The document discusses alternatives to Scrum for agile methodologies, including Kanban and Scrumban. It describes some issues with implementing Scrum in certain contexts and then outlines the key components of Kanban, including visualized workflows with work-in-progress limits, explicit policies, work item types, independent cadences, and continuous improvement. It proposes a simplified 4-part kickstart approach combining Kanban principles with Scrum practices like daily standups and retrospectives to provide an alternative agile framework.

Editor's Notes
how many people in the room are using or have used Scrum?
keep your hands up. now raise your hand if you’d say you’re reasonably familiar with Scrum.
this is pretty common, because Scrum is still very dominant in its native environment. And don’t get me wrong -- I have nothing against Scrum. In the right context it’s very effective.
But marketers are treating Scrum like Gus from My Big Fat Greek Wedding treats Windex.
He believes that everything from poison ivy to internal bleeding can be cured by this magical substance. And we’re starting to act the same way.
Can’t get your content out on time? Put some scrum on it.
Not hitting your MQL numbers? Put some scrum on it.
Marketing director stubbed her toe? Put some scrum on it.
Scrum can work really well, but it doesn’t cure everything.
In fact, even in its natural habitat of software and product development Scrum has issues.

No doubt all of this combines to deliver these results from a 2016 study -- after just a few months many agile marketing teams transition away from Scrum.
And so today I want to introduce you to two alternatives. to give you enough information to make an informed choice, either to start off on the right foot or to transition away from a Scrum implementation that isn’t working for you.
First up is kanban
6 core practices of kanban and how they can reveal hidden problems in content flow
visualized workflow
if you don’t know how to design your board, think of gates or gatekeepers like approvals, reviews, handoffs from one person to another, or releases to the audience and use those to create columns.

WIP limits
WIP limits
good WIP limits
why WIP limits matter
we know how to deal with work that comes in independently
less negotiation
you can’t improve something if it hasn’t been defined
most important is the definition of done and WIP limits
others will depend on your context
example of an explicit policy
like buckets - help us avoid estimation,
work item types
most important is the definition of done and WIP limits
others will depend on your context
continuous improvement - you can start w/kanban very quickly b/c it’s designed to fit on top of your existing process, but that doesn’t mean you’re done with it quickly.

Scrumban is like getting a free pass to the all you can eat Agile buffet
things to keep no matter what
