2. Empowerment comes from the verb “empower” as defined in the dictionary as to give or
delegate power or authority to and as to endow, due, gift, give qualities or abilities to. Going
back to the topic of empowerment, it was my first time to hear it as an intricate relation of it in
the nursing profession, as I try to recall my lectures from Bioethics, Theoretical Foundations in
Nursing. The term empowerment was sadly in the least priority. That is why hearing the word
Empowerment is a fresh idea for me.
When I think of the word Empowerment, to me it implies power even at the first
impression of the word itself. Sometimes, such complex ideas like this could one of the
hindrances encountered by nurses in their practice. Ergo, Studies such as these are truly valuable
to provide awareness and analysis in attempt to know more concerning the empowering
relations. Most Especially, when there are undeniably presences of factors affecting the
facilitation of empowerment such as the “socially constructed hierarchies between the health care
professional and their clients”. Furthermore, that the “Health care professionals are instituted
with more power than their clients which appears of a top-down flow of information continues in
due persistence” That we must have to be reminded of and the awareness of breaking this havoc
flow of information.
I was quite amused from the journal in an attempt to describe the realms of
empowerment. Although the article takes time to finish, but I do appreciated the context. Aside
from the new insights that I have learned, I would like to share that it’s my first time to
encounter the word “feminist structuralist perspective” thus has included knowledge in my
research terminologies. From the article moreover, I was given idea of how empowerment exists
in some manners.
3. I have observed how truly complex empowering relations is. As from what I have read “It
can occur within moments of contradiction, conflict, affirmation and agreement”. That has given
me the presumption that empowerment has its nature of being spontaneous. I have learned that it
can exist despite of the positivity and negativity of the situation as long as you were able to use
yourself as social mediator and using the connotation of nurses as “Expert”, “Skilled” should be
used positively. It requires humbleness and the willingness to shift of the nurse as the
professional, in allowing clients as the prime mover in his/her health care and the refusal to take
advantage of the nurse to his/her authority. In order to do this, one must have the sincere heart to
determine one’s need holistically, not minding to patiently listen and provide support that will
eventually lead to a good therapeutic relation in the latter.
Now I began to take pride of the nurses who have remained true to their work. For in able
to do these things mean giving out a part of themselves. Like in this tainted world that we are
living today, it is really hard to find persons who would give love without prejudice. To be of
Good service to others just like how the Son of God came for the peoples who are lost and the
broken. He is the exemplary epitome of being of service to others.
These are the things that cannot be learned from the four walls of the classroom, that
these intangible ideas which should always be reminded on us. As a student nurse like me who
will soon graduate and be a nurse hopefully under the grace of God, I aspire to be like them. I
pray to God that may my intentions will always remain clear, and to use me for his good
purpose.
