Introduction to :
Fuses
Fuses
In electronics and electrical engineering, a fuse (from
the French fusée, Italian fuso, "spindle") is a type of low
resistance resistor that acts as a sacrificial device to
provide overcurrent protection, of either the load or
source circuit. Its essential component is a metal wire
or strip that melts when too much current flows through
it, interrupting the circuit that it connects.

M i n i a t u r e f u s e s
A miniature fuse is a small type of low resistance
resistor that normally act as sacrificial providing
overcurrent protection of the load or source
circuit in electrical equipment and machinery.
Miniature fuses are used indoors and in
electrical appliances.
They are easily potable and can be fitted or
removed from a given circuit with a lot of ease.
S e m i c o n d u c t o r f u s e s
Semiconductor fuses are also referred to as
high speed fuses. They are reliable, quick
reactors that can reduce the amount of short
circuit current in an electrical system. Their
main work is to protect devices from
overcurrents that if not actively stopped or
regulated may cause damage to electrical
equipment.
Semiconductor fuses have fast inbuilt
reflex abilities and properties that ensure the
fuses act in a timely manner and are fast
enough to stop more damage that is likely to
be caused in cases of delays
N h f u s e s
NH fuses are types of electrical resistors used as
sacrificial devices to protect electrical circuits in
industrial related plants as well as in public mains
electricity related production and distributions.
NH fuses are easily identified by their square or
oblong bodies combined with blade style
terminals.
Due to their larger body size they have higher
ratings comprising of up to 1.25kA in sum
total.
T h e r m a l f u s e s
Thermal fuses are electrical safety devices that
are designed to automatically open electrical
circuits hence switching off electrical appliances if
the range of permissible operating temperature
accepted by the electrical fuse is exceeded
portraying a potential risk to the electrical
equipment.
These are the most common types of electrical
fuses as they are easily found in home electrical
appliances or transformers used to power small
electronic devices.
Cylindrical fuse-links
Cylindrical fuse- links are mainly made up of
ceramic tubes that withstand high internal
pressure and thermal shock that is highly
available in machinery and equipment they are
used in.
Customers looking for the most secure
protection for their electrical installations, control
related operations or signal circuit related
protection should settle on the cylindrical fuse-
links for their efficiency and effectiveness.
Time dealy fuses
Are often referred to as slow blow fuses by
various electrical equipment and devices
manufacturers. These type of fuses were mainly
developed for use in situations that accept
momentary overloads for a particular time hence
would have been costly to set up and exchange
other types of resistors due to the high
vulnerability involved.
Time delay fuses are designed to carry an
overload several times the one accepted
normally for a relative amount of time without
blowing.
Ceramic fuses
Ceramic fuses are types of electrical safety
device resistors that are made of ceramic
bodies hence enabling them to prevent
shattering of the fuses when they are blown out.
Ceramic fuses are opaque in nature hence
make it difficult for inspection.
Ceramic fuses are highly preferred where
high current loads are normally expected or
highly available.
Smd fuses
SMD fuses normally referred to as surface
mount fuses are electrical resistors that can be
used to address various over-current issues
found in electrical applications, equipment or
machinery. SMD fuses mainly provide reliable
and economical protection for for electrical
transformers and capacitor banks found in
outdoor substations.
The precision- engineered non- damageable
silver or nickel elements make surface mount
fuses have a higher lifespan as compared to
other types of electrical fuses available in the
market.
Medium-voltage fuses
Medium- voltage fuses can be effectively
defined as any types of electrical fuses with a
voltage rating that is greater than 1,500V and
less than or equal to 36,000 volts. Medium
voltage fuses are not intended to provide
overload protection but are mainly applied in
situations that are not required to open small
over-currents.
Medium- voltage fuses are known to offer a
wider range of system voltage hence resulting
in a larger number of fuse ratings.
Fuse switches
They are low voltage switching devices that
enable safe manual connecting and
disconnecting of electrical circuits under load.
Fuse- switches can also be referred to as fuse
combination switches depending on the type of
manufacturer.
These types of electrical safety devices can be
either automatic in nature or allow mechanical
handling by human beings.
Fuse holder
As the name fuse holder suggests, these are
devices or equipment used to keep electrical
fuses in their required positions preventing them
from interacting with other electrical devices
found in machinery or equipment.
Most of the fuse holders have insulation
properties hence do not influence electrical
circuits or affect them in any way possible.
