As 50% of the 7.6 bn people live in urban areas today likely increase to 70% by 2050, the cities are becoming an ultra complex habitat to be sustainable. Sustainability a wholistic term that refers not just to ecological angle here, but also to economical sustainability, which in turn points to education, health and wellbeing of the residents as well. The presentation explores the dimensions for design ideas for sustainable urban development. The keynote speech was delivered for Dell Designathon event at Mumbai in Aug 2018

6. THE LOSS!
• 500,000 cases of respiratory tract infections
• Acid haze in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and Thailand.
• Assets worth $47 billion lost
• 3000 Orangutans caught in the fire & died
• 9000 Sq Km of Indonesian forest was cut down for palm oil plantations (equal to
Lebanon or Cyprus)
The palm oil trade is worth about $50 billion. Products as varied as chocolate bars,
margarine, ice cream, frozen pizza, lipstick and shampoo, all contain palm oil
(almost 50% of all edible packed food)
8. 1.6 billion cell phones sold in 2017.
(World population is around 7.6 billion)
Each cell phone is packed with 42 different
materials including yttrium, lanthanum,
terbium, neodymium, gadolinium and
praseodymium. Many of these are rare/toxic.
One tonne of iPhones would deliver 300 times more gold
than a tonne of gold ore and 6.5 times more silver than
a tonne of silver ore.
THE LOSS!
One desktop uses up to 12 times its
weight in fossil fuels.
One laptop emits over 250 kgs of carbon
dioxide during manufacturing.

2. Human and natural systems are
tightly intertwined and come
together in cities
3. Urban inequality undermines
sustainability efforts
4. Cities are highly interconnected
14. ENVIRONMENTAL
• GREENHOUSE GASES: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

• RECYCLING: Recycling or disposing of waste with minimal damage to the environment
• CARBON FOOTPRINT: Reducing the ecological footprint of towns and cities
15. ECONOMIC DIMENSIONS
• RELIABLE INFRASTRUCTURE for water, waste management, transport
and communications and energy etc.
• AFFORDABLE ACCESS to land or premises in appropriate locations

• Relevant and effective regulations for the sustained management
19. Are cities always less sustainable than rural
areas?
Cities produce nearly 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In developing countries,
cities bear up to 80 percent of the costs associated with climate change.
Nanjin- 6,000-square-meter area, with more than 1100 trees and 2500 plants, is expected to absorb 25 tons of
carbon dioxide each year while producing 130 pounds (60 kilograms) of oxygen each day.

24. Vertical Farming
With nearly 24 million inhabitants to feed and
a decline in the availability and quality of
agricultural land, the Chinese megacity
of Shanghai is developing the Sunqiao Urban

Chinese Super Bacteria
TAL Apparel Ltd., which has factories in
mainland China, has identified bacteria that can
clean up more efficiently the vast quantities of
waste water the textile industry produces.
Using bacteria instead of chemicals to digest
organic compounds can cut the amount of
waste sludge generated by as much as 80% and
enables 100% of the water to be recycled in the
plant.
Grown Mars Boot
The Grown Mars Boot is made from mycelium,
a mushroom-like fungus, that grows as
someone wears it. As a person wears this boot,
sweat from their feet and collected bacteria
allows the mycelium to grow–so the shoe
never degrades and never becomes waste.
