What is Value?
 A measurement of the worth of a
product, or service, by a customer based
on it’s usefulness and satisfying a
customer need
 Adding Value - an activity, process or
operation that changes the product from
one form to another in order to get closer
to the Customer specification
 It is something that the Customer is
willing to buy and pay for

 Focus on value-add activities
 For each step we need to be sure that it is adding value from the customer’s
perspective
 Many steps in a production or a service process add no value and most time in a
process is spent with nothing happening at all:
 People are waiting for work
 Finished Goods are sitting in a warehouse for a long time
 Waiting for raw materials or purchased parts
 Waiting for information / instructions
 Waiting for machine time
 Getting everyone to understand and focus on value is key to good process design.

Introduction
What is TPS?
 TPS is a systematic methodology for implementing rapid process changes and
improvements by elimination of waste
 Best accomplished with flexibility in mind, continuous improvement thinking,
team-oriented and cross-trained people.
 Improvement is always possible and necessary. Continuously improve every
aspect of the system through Kaizen. Any existing process can be improved - no
ifs, buts or maybes
TPS is "lean“
because it uses less of
everything compared with a
traditional "mass" production
system
