Who are we?
Five things you should know about
The Third Teacher+
1

    We were born out of
     a wicked question.
            inquiry to practice.
How can design transform
     teaching & learning?
How can the design process
transform teaching & learning?
NOUN. verb.
“We’re going to have a BABY.”
“We’re going to have a BABY.”

“We’re going to have burping,
  messing, cooing, crawling
discovering, spilling, learning,
  growing, crying, loving...”
NOUN. verb.
   SPACES, CLASSROOMS, WORKING, LEARNING, LIVING,
CITIES, HOSPITALS, OFFICES... GROWING, HEALING...
Shared inquiry.
Co-created artifact.
    Living practice.

  A journey from question
           to consultancy.

    We are concerned with the
          ecology of learning.
                 holistic thinking, baby.
Setting the table for
connection & conversation
  on the future of learning.

We are a laboratory for a
                 global firm.
           go-go gadget, intraprenuership!
5

We believe in the power of
    design and the empowering
             process of design.
                       yes. we. can.
1. A CULTURE OF CRITICAL COLLABORATION

2. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROBLEM SOLVING, EVERY DAY

3. TINKERING WITH SOLUTIONS AND RECLAIMING FAILURE

                        We love what we do.
                             ...and who we work with.
Create a new language of play
to inform the design of an
outdoor learning environment.
Design a city college that
empowers real world experience
for the health professions.
Hack a classroom into a story
studio to prototype a new
classroom strategy for the school.
Embody and empower Montessori
pedagogy in Chiaravalle’s
community spaces.

Pitch
Education.
More people are starting college.
But of the 70% who
start post secondary,
less than half finish in 6
years.
Tuition rates have
grown at three times the
                           whoa.
rate of inflation.
By 2018, two-thirds of all jobs
will require some post secondary
education.

Labor economists
estimate that the
United States will fall
3 million degrees
short.
Thirty-three states
     have two-year
completion rates at
      or below 25%.

In 13 states, less than 15%
   of students who start at
         two-year colleges
 graduated within 150% of
    normal time to degree.
How might we design a
 better bridge between
      high school and a
student’s next steps to
     college or career?
...help families navigate post-
secondary choices and processes?

          ...help students preview
         careers more effectively?

           ...help teachers pursue
        professional development
                    opportunities?
“School is good at prepping for the student,
but not the whole person”

  • 84. Liam Tinkerer  who’s  failing  school Liam  is  a  Junior  in  Noble  Street  Charter  high  school.    He’s  the   middle  child  of  three  with  a  full-‐=me  working  mom.  His   parents  divorced  when  he  was  a  kid,  so  it’s  mostly  just  him,   his  mom  and  two  brothers. Liam  spends  a  lot  of  =me  to  himself.  He  oDen  gets  caught  up   in  his  own  world  and  is  always  fascinated  by  things  around   him.  His  mom  has  yelled  at  him  numerous  =mes  for  taking   apart  their  kitchen  appliances.    What  his  mom  doesn’t   realize  is  that  Liam  is  able  to  put  these  parts  back  and  his   interests  have  even  extended  into  computers.  Liam’s  friends   will  even  bring  him  broken  computers  to  fix  and  re-‐sell. What might be the experience of Liam working passionately on his “side projects” but also failing school?
  • 85. Nancy Experienced  teacher  seeking  support Nancy  has  been  a  teacher  for  the  last  20  years.  She  loves  what  she   does,  but  knows  she  can  challenge  herself  more.  The  pressure  of   tes=ng  has  zapped  her  crea=vity  and  she  is  nervous  about  integra=ng   new  technology  into  her  curriculum.  The  stakes  are  geLng  higher  for   her  students,  and  she  is  overwhelmed  by  what  it  might  take  to  teach   skills  for  the  new  workplace. She  currently  works  in  a  Chicago  Public  School  where  there  are  no   funds  for  her  to  aNend  conferences,  workshops,  or  pursue   coursework  outside  of  school  hours  to  improve  her  skills  or  expand   her  knowledge.  This  makes  her  lose  steam  in  her  work-‐-‐  feeling   undervalued  and  under  s=mulated.   What might be the experience of feeling like professional development for new teaching is overwhelming and inaccessible–– but more needed than ever?
  • 86. Monica Nursing  student  balancing  family Monica  is  in  her  first  year  of  Malcolm  X’s  City  College  of  Chicago   nursing  program.  As  a  first  genera=on  college  student,  Monica  is   incredibly  proud  to  be  geLng  her  degree  and  geLng  one  step  closer   to  achieving  the  life  her  parents  moved  to  the  US  for. Monica  loves  nursing  and  having  her  own  apartment  and  is  doing   great  in  class.  Unfortunately  however,  Monica’s  mom  was  just   diagnosed  with  cancer.  Her  father  is    a  full-‐=me  security  guard  and   works  incredibly  hard  to  support  the  family. Her  already  stretched  lifestyle  of  classes,  independence,  and  work  is   being  pushed  to  the  limits  with  this  new  strain  on  her  family.  She   feels  alone.   What might be the experience of Monica facing the choice to support her family now versus pursuing an education she know will benefit them all in the long run?
