Los saludos y lasdespedidas en español Greetings and saying goodbye in Spanish By:  Melissa Kenney EDU 290--Central Michigan University
Objetivo:  By the end of the lesson, you will be able to greet and say good-bye formally and informally while taking into account culturally appropriate gestures.   (State objectives:  1.1, 2.1)
Pensadpor un momento:  How would you greet the following people?
Algunossaludos:  formales o informales(Some greetings:  formal or informal) Hello! Good morning! Good afternoon! Good evening/ good night (said as a good-bye) ¡Hola! ¡Buenos días! ¡Buenastardes! ¡Buenasnoches!
Los saludosinformales: ¿Cómo estás (tú)? ¿Qué tal (estás)? ¿Cómo (te) va? ¿Qué hay? ¿Qué onda? (México)  How are you? How’s it going? What’s going on? Wassup?
Respuestas:(Answers) Bien, gracias, ¿y tú? (¿y tú? = and you? (Estoy) bien, (gracias). Más o menos.  Mal. (Estoy) enfermo/a (Estoy) cansado/a
Actividad:  Working with a partner, greet the other person and ask how they are.  The other person will respond according to the pictures that appear.  Switch roles every other time, so both of you have a chance to ask how the other one is and state how they are feeling.
El contacto:  (contact) What is physical contact like in the US when you greet someone?  Does this vary with age of the person and social status?   In many Latino countries it is common to kiss on the cheek when you meet; especially among women and men and women greeting each other.  How would this make you feel?
Pensadpor un momento:How would you greet this person?  Why might you greet him differently than a younger person?
Los saludosformales:  Formal greetings ¿Cómoestá (usted)?   ¿ Cómole va? Respuestas:  (answers) (Muy) bien, (gracias),¿y usted? How are you (sir/ ma’am)?   How is it going for you (sir/ ma’am)?  Very well, thanks, and you (sir/ ma’am)?   “y usted? can be used intead of repeating “¿Cómoestá?
Las despedidas:   Adiós ¡Hasta luego! ¡Nosvemos! ¡Chau! ¡Hasta la vista! ¡Hasta pronto! Goodbye! See you later! We’ll see you! Bye! Until I see you. See you soon!
Canción de saludo:   Sung to the tune of Are You Sleeping Buenos días, buenosdías ¿Cómoestٴás? ¿Cómoestٴás?  Muybien, gracias, Muybien, gracias ¿y usted? ¿y usted? (replace “Buenos días” with “buenasnoches/tardes”)
Canción de despedida: Sung to the tune of Are You Sleeping Adiós amigos, adiós amigos Nosvemos, nosvemos Hasta la vista, hasta la vista Chau, chau, chau, chau, chau, chau
Actividad final:   In groups of three, you are to pretend that you are going to a party of your friend Juan/ Juana’s.  Greet Juan/Juana and greet his/her granparent appropriately. Include the following items: -informal greeting/answer -formal greeting/answer. Use Señor/a_______  -Say good-bye appropriately to the grandparent to excuse yourselves(both you and Juan/a).  Also add, “con permiso” to say excuse me.   -Be creative and be prepared to share your presentation with the class.

Include the following items: -informal greeting/answer -formal greeting/answer. Use Señor/a_______ -Say good-bye appropriately to the grandparent to excuse yourselves(both you and Juan/a). Also add, “con permiso” to say excuse me. -Be creative and be prepared to share your presentation with the class.
