Editor's Notes
Elias narrates his story and the unfortunate lives of his ancestors, upon Ibarra's request. Sixty years had passed. Elias's great-grandfather worked as a bookkeeper for a Spanish businessman. When a fire broke out in the workhouse, he was accused of arson and was sentenced to be flogged in the streets. This left him crippled.
Elias and his sister lost all that they had. The girl killed herself, and Elias was left alone to wander the streets as a hunted man.
Captain Tiago and Father Damaso want her to marry Linares but she neither say yes or no. Ibarra wish to talk to her and Sinang told him to go to her house the following morning.
Pedro (Sisa's husband), Tarsilo and Bruno.
Pedro Tarsilo and Bruno were in the cemetery, To talk about the revolution ibarra wants to happen
Several minutes later the church- clock struck eight and the bells announced the hour of the souls, but Lucas invited no one to play nor did he call on the dead, as the superstition directs; instead, he muttered a few prayers, crossing and recrossing himself with the same fervor with which, at the same moment, the leader of the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary was going through a similar performance.
The original title of this chapter is written in Latin "Il Buon Dí Si Conosce Da Mattina," meaning that if the morning is beautiful, the rest of the day will be also. The circumstances of the present will reflect what becomes of the future.
