2. What is Patient Counselling?
The primary right of patients being well know about medication agents,
which can be used in duration of self treatment.
Lack of information may result in the patient not taking the medication,
which in turn may results in therapeutic failure & burden of increase
therapeutic cost or even hospitalization to the patient.
“Patient counseling refers to the process of providing information, advice
and assistance to help patients use their medications appropriately. The
information and advice is given by the pharmacist”.

In this matter the ‘Medication cards’ can
be useful aid particularly for patients on
many medications on a long term basis.
Another is ‘Patient information leaflets
{PILs}’- produced by drug manufacture for
their products are known as “Consumer
medicine information” {CMI} or “Consumer
product information” {CPI}.

10. Role of Pharmacist & Patient In Patient

The pharmacist give to information about medications
directly to patient’s or to the patient representative.
Ideally, the pharmacist counsels patients on all new and
refill prescriptions.
The information about the patients illness or recommended
lifestyle changes.
During counselling, the pharmacist should assess the
patient’s understanding about his or her illness & the
treatment & provide individualized advice & information
which will assist the patient to take their medications in the
most safe & effective manner.

Knowledge and skills to provide
effective and accurate patient

Should be aware of patients ethnicity
and health conditions.
Should have active communication
skills, listening skills as well.
