2. Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster Graphics
• Raster graphics are made up of bitmaps, these are
pixelated squares which record the colour information
of that specific section of an image. They’re a fixed
resolution meaning that resizing a photograph can
distort the image.
• These pixelated images are kept in megapixels relating
to how many pixels the picture separates into.
• Raster graphics separate the image into little squares
that records the colour the image should be.
3. Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector Graphics
• Vector graphics are made of vectors which are
paths and strokes in an image defined by a start
and end point. Curves points and angles can be
used.
• Vector graphics can be stretched and the scale
can be increased and no definition is lost in the
graphic.
• These are best used for company logos due to the
ability to shrink and expand the image and allow
the quality to remain the same.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint photographic expert group
Used For/Example Used on photos in a web format, such as
to post on social media sights for many
people to view.
Advantage An advantage of a JPEG is the format is
universal, therefore it allows a multitude
of people to view the image universally
with no specific equipment or program
needed.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of a JPEG however is it’s
able to deplete in quality after multiple
edits caused by compression and
recompression each time the photo is
edited.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged image file format
Used For/Example TIFF is a desktop publishing which is
popular with graphic designers. It can be
used to create magazines and other print
type based media.
Advantage One advantage of a TIFF is it allows for a
multi-page document to be made, it also
doesn’t lose any quality due to
compression which allows the high quality
of the format to always be seen.
Disadvantage A big disadvantage of a TIFF is that the file
size is larger than most therefore it may
cause future problems when trying to be
emailed because it may not be able to be
attached.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphic interchange format
Used For/Example A GIF is used for short digital animation
which includes a series of images to be
played one after another in a loop to help
create the appearance of a video.
Advantage An advantage of a GIF is it’s a smaller file
than a video and allows for only a specific
section of a video to be shown.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of a GIF is the quality of
GIF’s is very low and poor, meaning less of
a clear image is shown throughout.
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap image file
Used For/Example A BMP is used to store bitmap digital
images it is often used on Microsoft
Windows.
Advantage An advantage of a BMP is there is never a
loss in compression allowing the image to
be opened a multiple of times and viewed
by many people with a high quality still
remaining.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of a BMP is the large file
size it has meaning that a lot of space is
needed to save the file.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop file
Used For/Example It could be used for the front cover of a
magazine, such as a fashion magazine or
men’s health.
Advantage An advantage of a PSD is that it allows for
image manipulation, saves layers so they
can later be edited without disrupting the
full image and supports transparency.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of a PSD file is that it
contains a large file size and the program is
required to open the file meaning that not
everyone can view the file with the high
quality required.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator Art
Used For/Example AL can be used to create company logos
which can be placed on bigger items like T-
Shirts and also on smaller items like pens.
Advantage An advantage of an AL is that it can be
scaled large and small and no loss of
definition is caused.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of an AL is the high
amount of skill required to use it and
create realistic and professional images.
12. FLA
Stands For Flash File
Used For/Example This is used to create animation and
games.
Advantage An advantage of a FLA is that you are able
to create a high quality file with a small file
size behind it. A FLA can also include
sound and video over the top.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of a FLA is that you can
only view flash files if you have a flash
player installed into your device and due
to the high use of this files not having this
feature could be an inconvenience.
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example A WMF can be used for many company
logo’s.
Advantage An advantage of a WMF is that like most
vector graphics it can be scaled large and
small with no loss in definition allowing it
to have a multitude of uses.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of a WMF is that they are
outdated and more professional and
popular programs and files are being used,
this means that WMF and used more
infrequently and could possibly give a
company the wrong look form a consumer
point of view.
15. Compression
Definition Lossy compression is the way in which file
sizes are reduced by decreasing the
amount of information saved.
Advantage An advantage of compression is that it
quickly allows for a lower quality image to
be sent to another person so feedback can
quickly be given.
Disadvantage A disadvantage of this is that images
become more pixelated as they’re
compressed as they save a smaller amount
of coloured squares each time.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A scanner digitalises physical images such
as sketches photos and mixed media
products and uploads them to the screen
to be edited.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A Camera captures an instant picture of
what is required for later viewing or
editing.
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A tablet is a piece of technology that
allows you to control the mouse like a pen
leading to enhanced control to create an
image.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? A good reason to optimise an image is to
allow it to easily be uploaded to the
internet and let it have an easy viewing
path.
How can you optimise? A photo can be optimised by reducing the
image size, reducing bit depth, reducing
resolution and compressing images.
Advantage to optimising Images that are not optimised usually have
a large file size and take longer to
download therefore optimising a file
decreases the file size allowing it to be
easily opened.
Disadvantage to optimising A disadvantage of optimising an image is
that by reducing the resolution of the
image, needed to optimise the image, the
high quality of the image is lost.
19. File Naming Conventions
What naming conventions could you use
when creating your video game assets?
when creating and saving files naming
conventions such as numbers and non-
alphanumeric characters can be used to
help identify and highlight specific files.
Why is it a good idea to accurately name
your assets?
It is a good idea to accurately name your
assets because in the future it aids to
finding them and allows other people to
get a quick idea and brief overview of
what the file contains before opening it.
20. Asset Management
Why would you use folders when storing
your assets?
Using folders when storing assets is very
important to keep all files easily
accessible and all in one place to be found
and make sure no related files are lost.
What folders would you create and what
would you save within them
I would create multiple folders and save
within them things related to that
category such as ‘Print based media’ and
within it all files such as research and ideas
designed inside of it.
