Principles of Communication – Definition, Purposes, Process

Principals of Business communication
• Communication is a two-way process in which there is an exchange and progression of
ideas towards a mutually accepted direction.
• Communis in Latin means “to share ideas, concepts, feelings and emotions”
• The basic elements of communication are :
1. sender or encoder
2. receiver or decoder
3. message
4. medium
5. feedback
• When the communication occurs between either two or more than two business
people for the purpose of effective organization and administration of business
then it is considered as Business Communication.

Communication process
• Sender or encoder : one initiating the
communication process and encoding the
message
• Receiver or decoder: one receiving and decoding
the message
• Message : encoded idea transmitted by the
sender to the receiver
• Medium : channel of communication, each
channel having its own rules and regulations.
Example: oral, written, nonverbal.
• Feedback : communication back from receiver to
sender with the objective of minimising
communication gap

Parts of communication
• Communication can be overt or covert
• Intentional communication is explicit and is
called overt.
• Unintentional communication is implicit i.e.
communication that is unintentional or takes
place secretly. It is called covert
communication.
• Covert communication is important because
it is a challenge to find out what is not
communicated intentionally.

Channels of communication
• There is nothing that does not communicate. Body,
action/non-action, words/silence, dress,
environment, images, different types of things,
music, colour, etc all communicate.
• Communication is complex.
• Multiple channels of communication exist like body,
voice, facial expression, typing in electronic media
which are all channels of communication.
• Sometimes different channels are in harmony,
sometimes in conflict with each other.
• Interpretation is the decoding of the message.
• Sometimes communication is ambiguous i.e.
different interpretations of the same message(eg.
Poem)

Channels of communication
• Anything through which a message can be
communicated is a channel of
communication.
• Words(written or spoken) and non-words
like sound, colour, light, image and object,
body, environment, etc are all channels of
communication.

Principals of Business communication • Communication is a two-way process in which there is an exchange and progression of ideas towards a mutually accepted direction. • Communis in Latin means “to share ideas, concepts, feelings and emotions” • The basic elements of communication are : 1. sender or encoder 2. receiver or decoder 3. message 4. medium 5. feedback • When the communication occurs between either two or more than two business people for the purpose of effective organization and administration of business then it is considered as Business Communication. 02-09-2023 Prof. Krishna Roy, FMS, BCREC 2

Communication process • Sender or encoder : one initiating the communication process and encoding the message • Receiver or decoder: one receiving and decoding the message • Message : encoded idea transmitted by the sender to the receiver • Medium : channel of communication, each channel having its own rules and regulations. Example: oral, written, nonverbal. • Feedback : communication back from receiver to sender with the objective of minimising communication gap 02-09-2023 Prof. Krishna Roy, FMS, BCREC 3

Parts of communication • Communication can be overt or covert • Intentional communication is explicit and is called overt. • Unintentional communication is implicit i.e. communication that is unintentional or takes place secretly.   • 5. Channels of communication • There is nothing that does not communicate. Body, action/non-action, words/silence, dress, environment, images, different types of things, music, colour, etc all communicate. • Communication is complex. • Multiple channels of communication exist like body, voice, facial expression, typing in electronic media which are all channels of communication. • Sometimes different channels are in harmony, sometimes in conflict with each other. • Interpretation is the decoding of the message. • Sometimes communication is ambiguous i.e. different interpretations of the same message(eg.
