Mayo Clinic was born out of a devastating tornado that destroyed much of Rochester in 1883. Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his two sons helped care for those injured, along with the Sisters of Saint Francis and Mother Alfred Moes. After the crisis passed, Mother Alfred was convinced the growing city needed a hospital. She approached Dr. W.W. Mayo, who agreed to establish one. Saint Marys Hospital opened in 1889.

To prove the transformative personal utility of this tool, I wanted to share a quick story. Going back to our wedding about an entire 11 days ago, after the ceremony, my husband and I entered the Church again to dismiss people aisle by aisle. My boss Lee Aase was in attendance. When we dismissed his aisle, and John and I had a brief conversation with Lee, he explained with the excitement that is typical of his ventures, “Guess what? I Facebook live-streamed during part of your wedding ceremony, and even our medical director has already commented!” After Lee walked out the Church, and before we went to dismiss the next aisle, my husband whispered to me, “Wait...was Lee serious that he live-streamed our wedding?” My answer was: “Yes, I think so.”

The morale of this story isn’t that more people have finger nail concerns than you would think, but rather, that looking at engagements isn’t enough. Don’t forget about the clicks.
I think successful and effective innovation mandates solid data to drive decision-making.
