shh, this won’t
hurt a bit
teach, don’t talk
kristen gallagher - devsigner 2015
about me & why i’m here
i love to teach.
more than that, i love helping other people
teach stuff.
http://tinyurl.com/ng6gzuh
about you & why you’re here
turn to your neighbor
(say hi).
tell your neighbor the last thing you remember
from someone’s talk.
the plan today
our only goals are to:
● structure content to help people learn a concept
● create multiple ways for people to learn a concept
● be ourselves (but still give awesome talks)
you’re great and you should teach.
why teach, not talk?
teaching = creating a foundation to grow from
talking = boring.
but how???
change your talk into scaffolding.
and scaffolding is?
...a strong structure, aka:
not this.
scaffolding: super important
= how people learn new things.
(give people a shelf & a ladder.)
break up the content
create digestible concept chunks by:
1. applying a logic
2. matching content to that logic
3. using bloom’s taxonomy
let’s try that out.
topic: history of SaaS companies
1. applying a logic: chronological
2. matching content to that logic
-info on how they started (1990-now)
-info on how they grew
-info on what they’re doing now
3. using bloom’s taxonomy
excuse me? bloom who?
Evaluation
Synthesis
Analysis
Application
Comprehension
Knowledge
excuse me? bloom who?
Judge it
Summarize it
Understand it
Use it
Get it
Know it
back to our example:
topic: history of SaaS companies
3. using bloom’s taxonomy
give the info
help them get it
do an example (growth patterns?)
share example, teach it to a partner, add to
knowledge base
multiple ways of learning something
believe it or not,
some people aren’t like you.
Type Means Not Okay:
Visual-Spatial pictorially/spatially inclined just adding clipart
Bodily-Kinesthetic better when acting it out making everyone do
team building activities
Musical sensitive to rhythm + sound playing music in your
talk
Interpersonal likes to work with others having only group work
Intrapersonal likes to work independently having only independent
work
Linguistic ‘auditory’ + likes words having too many words
Logical-Mathematical likes reasoning + formulas only using math/code
putting it together
some basics: cut the noise.
it’s really important to write big.
it’s also really important not to use
comic sans.
finally, it’s also really important not to be
distracting.
accessibility
plan for:
● vision & hearing impairment
● community rules & respect
● people who may learn differently than you
checking your work
try to give your talk to a friend!
check for understanding.
ask for feedback on specific items.
if you want to talk teach about it

Teach Don't Talk: Structure Content for Learning with Scaffolding

  • 1. shh, this won’t hurt a bit teach, don’t talk kristen gallagher - devsigner 2015
  • 2. about me & why i’m here i love to teach. more than that, i love helping other people teach stuff. http://tinyurl.com/ng6gzuh
  • 3. about you & why you’re here turn to your neighbor (say hi). tell your neighbor the last thing you remember from someone’s talk.
  • 4. the plan today our only goals are to: ● structure content to help people learn a concept ● create multiple ways for people to learn a concept ● be ourselves (but still give awesome talks)
  • 5. you’re great and you should teach. why teach, not talk? teaching = creating a foundation to grow from talking = boring.
  • 6. but how??? change your talk into scaffolding.
  • 7. and scaffolding is? ...a strong structure, aka: not this.
  • 8. scaffolding: super important = how people learn new things. (give people a shelf & a ladder.)
  • 9. break up the content create digestible concept chunks by: 1. applying a logic 2. matching content to that logic 3. using bloom’s taxonomy
  • 10. let’s try that out. topic: history of SaaS companies 1. applying a logic: chronological 2. matching content to that logic -info on how they started (1990-now) -info on how they grew -info on what they’re doing now 3. using bloom’s taxonomy
  • 11. excuse me? bloom who? Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge
  • 12. excuse me? bloom who? Judge it Summarize it Understand it Use it Get it Know it
  • 13. back to our example: topic: history of SaaS companies 3. using bloom’s taxonomy give the info help them get it do an example (growth patterns?) share example, teach it to a partner, add to knowledge base
  • 14. multiple ways of learning something believe it or not, some people aren’t like you.
  • 15. Type Means Not Okay: Visual-Spatial pictorially/spatially inclined just adding clipart Bodily-Kinesthetic better when acting it out making everyone do team building activities Musical sensitive to rhythm + sound playing music in your talk Interpersonal likes to work with others having only group work Intrapersonal likes to work independently having only independent work Linguistic ‘auditory’ + likes words having too many words Logical-Mathematical likes reasoning + formulas only using math/code
  • 16. putting it together some basics: cut the noise.
  • 17. it’s really important to write big. it’s also really important not to use comic sans. finally, it’s also really important not to be distracting.
  • 18. accessibility plan for: ● vision & hearing impairment ● community rules & respect ● people who may learn differently than you
  • 19. checking your work try to give your talk to a friend! check for understanding. ask for feedback on specific items.
  • 20. if you want to talk teach about it kristen@edifyedu.com @kristenmaeve image credits: seanheritage.com and portland sun times
