The water samples from different areas of Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka were analyzed. The tap water samples showed electrical conductivity ranging from 214-727 μS/cm, total dissolved solids from 107-361 ppm, pH ranging from 6.5-6.9, and turbidity up to 3.06 NTU in one sample. The filtered water samples had better quality overall with lower EC, TDS, and NaCl levels compared to tap water. While most parameters met drinking water standards, some tap water samples exceeded limits for certain measurements.

Executive Summary
In this report we have analyzed different water samples of major areas of Dhaka city. Then
we have analyzed the Mineral water Samples and some soft drinks of different brands. From the
areas we have gone through almost 300 samples and tried to find out the best possible drinking
water from a particular area. After analyzing the samples within area, we made a throughout
analysis on the areas. Also we have found out that water qualities vary from area to area. For
drinking water we found out that filtered water is the best option. Moreover, we analyzed the
mineral water samples and found out some best possible options and analyzed the soft drinks too.

Introduction
Water is one of the most important substances on earth. We already know another name of
water is life. We human beings, all plants and animals must need water to survive. If there was no
water there would be no life on earth. Apart from drinking it to survive, people have many other
uses for water. It is used in both household and industrial purposes. Water is also essential for the
healthy growth of farm crops and farm stock and is used in the manufacture of many products. But
in our country Bangladesh, water pollution is one of the most significant dangers to general
wellbeing. Especially water turns into curse for the city dwellers in Dhaka. Water pollution is
common throughout our country but in Dhaka, it has presented itself as a very serious problem. A
city which has nearly 20 million inhabitants, Dhaka faces challenges for inadequate sanitation,
polluted rivers, and chemical outpouring from the surrounding industries, faulty sewage
management etc. Most of these are resulting from the unplanned nature of urbanization. Also the
people are not aware of that situation for that reason different health hazards like diarrhea, typhoid,
dysentery, colon, kidney problems and many other health concerns are a direct result of city-wide
water pollution. However, the quality of the mineral water samples of all brands is not standard
and drinkable at all. The scenario for soft drinks is even worse.
To find out the current situation of water quality and to know more about water variation
in different areas, we collected different samples of water from the different areas of Dhaka city
under the ENV107 Lab. Here in this report we will present the water quality of Dhaka city.
5. 5
Methodology
Here in this report, we basically use primary sources. By using the source, we try to
represent the real scenario of water quality of Dhaka city.
Primary Source:
Our water sources include the water samples from different residential areas of Dhaka city,
different brands of drinking water and some soft drinks of Bangladesh.
The places (Sources) we examined are following-
Bashundhara Residential Area
Puran Dhaka
Uttara
Mirpur Area
Different Lakes( Dhanmondi lake, Gulshan lake, Hatirjheel, Uttara lake, Mirpur
DOHS lake)
Mineral waters and soft drinks
In each of our lab classes, we tested these water samples and collected some parameters
from our lab class to measure and know more about the water quality.
6. 6
Lab experiment
We did altogether seven lab classes. In the first class, our course instructor told us about
the importance of water and water pollution. She instructed us to collect sample water like surface
and ground water from different areas and different lakes of Dhaka city. Also she told us to collect
different brands of drinking water and some of the soft drinks. In each of our lab classes, we, along
with our lab instructor and lab assistant, tested the various water samples.
However, some of the water samples that we collected seemed clear; it does not mean that
those are safe or drinkable. It's important to evaluate the protection of water by taking some of the
qualities into consideration. Firstly we can think about Microbiological like if there are any
bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and worms into it or not. Then if there any Chemical elements present
into it like minerals, metals etc. Lastly the Physical components like temperature, color, smell,
taste and turbidity etc. are also important.
We did not do any microbiological research but we examined through chemical and
physical components. For chemical part we did pH, DO( Dissolved Oxygen) and NaCl and for
physical part we did TDS( Total Dissolved Solids), EC( Electrical Conductance) and Turbidity.
Water samples collection
We collected water samples from different areas of Dhaka City. At first, we collected
samples from Bashundhara residential area. The blocks were divided among four groups and each
group explored different blocks. Collectively we collected water samples from different blocks of
this area. We collected both surface and tap and filter water from this area. Then, we collected
water samples from Puran Dhaka and collected filter, tap and pond water. Then we collected
different mineral water samples like: Fresh, Mum, Acme, Pran, Kinley, Jibon etc and some soft
drinks like: Sprite, CocaCola, Clemon, 7up, Fanta etc. After that we collected both filter and tap
water samples from Mirpur area, and then we collected our water samples from different sides of
the lakes of Dhaka city.
7. 7
Procedure of the lab Analysis
As we have collected many water samples, the objective of the test is to assess the quality
of different places of Dhaka city. We followed a table to note down all the information that we got
from the lab class. The table looked like this:
Sample ID
(Location)
EC
(mm/cm)
TDS
(ppm)
NaCl
(%)
pH DO
(mg/l)
Turbidity
(NTU)
Sample 1
Sample 2
The list of parameters
1. EC: An EC meter measures the potential for an electrical current to be transported through
water. Salts and other chemicals that dissolved in water can be break down into positively
and negatively charged ions. Electrons are able to flow through the water from one set of
electrodes to another. Better quality water will be in the range of 50-500 mm/cm.
2. Total Dissolved Solids: TDS are inorganic compounds that are found in water such as
salts, heavy materials and some traces of organic compounds that are dissolved in water.
We will consider the water contaminated if it exceeds 500 ppm. We can consider TDS of
100-400 ppm as drinkable.
3. % of NaCl (Sodium Chloride): Sodium is an essential mineral in our diet. It is generally
found in the form of NaCl. Salt has no smell. If it's 0 then it is better. The ideal range is (0-
0.7) %.
4. pH: pH is a determined value based on a defined scale. pH of water is a figure between 0
and 14 .The lower the number, the more acidic the water is. The higher the number, the
more basic it is. : pH 7, neutral, indicates best quality water. If it's less than 5: Acetic, if
it's more than 8: Alkaline.
8. 8
5. Dissolved Oxygen: Dissolved Oxygen is the amount of O2 dissolved in the water. Water
temperature and the volume of moving water can affect dissolved oxygen levels. Do of this
range (7-11) mg/L makes the water Best drinking water. Good organisms are not supposed
to be alive if the DO is lower than 7 mg/L.
6. Turbidity: Turbidity is the measure of relative clarity of liquid. It is basically an optical
characteristic of water and is an expression of the amount of light that is scattered by
material in the water when a light is shined through the water sample. Turbidity of 0 NTU
is considered to be the clearest of water.

vi. Parameter 6: Turbidity
After measuring, the quality of the Bashundhara R/A waters we can see that, the EC, TDS, % of
NaCl, pH and DO of almost all the water samples were in standard range. However, the samples
from the Block-I had very high levels of EC and % of NaCl that were above the normal standard,
and TDS was also little high. Though some samples had a pH little less than pH 7 but we can still
say that the water in this area is very much close to the neutral pH range. DO of Block-B waters
are below the standard range, it may be a concerning issue for the health of the residents in this
block. The turbidity of all the samples were within the normal standard range, and 0 NTU in almost
all the tap and filter water samples. We can conclude that, both the tap and filter of Bashundhara
R/A, are good for use in household and other purposes. Yet, we would suggest that the residents
must use filter water for drinking, cooking and consumption so that the do not get ill. However, it
is recommended that people should not use the water from the Block-E pond as it has very high
levels of turbidity, 63 NTU.

When we analysed the water samples from Puran Dhaka, we found out that several places near
Bangshal, Chakbazar, Hosseni Dalan, Islampur have very high levels on EC in tap and filter waters
and even in places like Mitford and BIRDEM Hospitals. TDS is the only parameter that was
consistently with the normal range for all the tap and filter water samples of Puran Dhaka. We also
found out that, most places around Puran Dhaka have much higher % of NaCl than normal and
also in several places the water is slightly acidic. Alarmingly, few places like: Bangshal, Hosseni
Dalan, the students’ halls etc have very low levels of DO in the tap/open waters, and the filter
waters of Puran Dhaka have DO very close to 7 mg/L in most places. The turbidity is highest at
the open water bodies, except these most of the samples had low turbidity levels. We recommend
that people in Puran Dhaka must refine or filter their water before drinking it or cooking with it.
In many places several parameters of the tap and open waters were well above or below the normal
range, this can be a very important issue for the health of the residents of Puran Dhaka.

When we tested the water samples of Uttara area we noticed that, the water quality of most of the
sectors of Uttara was good and in normal level for all of the six parameters measurements we that
we used. Exceptions were water samples from Sector-13, 14 and 15, where the EC and % of NaCl
were very much higher than normal. TDS was in normal range but a little high in Sector-13 and
15. All the tap and filter waters of Uttara have DO well within the normal range, the pH of the
waters is is most cases near and/or close to pH 7. We found that all the water across Uttara had
turbidity present in them however, the turbidity level was very low and within the normal standard;
comparatively Sector-15 had a little higher turbidity level to the rest of Uttara area but that too was
in normal range. We can conclude that, both tap and filter waters of Uttara are of good quality and
can be used by the people for day to day purposes. Moreover, we suggest that was filter water of
this area is much better than tap water so the residents should use filter water for drinking and
cooking in order to stay healthy.

When we tested the water samples of Mirpur area we observed that, the EC and TDS level in the
different samples were all within the normal range, and the tap waters had higher levels of EC and
TDS than filter waters. The % of NaCl in all the samples was also in normal range except for the
above normal level of % of NaCl in the water samples from Mirpur-1 and some parts of Mirpur-
2. We found that the water across Mirpur area is neutral as all the samples had pH almost or very
close to pH 7. The DO of all the samples were well within the normal range and a little low in
parts of Mirpur- 1 and 10. The turbidity in the filter water are in acceptable normal range in all the
samples; the turbidity of the tap waters are also in normal range, only exceptions are the waters
fromMirpur-2 60 feet Road and Mirpur-12 Pallabi with 25 NTU and 16 NTU of turbidity
respectively. Based on our analysis and measurements it is highly suggested that, people of Mirpur
area must use filter water for drinking and cooking in order to keep themselves safe from getting
ill. Moreover, as most of the tap water are also good enough under most of the parameters so these
can be used for everyday and household purposes without much worries.

We collected water from the different lakes of Dhaka city to test their quality. The EC of waters
from the Dhanmondi Lake was below 350 mm/cm on average and from the Mirpur DOHS Lake it
was 435 mm/cm, this level are within the normal EC range of 50-500 mm/cm. However, all the
other Uttara, Hatirjheel and Gulshan lakes higher than normal levels of EC. The TDS of all the
lakes’ water was also within the normal range and Dhanmondi Lake’s water had lower level of
TDs compared to the rest. Moreover, except for Dhanmondi Lake all the other lakes have much
higher % of NaCl present in their water than the normal % of NaCl of 0.7. The pH of all the lakes
are around pH so we can say that, all these lake waters are almost in the neutral level. The most
alarming factor is the DO in the water, which is very low compared to normal standard level of 7-
11 mg/L, but Mirpur DOHS and Uttara are the only exceptions with good level of DO in them 7.8
mg/L and 7.6 mg/L. We also tested the water of these lakes for turbidity, and found out that only
some parts of Dhanmondi Lake have turbidity within the normal range and all the other lakes have
much higher levels of turbidity than that is normal. We can conclude that, comparatively
Dhanmondi Lake’s water quality is much better, Mirpur DOHS Lake’s water is also not that much
bad, however Gulshan, Uttara and Hatirjheel lakes water quality is very poor. We think that, it is
very challenging for the aquatic creatures and plants to survive in the poor waters of the lakes of
Dhaka; even though Dhanmondi Lake water quality is better but the DO is its water is much lower
than normal. Besides the government, as citizens of Dhaka city it is our duty and responsibility to
keep our lakes clean and well-maintained. Moreover, actions must be taken to clean the water and
preserve the areas of the lakes of Dhaka city.

We collected eleven samples of mineral water and also took water from NSU tap and filter, and
tested them to find out about their quality. All the water samples had EC within the normal range
except for Evian Mineral Water which had an EC of 498 mm/cm which very high for drinking
water. The TDS abd 5 of Nacl of these waters was also within normal range, but comparatively
Evian had higher TDS than the others and its % of NaCl was 1 that is much higher than normal
range. Kinley and Evian water samples also showed acidic properties as they had pH of 4 and 5.6
respectively, all the other samples were close to neutral pH 7, and NSU tap had pH 6. Kinley also
did not have enough DO as we fund its DO to be 6.4 mg/L, but all the other samples of mineral
water and NSU tap water had DO within the normal range of 7-11 mg/L. All the water samples
had turbidity within the standard limit, mineral waters from Fresh, Aquafina, ACME, and Evian
had 0 NTU of turbidity. To conclude, we can say that NSU filter water has a decent and good water
quality and most of the mineral waters in our country also maintains the good level of standard in
their quality. Moreover, Fresh, ACME and Aquafina are the best mineral water brands available
in market. People and travelers shall try to drink mineral waters from these brands when they are
outside or travelling, though all the other brands are also good. However, it is to the best interest
to our health that we shall try to avoid drinking Evian mineral water.

Lastly, we tested the soft drinks available in our Bangladeshi market to find out their quality.
Except for Sprite and Fanta all the soft drinks had much higher EC than normal. All the soft drinks
had TDS within the normal range, however TDS of Frooto, Frutika Grape and Mojo was a lot
higher than the normal accepted limit. As expected the soft drinks had high % of NaCl present in
them, all of them had 5 of NaCl above 1.00 and only Fanta and Sprite had it at 0.8 which is close
to the normal limit. All the soft drinks had very low level of pH meaning that they are moderately
strong acidic liquids. The DO was also very much lower than normal accepted minimum level,
and only Drinko Lichee had a DO of 6.4 mg/L that was little close to 7 mg/L. Many of the soft
drinks have a lot higher level of turbidity with Frooto having the highest turbidity of 1218 NTU;
though, Sprite, CocaCola, 7UP, Frutika Grape, Mojo, Pran Apple Fizz and Clemon had turbidity
of 0 NTU which is a good sign of quality. As a result, we can say that Sprite is the best soft drink
in our market and whenever in need of drinking a soft drinks everyone should try to consume
Sprite in order to keep their body well as all the other soft drinks are comparatively poor in quality
than Sprite.

Conclusion and remarks
Water is one of the most important resources that nature offered us. The level of fresh
water in our world is limited and it is slowly decreasing due to its uses and polluting it. It is high
time for us to be conscious about this matter and use the water in a fruitful way as if we can lead
a healthy life as well as we can provide a healthy life for our future generation. Water pollution
has become a growing concern due to the lack of awareness and mismanagement of sewage
system. In the news and reports, the presence of E coli in the jar water sold across the city has also
been revealed. As for the research purpose, we have collected lots of samples from different places
around Dhaka. The purpose has been met too. We have got to know about the quality of water of
Dhaka testing in 6 different levels. As expected, the mineral water which we have bought from the
market, is far better in terms of quality than any other samples. It is a good sign for us. As the other
samples from the different places contains wasters from tap, filtered as well as surface water, it’s
hard to determine the best of them all. We have found that Evian is one of the worst brand of
mineral water and the soft drinks are proven to be bad under the several parameters that we have
used. After analyzing the water samples of Dhaka city, we found out that Uttara and Bashundhara
R/A’s water is better than others, and Puran Dhaka’s water is the worst in comparison to the other
areas of Dhaka city. Among the different lakes of Dhaka city, Gulshan and Hatirjheel Lake’s water
is the worst of all and Dhanmondi Lake is better compared to the other lakes. As water is the most
vital element for living, its pollution should be minimized from all the sectors of society.
