Greek peirātēs. the unauthorized publication, reproduction, or use of a copyrighted or patented work. the illegal recording, transmission, or reception of radio or TV broadcasts.
5. Breaking the law There are a lot of people who would say that downloading a song after a song is perfectly legal and it's a method of enjoying music. They just do not realize by downloading these files, that they are violating copyright laws and they are committing an illegal act.
6. Piracy helps or harms? Piracy “helps” to increase product sales. ( Smaran,2008) Piracy “harms” the industries because they lose money. (Lessing,2004).
7. Focus Group The Focus group took a place in the University’s seminar room on the 15th of April at 18:30 pm 2011 before the Easter Break. The participants were equal there were 5 females and 5 males, Including the Lecturer.
8. Do not Download At the focus group we presented a short video clip which carried the title “ Do not download this song” a song which is against Piracy and is persuading all the users to stop downloading because downloading is a Crime. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGM8PT1eAvY/access 18.05.2011
9. Is it Free? Female 2 claims that the reason she is downloading is that she’s saves time and money which is a strong motive to everyone, I believe who downloads. She also believes that there is no reason to buy a Cd if she can listen the song for free via the internet. The problem is, that very few of it is being paid for”. The question, is it really free?
10. Is it Free? “You get one thing free if you bought another, or you'd get a product free if you only paid for a service”(Anderson,2008). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DLbkZUHF0c/ Chris Anderson/Free
11. Moderator/Male 4 The moderator suggest that internet companies can prevent downloading by the setting of filters in these parameters. Male 4 had the view that even if the companies will try to prevent piracy by setting filters however there are still hackers and people who are specialists.
12. Music Piracy Music piracy appear in the past by consumers who were copying a tape and passing it around to family, friends, and in general in their close circles. However there were also people who would use copying for selling in very low prices with any possible way. This old fashioned form of piracy did not cost the music industry much money.
14. Napster In the Focus group it was mentioned that Napster was the revolution in Music piracy because since then many other File sharing programs have popped up one after the other. Female 3 state that there is no variety in music stores and she couldn’t find what she is looking for. Dr Hajimichael view was that by the time he visited a Greek music store Metropolis he had exactly the same problem.
15. Spotify “Spotify is the “21st century Jukebox”. It keeps a library of millions of songs, both pop and classical, which users can access and play through their computer. Other similar sites have launched, but Spotify is novel in that it is both free and legal.” (Fitzpatrick,2009).
16. Piracy increase sales Paulo Coelho In a Design conference in Munich he talked about how uploading the Russian translation of “The Alchemist” made his sales in Russia go from around 1,000 per year to 100,000,then a million and more.” (Smaran,2008).
17. Conclusion In Conclusion before the Focus group my personal views about music piracy and piracy in general have changed dramatically. And the reason for this, is that Music especially is a very delicate area for me. The experience of making the particular Focus group helped me by improving my thinking and also seeing the other aspects of the specific topic. As it was mentioned Paulo Coelho stated that “Piracy” helped him to increased the sales of his book 10 times more. Piracy helps to increase sales? Or it harms the industries?
