Improvement Toyota KATA 1-Day Workshop
Quality Test Lab Simulation
Hands-on Improvement KATA workshop for Leaders & Practitioners. Learn two fundamental behavior
patterns at the core of Toyota KATA:
The Improvement KATA and the Coaching KATA driven by
the 5-Question Coaching Dialogue and Rapid PDA cycles.
Improvement KATA Workshop
Improvement KATA workshop – Quality Test Lab Simulation is a fun and instructive way of introducing
participants to a simple, yet well-structured methodology of continuous improvement, solving problems,
improving process and achieving results.
Improvement Kata is an innovative management system that provides the means to achieve two equally
important objectives:
Rapid PDCA Cycles - a methodology to achieve challenging objectives that are currently beyond a
team's ability to reach, and…
The 5-Question Coaching Dialog is about developing managers and leaders as coaches for creating a
culture of continuous improvement, adaption, and innovation. This is done through simple, easy-to-
teach, time-efficient, daily routines.
Improvement KATA workshop is based on Mike Rother's book “Toyota Kata - Managing people for
improvement, adaptiveness and superior results”.

This 1-Day workshop provides a unique mix of theory and hands-on practical activities to teach participants
four steps of Improvement KATA:
1. Understand the Direction
2. Grasp a current Situation
3. Establish next Target Condition
4. PDCA towards the Target Condition
The four steps of the Improvement Kata are a model of scientific thinking and acting that is similar to other
models of the human creative process. What is different is that each step includes structured practice
routines, which make the pattern actionable and teachable.
The Improvement Kata process methodology will encourage teams to generate improvement ideas, build
rapport, and incorporate prototyping and experimentation to solve problems and challenges. Each round of
Quality Test Lab Simulation will reveal a true nature of collaboration. It will illustrate how each member of
the Team innovates and emphasizes the importance of diverse perspective.
The Improvement Kata is for the Learner and the Coaching Kata is for the Coach. To make the scientific
Improvement Kata pattern a habit in an organization, managers coach their people in the Improvement Kata
routines a little bit every day. The Coaching Kata is a protocol for how to do that. The practice routines of
the Improvement Kata and the Coaching Kata are a regimen for developing practical scientific skill and
mindset that any manager can use.

necessary to achieve the next Target Condition. How do we need to operate? What pattern of operation
do we want? What obstacles (problems) do we need to overcome in order to achieve our next Target
Conditions? How does the process need to behave to achieve the desired results?

Marek is a Management Consultant specializing in improving overall operational
efficiencies through the effective implementation of Toyota Production System (TPS) /
Lean Transformation.

Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) as an Education and Training manager.
He was a member of the Start-Up Management Team responsible for starting the operation, recruiting new

Since then he has worked with numerous operations in North, Central and South America, Asia and Europe

methodologies, techniques and processes, that when implemented correctly and in the right sequence, will
generate measurable results, help companies reduce costs and improve overall operational efficiency and
On-Time Deliveries.
TPS / Lean is a Management System. Any company venturing into a Lean Journey must consider not only
changes to their equipment, manufacturing and Supply Chain management practices, but also a review their
management practices and most likely modify their organizational structure. As a part of his experience in
implementing Lean Marek also emphasizes the organizational development and training process to achieve
the business objectives and benefits that are requisite of the above improvement processes.
Marek graduated from Systems Design Engineering from University of Waterloo, Ontario in 1977. Prior to
joining Toyota he worked in the electronic industry. He is a Faculty Associate of Jim Womack’s Lean
