The Legacy of
Ibrahim(as)
Journey to Mecca
 Ibrahim(as) started the journey with his family and son Ismail
 The desert of the Arabian Peninsula and came to an uncultivated valley having
no fruit, no trees, no food, no water. The valley had no sign of life.
 Ibrahim droped his family on that land
 She asked him: "Did Allah command you to do so?" He replied: "Yes." Then his
great wife said: "We are not going to be lost, since Allah, Who has
commanded you, is with us."
 Ibraham invoked Almighty Allah thus: "0 our Lord! I have made some of my
offspring to dwell in a valley with no cultivation, by Your Sacred House (the Kaba
at Mecca); in order, 0 our Lord, that they may offer prayers perfectly (Iqamat-as-
Salat), so fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (0 Allah)
provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks. 0 our Lord! Certainly, You
know what we conceal and what we reveal. Nothing on the earth or in the heaven
is hidden from Allah." Surah 14: 37-38
The Prophet Muhammad said: 'This is the source of the tradition of the Sa'y
(One of the rituals of the hajj, or pilgrimage) the going of people between
them (i.e. As-Safa and Al-Marwa). When she reached Al- Marwa (for the last
time) she heard a voice and she asked herself to be quiet and listened
attentively. She heard the voice again and said: '0, (whoever you may be)!
You have made me hear your voice; have you got something to help me?'
And behold! She saw an angel at the place of Zam-zam, digging the earth
with his heel (or his wing) till water flowed from that place. She started to
make something like a basin around it, using her hand in this way, and
started filling her water-skin with water with her hands, and the water was
flowing out after she had scooped some of it."
The Prophet added: "May Allah bestow mercy on Ishmael's mother! Had she
let the Zam-zam (flow without trying to control it or had she not scooped
from that water to fill her water-skin), Zam-zam would have been a stream
flowing on the surface of the earth."
Hajar Sees Zamzam
The Prophet(saw) continued: 'Then she drank (water) and suckled her child. The angel
said to her: 'Don't be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of Allah which will
be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects His people.' The House (i.e.
Kaba) at that time was on a high place resembling a hillock, and when torrents came,
they flowed to its right and left.
"She lived in that way till some people from the tribe of Jurhum or a family from
Jurhum passed by her and her child, as they (i.e. the Jurhum people) were coming
through the way of Kada'. They landed in the lower part of Mecca where they saw a
bird that had the habit of flying around water and not leaving it. They said: 'This bird
must be flying around water, though we know that there is no water in this valley.' They
sent one or two messengers who discovered the source of water and returned to inform
them of the water. So, they all came (towards the water). Ishmael's mother was sitting
near the water. They asked her: 'Do you allow us to stay with you?' She replied: 'Yes, but
you will have no right to possess the water.' They agreed to that. Ishmael's mother was
pleased with the whole situation, as she used to love to enjoy the company of the
people. So, they settled there, and later on they sent for their families, who came and
settled with them so that some families became permanent residents there. The child
(i.e. Ishmael) grew up and learned Arabic from them and (his virtues) caused them to
love and admire him as he grew up, and when he reached the age of puberty they made
him marry a woman from amongst them.
Mecca Settled
 Ismail grows up and with him grows Ibrahim’s attachment to his son, and bearing in
mind the sound state of Ibrahim’s heart, this was an issue, for there mustn’t be
anything in the heart of this colossal man that competes with his attachment to
Allah. Thus, the painful command came to Ibrahim; to sacrifice his son. He sees this
dream over and over and thus realizes that this must be carried out and so he
submits. He tells his son:
• “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I sacrifice you, so see what you think.”
 Ismail’s response was one of Abrahamic submission. He said
• “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.
 This is when Ibrahim does the unthinkable. He walks with his son to the place where
the sacrifice will be carried out. Shaytan makes his presence known at this point and
tries to talk Ibrahim out of this, but Ibrahim pelts him with 7 stones. He appears a
second and third time and, on each occasion, Ibrahim launches stones at him.
 At this point, it’s as if the motion of the universe had momentarily paused in
anticipation of what is about to happen next. His son had knelt down and the knife
was been placed on this throat, as Ibrahim forcefully suppresses the fatherly
obsession with one’s son. Allah said,
• “And when they had both submitted and he put him down prostrating on his forehead”
 This is when Ibrahim was told to stop,
• “We called to him, “O Ibrahim, You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of
good.”
The Sacrifice
Allah commands Ibrahim to build the first Masjid on earth and Ibrahim submits.
Allah said, “Indeed, the first House of worship established for mankind was
that at Makkah – full of blessing and a guidance for the worlds.” [3:96]
Ibrahim said, ‘O Ismail! Allah has given me an order.’ Ismail said, ‘Do what your
Lord has ordered you to do.’ Ibrahim asked, ‘Will you help me?’ Ismail said, ‘I will
help you.’ Ibrahim said, ‘Allah has ordered me to build a house here,’ pointing to a
hillock higher than the land surrounding it.’ The Prophet added, “Then they raised
the foundations of the House (i.e. the Ka‘bah). Ismail brought the stones and
Ibrahim was building; and when the walls became high, Ismail brought this stone
and put it for Ibrahim who stood over it and carried on building, while Ismail was
handing him the stones, and both of them were saying: O our Lord! Accept (this
service) from us. Verily, You are the All-Hearer the All-Knower.’” (V.2:127). [Sahih
Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.583].
The Construction of Ibrahim
Ismail collected stones for his father who then placed them one above the
other. His style of building did not require cement to keep solid. As the House
grew higher, Ibrahim was no longer able to reach the higher level. This is when
something miraculous happened.
Jibreel (alayhissalam) came down with a stone from Jannah for Ibrahim to
stand on. This special stone lifted and gave him higher reach. While he stood
above ground, Ismail continued to hand him stones for construction.
This special stone of Jannah also became soft and made a deep imprint of the
feet of Ibrahim. This is what we now know as Maqam Ibrahim.
Allah (swt) commanded Ibrahim and Ismail to leave a vacant space in one of the
corners of the Kabah. Jibreel again came down with a stone from Jannah to be
placed as the cornerstone of the House of Allah. This is what we now know as
Al-Hijr Al- Aswad (The Black Stone).
The Two Stones from Jannah
“Show us our Manasik[2:128]”, Jibril then came down, took him to the House
and said, `Raise its foundations.' Ibrahim raised the House's foundations and
completed the building. Jibril held Ibrahim's hand, led him to As-Safa and
said, `This is among the rituals of Allah.' He then took him to Al-Marwah and
said, `And this is among the rituals of Allah.' He then took him to Mina until
when they reached the `Aqabah, they found Iblis standing next to a tree. Jibril
said, `Say Takbir (Allah is the Great) and throw (pebbles) at him.' Ibrahim said
the Takbir and threw (pebbles at) Iblis. Iblis moved to the middle Jamrah, and
when Jibril and Ibrahim passed by him, Jibril said to Ibrahim, `Say Takbir and
throw at him.' Ibrahim threw at him and said Takbir. The devious Iblis sought
to add some evil acts to the rituals of Hajj, but he was unable to succeed.
Jibril took Ibrahim's hand and led him to Al-Mash`ar Al-Haram and `Arafat and
said to him, `Have you `Arafta (known, learned) what I showed you' thrice.
Ibrahim said, `Yes I did.'''

How Prophet(saw) Perform Hajj
Hajj::
Importance
Allah commands Ibrahim to invite the world to it. “And proclaim to the people
the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel;
they will come from every distant pass. That they may witness benefits for
themselves.” [22:27]
Ibn ‘Abbaas(ra) said, “When Allaah commanded Prophet Ibraaheem to
proclaim Hajj among people, he said: ‘My Lord, how can I convey the message
to the people as my voice cannot reach them?’ Allaah said, ‘You call; it is Our
duty to make it reach (everyone)!’ So, he stood in his position and said, ‘O you
people! Your Lord has chosen a House, so perform pilgrimage to it.’ It was said
that the mountains became leveled and his voice reached all parts of the earth
and all that are in the wombs and loins of men were made to hear the call and
everything that heard it, responded. So those for whom Allaah has decreed to
perform Hajj till the Day of Judgment responded with the saying, ‘Labbayka
Allaahumma Labbayk (Here I am at your service, O Allaah, here I am).’
Hajj to Mankind
 Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah
– blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
 In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters
it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House –
for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed,
Allah is free from need of the worlds. Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:96-97
 Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said: “Islam is built upon five (pillars): testifying that there is no god but Allah
and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing regular prayer, paying
Zakaah, Hajj and fasting Ramadan.” (Bukhaari, 8; Muslim, 16)
 Messenger of Allaah(SAW) gave a sermon and said: “O people, Allaah has enjoined
Hajj upon you, so do Hajj.” (Muslim)
 Ibn Abbas (R.A) said that The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Whoever wants to go for
Hajj, let him hasten to do it, because he may fall ill or some other problems may
arise.” (Abu Dawood, 1732)
Hajj – One of the Islamic Pillars
 Hajj is one of the Best deeds : Abu Hurayrah (R.A) reported that the Prophet
(P.B.U.H) was asked which deed is best. He said, “Belief in Allah and His
Messenger.” He was asked, then what? He said, “Jihaad for the sake of Allah.” He
was asked, then what? He said, “An accepted Hajj.” (Bukhaari, 26; Muslim, 83)
 Hajj wipes away the sins: Abu Huraira (R.A) said: I heard the Prophet (P.B.U.H) say:
“Whoever does Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations (with
his wife), commit sin, or dispute unjustly during the Hajj, will come back like the
day his mother gave birth to him. (Bukhari, 1449; Muslim, 1350)
Hajj – One of the Islamic Pillars
 An accepted Pilgrimage (Hajj) has reward of Paradise : Abu Hurayrah (R.A)
reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Umrah is expiation for the time between
it and the previous Umrah; and an accepted hajj has no less a reward than
Paradise.” (Bukhari, 1683; Muslim, 1349)
 The Pilgrim is a Guest of Allah (swt): Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H)
said: “The one who fights for the sake of Allah and the pilgrim who goes for Hajj or
Umrah are all guests of Allah. He called them and they responded; they ask of Him
and He will give them.” (Ibn Maajah, 2893)
 Hajj eliminates Sins and poverty: Abdullah ibn Masood (R.A) said that the
Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Keep on doing Hajj and Umrah, for they eliminate poverty
and sin just as the bellows eliminate impurities from iron and gold and silver.” (al-
Tirmidhi, 810; al-Nasaa’i, 2631)
Hajj – One of the Islamic Pillars
Umrah
Step by Step
Definition of Umrah
 Linguistically: to visit
 Juridically: Umrah is a way of worshipping Allah by making Tawaf of the Ka’bah
and Sayi between Mount Safa and Marwa and shaving or cutting Hair.
 Islamic Ruling on Hajj
 And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to
undertake the journey [3:97]
 It Is Obligatory at least once in a lifetime as found in this Hadeeth Ibn 'Umar (May Allah
be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah ( ‫ﷺ‬) said, "Islam is based on five
(pillars), testifying the fact that La ilaha illallah wa anna Muhammad-ar-Rasul-ullah
[there is no true god except Allah, and Muhammad (( ‫ﷺ‬)) is the Messenger of Allah],
establishing As- Salat, paying Zakat, the pilgrimage to the House, and the Saum (fasting)
during the month of Ramadan." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Virtues of Umrah
 The act of Umrah is known to cleanse one’s soul from past committed
sins. It is advised to do Umrah more than once in your lifetime so that it
can act as a washing of the sins from the last time one performed
Umrah. Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that the Prophet(S.A.W.) said, ‘An
Umrah to another Umrah will be redemption of sins for whatever
(minor) occurs between them.’ (Bukhari, Muslim)
 Performing Umrah also protects one from poverty since they are there
solely for the sake of Allah (SWT) spending their wealth and time in
completing the deed. Ibn Mas’ood (R) said that the Prophet (S.A.W.)
said, ‘Follow up the Hajj and Umrah, because they certainly remove
poverty and sins as fire separates the impurities from iron, gold and
silver.’ (Tirmidhi). Also Umar bin Khattab (R) said that Prophet (S.A.W.)
said, ‘Follow up between the Hajj and Umrah, because certainly
succession between the two of them increases the life span and dispels
poverty and sins as fire removes impurities.’ (Baihaqi)
Virtues of Umrah
 Like Hajj, the act of Umrah is amongst the best deeds one can perform
when pleasing Allah (swt). Allah (SWT) loves those who strive in his path
in hopes of pleasing Him alone and Umrah is an act in which Allah (SWT)
considers the pilgrim to be answering His call. Ibn Umar (R) narrates that
Prophet (S.A.W.) said, ‘The warrior in the cause of Allah, the pilgrim
and the one who is performing Umrah are all the delegation of Allah.
He called them and they responded and they will ask of His bestowals
and He will give it to them.’ (Ibn Majah)
 In the blessed month of Ramadan, the reward of performing Umrah is
equal to that of performing Hajj with the Prophet (S.A.W.)
Conditions for Umrah
1. Islam
2. Puberty
3. Sanity
4. Freedom
5. Capability (Physically & Financially)
6. Mahram companion for Women.
Pillars of Umrah:
1. Ihraam (Intention to enter the state of Umrah).
2. Tawaaff.
3. Sa’iy.
 Note: If one leaves a Pillar he/she must return & make the missed pillar, if not, then
his/her Umrah is invalidated.
Obligations of Umrah:
1. Ihraam at the Miqaat.
2. Shaving or Cutting the Hair.
 Note: If one leaves an obligation a Fidiyah (Compensation) is needed by sacrificing
in Makkah, A sheep, or 1/7 of a Cow or 1/7 of a Camel and distributing it to the
poor in Makkah.
MIQAAT (Specified Time & Place of Worship):
1. Miqaat in terms of Time:
 For Hajj: The Months of Hajj
 For Umrah: At any time of the Year.
2. Miqaat in terms of Place:
 DHUL-HULAIFAH (Abbyar Ali): is for those coming
from/through Madinah.
 AL-JUHFAH (Near Rabigh): is for those coming
from/through Syria, Egypt, Morrocco.

from/through Yemen, India, Pakistan.
 QARN AL-MANAZIL (As-Sail Al-Kabeer): is for those
coming from/through Najd or Taif.
 THAT-IRQ: is for those coming from/through Iraq.
IHRAAM:
 Definition: Ihram is the intention to perform either Hajj or ‘Umrah, or
to make intention of performing both. (In this state certain lawful
things become forbidden to do).
 Ihram is a state of purity and holiness; a state of mind and body, one
is in, while performing Umrah.
 The two sheets that a pilgrim wears are also figuratively known as
Ihram but the real Ihram is its Niyyah & Talbiyah.
 Entering into the state of Ihram is the beginning of complete
transformation. We must enter into absolute dedication to Allah,
deciding that there is no reason we do Umrah; except for the pure
worship of our Creator.
 A man in Ihram is called Muhrim; a woman is called Muhrima
Mustahab (Desirable) & Preferred
things to do for Ihram:
 Ghusl (Mustahab)
 Putting on Perfume on Head & Beard. (Mustahab)
 Clipping finger & toe nails. (Preferred)
 Trimming Moustache. (Preferred)
 Shaving Pubic & under arm hair. (Preferred)
Clothes of Ihram:
For Men:
Two towels/sheets (Preferably white), one wrapped around the lower part of the body
& the other around the upper part of the body and to wear Sandals.
Note: IDHTIBA’A (Uncovering the Right shoulder is only done during Tawaaff).
For Women:
Wearing the clothes she usually wears when leaving the house, except for Gloves &
Niqaab (Type of veil that reveals the eyes)
Note: During Umrah a woman should (if possible) uncover her face if she is not in the
presence of non-mahram men. But since in present times it is not possible as the
Haram is always so full it is desirable that the sisters who think can attract men should
cover their faces but not with Niqaab rather make the scarf of the head to come on
the face.
Making Talbiyah:
1. Talbiyah starts just after Ihraam.
2. Begin with the intended act of worship by saying once,
“Labayk Allaahumma bi-‘Umrah”
(O Allah, here I am responding to you to make Umrah)
If one fears that they are likely to be subjected to illness or anything else that might
obstruct their Umrah, one may add the following, by doing so if one can not complete
the Umrah for whatever reason; then they simply cut their hair and do not have to
pay the ransom.
“Allaahumma mahillee haithu habastanee”
(I come out of the state of Ihraam from the place You prevent me from continuing).
Then repeatedly say until you start Tawaaff:
“Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-
ni’mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak”
(Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am. You have no partner. Here I am. Surely all
praise, grace and dominion is yours, and you have no partner.)
Talbiyyah

In’nal hamda wan’ni’mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak
Meaning:
Here I am, O Allah, Here I am. There is no partner with You. Here I am,
Surely all praise and graces are Yours, and so is the Dominion. There
is no partner with You.
Restrictions if violated that requires
compensation (fidyah):

 We are also restricted to make a Marriage contract or have an engagement or cut trees/ plants in the Haram area
(cutting trees is restricted even for Non- muhrims while in the boundaries of Haram). But we do not have to pay a fidiyah
rather it is a sin.
TAWAAFF (circling the Ka’bah in
worship)
Entering Masjid Al Haram
 Enter with your right foot
 Make duaa of the Masjid
 BISMILLAHI, ALLAHUMMA SALLI ‘ALAA MUHAMMADIN WA SALLIM – ALLAAHUMA AFTAH LEE
ABWAABA RAHMATIK (In the name of Allaah! O Allaah! Exalt the mention of your Messenger.
O Allaah! Forgive my sins, and open the gates of Your mercy for me).
Conditions of Tawaaff:
 Neeyah (intention)
 One must be in a state of Tahaarah.
 Circling the Ka’bah seven continual times, having the Ka’bah on the Left.
TAWAAF
1. Make Idhtiba’a: Men to leave their
right shoulder bare ONLY during the
entire Tawaf, after the tawaf men
need to cover both shoulders.
 Note: A person can do Tawaff in his
regular clothes if he is not doing
Umrah.
2. Start at the Black Stone, by either
 Kiss it if you can, if not
 Touch it with your right hand, if
not
 Face the Black Stone and point at
it with your right hand
 And say: ALLAHU AKBAR
 Note:This is said only when starting the
tawaaf. For the rest of the rounds when
reaching the Black Stone it is enough to
say“ ALLAHU AKBAR” (Allah is the most
great). For men, it is preferred to make
ramal (fast walk) during the first three
rounds and to walk (normally) between
the Yamaani Corner and the Black Stone.
Tawaaf
3. Du’aa’ during tawaaf: During tawaaf one can make du’aa’, tasbeeh, tahleel,
etc. "Subhan-Allah wal-hamdu-lillahi wa la ilaha ill-Allah wa-Allahu Akbar wa la
haula wa la quwwata illa-billah." There is no specific du’aa’ for each round.
4. The Yamaani Corner: When you reach the Yamaani Corner, touch with right
hand. If not possible, do not kiss or point.
 Between the Yamaani Corner and the Black Stone say: “RABBANA AATINA FIDDUNYA
HASANATAN WA FIL-AAKHIRATI HASANTAN WA QINA ‘ADHAABAN-NAAR”
 “Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us
from the torment of the fire)’.
TAWAAF – Maqaam of Ibraheem
5. The Maqaam of Ibraheem:
 After finishing tawaaf, cover both arms; and while going to Maqaam of
Ibraheem say: “WATAKHITHU MIN-MAQAMI-IBRAHEEMA MUSALLA”
 “And take of the Maqaam of Ibraheem a place of prayer.” (Al-Baqarah:
125)
 Pray two short Rak’ahs, as close as conveniently possible behind Maqaam-e
Ibraheem. If it is not possible then you can pray them anywhere in the sacred
mosque.
 Pray two rak’ahs behind Maqaam of ibraheem:
 Recite (preferably) Surat al-Kafiroon (109) in the 1st Rak’ah.
 Recite (preferably) Surat al-Ikhlaas (112) in the 2nd Rak’ah.
Tawaaf - ZamZam
 Make duaa before drinking.
 Drink Zam Zam water to your fill.
 Pour water over your head (Do not over do it rather take it in
your palms and pour it on the head)
 *The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: “The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk
for.” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 3062; this is a hasan hadeeth.
Scholars and righteous people have experienced this – they have
drunk it with the intention of fulfilling some need such as
healing from sickness or being freed from poverty and distress,
and Allaah fulfilled these hopes).
Sa’iy (walking between as-Safa & al-
Marwah in worship)
Conditions of Sa’iy:
 1. Niyyah (intention).
 2. To make tawaaf first.
 3. To make seven continual trips,
starting from as-Safa and ending at
al-Marwah.
 Note:
 Walking from as-Safa to al-Marwah is
considered one trip; and from al-
Marwah back to as-Safa is another
trip.
 Having Wudoo is highly recommended
but not obligatory.
SA’IY
1. Start from as-Safa:
 At the bottom of the hill of as-Safa say: “INNAS-SAFA WAL-MARWATA MIN SHA’A;IRILLAH, ABDAU BUMA BADA ALLAHU
BIH” “Verily, As-Safa & Al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah.” (Al-Baqarah: 158) “I start with what Allah started with.”
 Note: This is said only when starting the sa’iy, and should not be repeated.
2. Climb up the hill of as-Safa, face the Ka’bah, raise hands in du’aa’ and
 “ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR” “LA LAAHA ILLAL-LAAHU WAHDAHU LA SHAREEKA LAH, LAHUL MULKU WA
LAHUL HAMD WA HUWA ‘ALA KULLI SHAY’IN QADEER” “LA ILAAHA ILLAL-LAAHU WAHDAHU, ANJAZA WA’DAHU WA NASARA
‘ABDAHU WA HAZAMAL AHZAABA WAHDAH” “Allah is the most great, Allah is the most great, Allah is the most great.” “None
has the right to be worshiped except Allah alone, without any partners, to him belongs the dominion, to him praise is due,
and he has power over all things.” “None has the right to be worshiped except Allah alone, He fulfilled his promise, and made
his slave prevail, and he defeated the clans all alone.”
 say 3 times by each time followed by Dua( Then you Praise Allah, Send Salaam upon Muhammad (sa) and then make as much personal
Du’as as you like. Pray for anything from the goodness of this life and the next, pray for both yourself and others.)
 Du’aa’ during Sa’iy: During sa’iy one can make du’aa’, tasbeeh, tahleel, etc..
 Note: There is no specific du’aa’ while walking between as-Safa and al-Marwah.
3. Standing on the hill of al-Marwah:
 Climb up the hill of al-Marwah, face the Ka’bah, raise hands in du’aa’ and say what was said on the
hill of as-Safa (Allahu akbar…)
 Note: For males, it is preferred during Sa’iy to run between the two green signs.
Shaving / cutting hair
 Men: Shaving the head is
3 times better than
cutting the hair. They
should trim all the way
round and not just small
pieces from each corner.
 Women: Cutting a small
piece from their hair is
sufficient.
 Now all Ihraam rules are
lifted, and your Umrah is
completed!!!
When Shaving or Trimming
 Shave your complete head, do not leave parts unshaved.
 If you shall trim, take from all sides of your head.
 Do not take off your Ihram until you have shaved or trimmed.
You are still in Ihram until you do so.
 Do not shave your beard.

Conditions of the Obligation of
Hajj
 Islam
 Sanity
 Puberty
 Ability to Perform Hajj
 Free
 Mahram for a woman.
Types of Hajj
 Ifrad, to perform Hajj only , No Umrah.
 Qeran Hajj, to perform Hajj and Umrah together with one tawaf and one
Sa’ee.
 Tamat’tu, to perform the Umrah in the month of Hajj and then to enter
the state of Ihram for Hajj on the 8th.
 What is the best type???
Pillars of Hajj
 Ihram
 Standing on Arafah
 Tawaf al-Ifadah
 The Sa’ee( For Hajj)
Whoever does not perform one of them
intentionally; his Hajj would be null and void.
Waajib of Hajj
 Ihram from Meqat
 Standing on Arafah till sunset
 Sleeping in Muzdalifah
 Sleeping in Mina,
 Stoning at Jamarat
 Shaving or trimming (evenly) the hair
 Tawaf al-Wada
The Waajibaat of Hajj: If one of them is missed out it
requires an offering to be Sacrifise in Makkah and distributed
among the poor people there. The one who offers it should
not eat from its meat. If one cannot afford an offering, he
must observe ten days of fasting instead; three during the
Hajj and seven upon returning home.
Hajj Day 1 : 8th of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah (The Day of al-Tarwiyah)
 Step 1: Prepare for ihram :
 In your hotel room , Clip finger & toe nails, take a shower ,shave underarm and pubic hair, and put on perfume
before wearing white towels (ihram cloths). For women there is no specific clothing for ihram , but they have
to wear Islamic clothing ( Abaya with proper hijab).
 Pray 2 rakah Nafl prayer.
 Step 2: Make a vocal intention for Ihram :
 That is the whole point of Hajj Tamattu‘.Basically , you will make the niyyah in where you are staying in
Makkah. So, In your hotel room you will make a vocal intention for ihram by saying : “Labbayk Allaahumma
Hajjan (Here I am, O Allaah, for Hajj).”
 Begin reciting the Talbiyah:
 “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, Innal hamda wanni‘mata laka walmulk Laa
sharika lak”
 Continue to recite the Talbiyah out loud throughout the trip.
 Step 3 : Going to Mina :
 The Sunnah is pilgrim should go to Mina before Zuhr time and pray Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr there ON
TIME , shortening the prayers but not joining them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) used to shorten his prayers in Mina but he did not join them. Shortening the prayers means making the
four-rakah prayers two rakahs. you should pray sunnah of Fajr and Witr salah as well. Spend the day and night
in Mina. Remember to do Talbiyah constantly . Do lots of Ibadah like recite Qur’ān, dhikr, du‘a.
Hajj Day 2 : 9th of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah (The Day of Arafah)
 1st Step:
 After sunrise leave for Arafah.
 2nd Step:

*Utilize your time supplicating Allah and to recite Dhikr.
Seek Allah's forgiveness and ask Him to guide your parents.
 3rd Step:
 After sunset leave for Muzdalifah. *Move quietly and
recite Talbiyyah.
Muzdalifah
 1st Step:
 Upon reaching Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha there.
 2nd Step:
 Spend the night and pray Fajr there.
 3rd Step:
 Pick up 7 stones for Jamratul Aqabah (Recommended)
 4th Step:
 Leave Muzdalifah for Mina.
 Recite the Talbiyyah, and do not stop till you stone Jamratul-Aqabah.
Hajj Day 3: 10th of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah (The Day of NAHR(SACRIFICE)
 1st Step:
 * Face the Qiblah and supplicate Allah wherever you are in Muzdalifah, and
recite the following supplication: La illaha illallah wahdahu la shareeka
lahu lahul mulk walahul hamdu wahuwa ala kulli shai'in qadeer. Keep
supplicating until very late that morning.
 Step 2:
 Go to Mina before sunrise, and stone Jamratul-Aqabah. Stone it
consecutively 7 times. Pronounce the Takbeer each time you throw a
stone.
 After casting your pebbles slaughter your sacrificial animal or have it
slaughtered. It is praiseworthy to eat from your sacrificial animal. *Do not
shove or push people...perform the rituals in an appropriate manner.
 Step 3:
 Trim your hair evenly, or shave it. You can have a shower, and
 Then proceed to Makkah to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’iee for Hajj.
 Step 4:
 Spend the night in Mina
Hajj Day 4 and 5: 11th and 12th of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah(The Day of Tashreeq).
 1st Step:
 Go to the Jamrah area in Mina. Start with the Jamrah as-Sughra (i.e. the smallest).

Hajj Day 6 : 13th of Dhu’l-Hijjah(The Day of Tashreeq) (Optional)
 The 13th is optional. Ḥajj is five or six days. On the 13th if you are staying in
Mina then do the same action as mentioned in step Day 4 & 5
 Proceed to Mecca
Farewell Tawaf
 Make Tawaf seven times around the Ka’bah similar to the
method mentioned in the “Steps of Umrah”. Start at the Black
Stone, and each time you pass it, either point, kiss it or touch
it (if you touch it, kiss your hand).
 Say Takbeer each time you pass it.
 While making Tawaf supplicate to Allah or make Dhikr. End
each round at the Black Stone.
 The prophet(saw) said: The people were ordered to perform
the tawaaf of the Ka’bah as the lastly thing, before
leaving(Mecca) except the menstruating women who were
exempt(Bukhari)

Common Misconceptions & Mistakes for Ihram
 Do not pass the Miqat without being in the state of Ihram. If you are landing in Jeddah and going
to Mecca to perform ‘Umrah directly, you must be in a state of Ihram before you land, as the plane shall enter the Miqat.
Jeddah is inside the Miqat.
 If you are landing in Jeddah, you need your Ihram towels with you on the airplane in your carry-on bag.
 Women may wear anything Islamically permissible for Ihram.
 If someone is travelling to Jeddah for business or to meet his relatives mainly but also
intend to make Umrah in that trip than he must either have his Ihram from meeqaat or go
back to meeqaat when he wants to do Umrah. But if there was no intention of Umrah and
the stay is prolonged for a reason and the person decides to perform umrah than inshaAllah
he can resume Ihram from Jeddah.
 Some people think that it is essential to enter ihraam wearing shoes, and that if a person is
not wearing shoes when he enters ihraam, then it is not permissible for him to put them on.
This is a mistake because it is not essential to wear shoes when entering ihraam. Ihraam may
be done without wearing shoes, and if a person enters ihraam without wearing shoes, that
does not mean that he cannot put them on afterwards. He can put shoes on afterwards if he
wasn’t wearing them when he entered ihraam – there is nothing wrong with that.
 Some of them believe that it is obligatory to pray two rak’ahs when entering ihraam. This is
also a mistake; it is not obligatory to pray two rak’ahs when entering ihraam.
 If a person does ghusl and puts on the ihraam garments, then he can pray the prayer for
Tahiyatul Wudoo or if it is the time of prayer, such as if the time for an obligatory prayer
has come or is approaching, and he wants to stay at the meeqaat until he has prayed. With
regard to intending to pray a specific prayer in ihraam, the most correct opinion is that
there is no specific prayer for entering ihraam.
 It is allowed to wear a belt in Ihram either stitched or not as the prohibition on Stiches is
only for garments covering the limbs.
Common Misconceptions & Mistakes for Ihram
 Not recommended to take pictures of yourself in Ihram. You came to worship Allah and taking pictures for showing
others later may contradict your sincerity of doing this for the sake of Allah.
 Women in their menses must be in a state of Ihram when they pass the Miqat. They should shower and do Talbiyah like
everyone else.
 Do not uncover your right shoulder until you reach the Ka’bah and begin Tawaf. This is the time that the Messenger
uncovered his shoulder and it is an act of Hajj, so we must follow when the Prophet did it.
 You do not enter into Ihram by just wearing the towels. You must make the intention to begin.
 Do not shave your beard, whether before, during or after Ihram
 You should wear sandals, but if you do not have sandals, you do not have to walk barefoot. Wear what you have until
you find a place to get sandals.
 When you hear that you are not allowed to wear stitches in Ihram, know that what is meant is that you cannot wear
pieces of cloth that are sewn together to wrap your body, such as a T-Shirt or underwear.
 Both men and women may shower with unscented soap. Yes, for women and men, you may comb your hair, as the
Prophet’s wives used to do when they were in Ihram.
 Some people think that it is essential for the pilgrim doing Hajj or ‘Umrah to enter through a specific gate of al-Masjid
al-Haraam. So some people think that if they are doing ‘Umrah they must enter through the gate called Baab al-‘Umrah,
and that this is essential and is prescribed in sharee’ah. Others think that they must enter through Baab al-Salaam, and
that entering through any other gate is a sin or is makrooh. There is no basis for this. The pilgrim doing Hajj or ‘Umrah
may enter through any gate, but when he enters the mosque he should enter with his right foot first and say what is
narrated for entering all mosques,
 Some people have invented specific du’aa’s for when one enters the Mosque and sees the Ka’bah, and have introduced
du’aa’s that were not narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). This is a kind of bid’ah
(innovation).
 A lot of men have thier lower towel too low which goes below the ankles or too high which goes above the knees. Both
these cases are not right as it is Haram to have a garment below the ankles or above the knees displaying the Aurah.
 Also a lot of men have their lower garment tied up below their bellies which again is a part of Aurah and is haram to
display.
Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf
 You do not have to say your intention out loud to begin Tawaf. Saying intentions
out loud is something the Prophet (peace be upon him) never did except after
Ihram when he said, (Labbayk Allahumma ‘Umrah).
 You do not have to touch the black stone for your Tawaf to be accepted. If it is
crowded you may face your hand toward the stone and say Allahu Akbar.
 Do not kiss the Yemeni corner. You may only touch it with your right hand.
 Do not worship the black stone. You are glorifying Allah by coming to this house
and worshiping Him, following the Sunnah of the prophet of Allah (peace be upon
him).
 The Black stone cannot benefit or harm anyone it is only a Sunnah to kiss it.
 It is not prescribed to push and shove when touching the Black Stone or the
Yemeni Corner, rather if it is easy for you to do so in a calm and dignified manner,
then you must do it, and if it is not easy for you to do it, then you should just
point to the Black Stone.
 Do not follow those Du’a books that make up Du’a for each time you go around
the Ka’bah. Read Quran and make Du’a from your heart and glorify Allah.
 Make Du’a by yourself, do not do it in a shouting group around the Ka’bah.
Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf
 Do not wipe the walls of the Ka’bah during Tawaf. The prophet of Allah did not touch anything other than the black
stone and the Yemeni corner.
 Do not face your hand to the Yemeni corner and say Allahu Akbar. This is only for the black stone.
 The Ka’bah should be to your left. Do not do Tawaf with your back to the Ka’bah.
 Do not stand at the black stone line for a long time. Move on.
 Do not lengthen your 2 Rak’ah of Tawaf.
 Sometimes the pilgrim while doing the tawaf just entertains a doubt about correctness of the round that he is doing
that moment –it is just a doubt and he is not sure of having committed a mistake– and so he ignores that round and
starts it again. This invalidates the tawaf, based on precaution, except when it is done out of ignorance.
 After having completed the seven rounds of the tawaf, sometimes the pilgrim adds one or more rounds on basis of
precaution. This is incorrect and based on precaution it renders the entire tawaf invalid except if he was ignorant of
this ruling.
 Sometimes the pilgrim entertains doubt in the number of rounds in a sunnat tawaf, and then he thinks that doubt in
a sunnat tawaf invalidates his tawaf so he starts his tawaf anew. This is incorrect because he can always resolve the
doubt by accepting the lesser number and then proceed with the rest of the rounds of tawaf.
 Sometimes jama‘at prayers is held in the Sacred Mosque while the pilgrim is doing his tawaf for ‘umrah, and that
forces him to interrupt his tawaf and then he joins in the jama‘at. After the prayers, he starts the tawaf from the
very beginning thinking that the prayer between the rounds of tawaf invalidated his tawaf.
 This is an incorrect notion because the gap in between the rounds of tawaf for sake of joining the jama‘at does not
harm the validity of the tawaf. In such a case, he should continue his tawaf from wherever he had stopped for the
jama‘at and there is no need for starting it from the beginning.
 Some pilgrims think that doing the salat of tawaf “behind the Maqam Ibrahim” means that doing it at a place
closest to the Maqam. However, that is not the correct understanding; rather it is sufficient to say the salat at any
place which is normally considered to be “behind the Maqam”.
Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf
 Uttering the intention out loud when wanting to do tawaaf, so you see the
pilgrim standing facing the Black Stone when he wants to do tawaaf, saying,
“O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf for ‘Umrah” or “O Allaah, I
intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf for Hajj,” or “O Allaah, I intend to do
seven circuits of tawaaf in order to draw closer to You.”
 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did tawaaf before
you and he did not speak the intention out loud when he did tawaaf. The
Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did tawaaf before you and did
not speak the intention out loud when they did tawaaf, or when doing any
other act of worship, so this is a mistake.
 Some of those who do tawaaf push and shove too much when they touch the
Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner, and they are disturbed by the
overcrowding and disturb others. They may be pushing and shoving a woman,
and the Shaytaan may tempt him and fill his heart with desire when he is
crowding this woman in this narrow place. People are only human and may be
overwhelmed by their souls that prompt them to do evil, so an evil action
may take place in the shadow of the House of Allaah. This is a matter that
becomes even worse in light of where it takes place, although it is a fitnah in
any place it happens.
Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf
 Although preferable, you do not have to have Wudu during Sa’i.
 You do not have to climb to the top of Safa or Marwah.
 You can take breaks in Sa’i to drink water or rest.
 You can take a break after Tawaf, before Sa’i.
 You do not have to jog the whole way, from Safa to Marwah. Only within the
green lights, the valley of Safa and Marwah.
 Women do not have to run between the green lights.
 There is no specific Du’a to say between Safa and Marwah.
 Do not miss the Du’a that the prophet of Allah said when he stood on Safa.
Then raise your hands and pray as he did (peace be upon him).
 Do not say your intention out loud before making Sa’i.
Medina
Visiting the Prophet(SAW) Mosque:
 Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrates from the Prophet S.A.W that he said: You should
not undertake a special journey to visit any place other than the three
Mosques: the Sacred Mosque of Makkah, this Mosque of mine, and Al-Aqsa
Mosque (in Jerusalem). [Bukhaari and Muslim].
 He also narrates that the Prophet S.A.W said: One prayer in this Mosque of
mine is better than a thousand prayers offered anywhere else except the
Sacred Mosque. [Reported by the group]. And in the narration of Abdullaah ibn
az-Zubayr as reported by Ahmad, he S.A.W said: …and a prayer in the Sacred
Mosque is better than a hundred prayers in this one.
 Therefore, it is sunnah for the pilgrim as well as others to visit the masjid of
the Prophet S.A.W either before or after Hajj/Umrah in order to offer salaah
(prayers) in it. However, it is not a condition or a part of the Hajj/Umrah; as
a matter of fact, visiting the masjid of the Prophet S.A.W has no connection
with the Hajj/Umrah itself.
Rawdah Mubarak (Sacred chamber):
Riadhul Jannah
 Abu Hurayrah (RA) also narrates that the Prophet S.A.Wsaid: Between my house
and my minbar is a garden (raudhah) from the gardens of paradise, and my
minbar is on my haudh (cistern). [Bukhari].
Mehrab (Prayer niche) & Mimbar(Pulpit)

Visiting the Jannahtul Baqi:
Visit al-Baqee’, which is the

and Muslims. We will, when Allaah
wills, join you. May Allaah have
mercy on those who were first (to
die) and those who were last. We ask
Allaah to grant salvation to us and

not astray after they are gone;

A journey of lifetime and hajj & umrah step by step 2018

  • 2. Journey to Mecca  Ibrahim(as) started the journey with his family and son Ismail  The desert of the Arabian Peninsula and came to an uncultivated valley having no fruit, no trees, no food, no water. The valley had no sign of life.  Ibrahim droped his family on that land  She asked him: "Did Allah command you to do so?" He replied: "Yes." Then his great wife said: "We are not going to be lost, since Allah, Who has commanded you, is with us."  Ibraham invoked Almighty Allah thus: "0 our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley with no cultivation, by Your Sacred House (the Kaba at Mecca); in order, 0 our Lord, that they may offer prayers perfectly (Iqamat-as- Salat), so fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (0 Allah) provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks. 0 our Lord! Certainly, You know what we conceal and what we reveal. Nothing on the earth or in the heaven is hidden from Allah." Surah 14: 37-38
  • 3. The Prophet Muhammad said: 'This is the source of the tradition of the Sa'y (One of the rituals of the hajj, or pilgrimage) the going of people between them (i.e. As-Safa and Al-Marwa). When she reached Al- Marwa (for the last time) she heard a voice and she asked herself to be quiet and listened attentively. She heard the voice again and said: '0, (whoever you may be)! You have made me hear your voice; have you got something to help me?' And behold! She saw an angel at the place of Zam-zam, digging the earth with his heel (or his wing) till water flowed from that place. She started to make something like a basin around it, using her hand in this way, and started filling her water-skin with water with her hands, and the water was flowing out after she had scooped some of it." The Prophet added: "May Allah bestow mercy on Ishmael's mother! Had she let the Zam-zam (flow without trying to control it or had she not scooped from that water to fill her water-skin), Zam-zam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth." Hajar Sees Zamzam
  • 4. The Prophet(saw) continued: 'Then she drank (water) and suckled her child. The angel said to her: 'Don't be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father, and Allah never neglects His people.' The House (i.e. Kaba) at that time was on a high place resembling a hillock, and when torrents came, they flowed to its right and left. "She lived in that way till some people from the tribe of Jurhum or a family from Jurhum passed by her and her child, as they (i.e. the Jurhum people) were coming through the way of Kada'. They landed in the lower part of Mecca where they saw a bird that had the habit of flying around water and not leaving it. They said: 'This bird must be flying around water, though we know that there is no water in this valley.' They sent one or two messengers who discovered the source of water and returned to inform them of the water. So, they all came (towards the water). Ishmael's mother was sitting near the water. They asked her: 'Do you allow us to stay with you?' She replied: 'Yes, but you will have no right to possess the water.' They agreed to that. Ishmael's mother was pleased with the whole situation, as she used to love to enjoy the company of the people. So, they settled there, and later on they sent for their families, who came and settled with them so that some families became permanent residents there. The child (i.e. Ishmael) grew up and learned Arabic from them and (his virtues) caused them to love and admire him as he grew up, and when he reached the age of puberty they made him marry a woman from amongst them. Mecca Settled
  • 5.  Ismail grows up and with him grows Ibrahim’s attachment to his son, and bearing in mind the sound state of Ibrahim’s heart, this was an issue, for there mustn’t be anything in the heart of this colossal man that competes with his attachment to Allah. Thus, the painful command came to Ibrahim; to sacrifice his son. He sees this dream over and over and thus realizes that this must be carried out and so he submits. He tells his son: • “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I sacrifice you, so see what you think.”  Ismail’s response was one of Abrahamic submission. He said • “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.  This is when Ibrahim does the unthinkable. He walks with his son to the place where the sacrifice will be carried out. Shaytan makes his presence known at this point and tries to talk Ibrahim out of this, but Ibrahim pelts him with 7 stones. He appears a second and third time and, on each occasion, Ibrahim launches stones at him.  At this point, it’s as if the motion of the universe had momentarily paused in anticipation of what is about to happen next. His son had knelt down and the knife was been placed on this throat, as Ibrahim forcefully suppresses the fatherly obsession with one’s son. Allah said, • “And when they had both submitted and he put him down prostrating on his forehead”  This is when Ibrahim was told to stop, • “We called to him, “O Ibrahim, You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.” The Sacrifice
  • 6. Allah commands Ibrahim to build the first Masjid on earth and Ibrahim submits. Allah said, “Indeed, the first House of worship established for mankind was that at Makkah – full of blessing and a guidance for the worlds.” [3:96] Ibrahim said, ‘O Ismail! Allah has given me an order.’ Ismail said, ‘Do what your Lord has ordered you to do.’ Ibrahim asked, ‘Will you help me?’ Ismail said, ‘I will help you.’ Ibrahim said, ‘Allah has ordered me to build a house here,’ pointing to a hillock higher than the land surrounding it.’ The Prophet added, “Then they raised the foundations of the House (i.e. the Ka‘bah). Ismail brought the stones and Ibrahim was building; and when the walls became high, Ismail brought this stone and put it for Ibrahim who stood over it and carried on building, while Ismail was handing him the stones, and both of them were saying: O our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily, You are the All-Hearer the All-Knower.’” (V.2:127). [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith No.583]. The Construction of Ibrahim
  • 7. Ismail collected stones for his father who then placed them one above the other. His style of building did not require cement to keep solid. As the House grew higher, Ibrahim was no longer able to reach the higher level. This is when something miraculous happened. Jibreel (alayhissalam) came down with a stone from Jannah for Ibrahim to stand on. This special stone lifted and gave him higher reach. While he stood above ground, Ismail continued to hand him stones for construction. This special stone of Jannah also became soft and made a deep imprint of the feet of Ibrahim. This is what we now know as Maqam Ibrahim. Allah (swt) commanded Ibrahim and Ismail to leave a vacant space in one of the corners of the Kabah. Jibreel again came down with a stone from Jannah to be placed as the cornerstone of the House of Allah. This is what we now know as Al-Hijr Al- Aswad (The Black Stone). The Two Stones from Jannah
  • 8. “Show us our Manasik[2:128]”, Jibril then came down, took him to the House and said, `Raise its foundations.' Ibrahim raised the House's foundations and completed the building. Jibril held Ibrahim's hand, led him to As-Safa and said, `This is among the rituals of Allah.' He then took him to Al-Marwah and said, `And this is among the rituals of Allah.' He then took him to Mina until when they reached the `Aqabah, they found Iblis standing next to a tree. Jibril said, `Say Takbir (Allah is the Great) and throw (pebbles) at him.' Ibrahim said the Takbir and threw (pebbles at) Iblis. Iblis moved to the middle Jamrah, and when Jibril and Ibrahim passed by him, Jibril said to Ibrahim, `Say Takbir and throw at him.' Ibrahim threw at him and said Takbir. The devious Iblis sought to add some evil acts to the rituals of Hajj, but he was unable to succeed. Jibril took Ibrahim's hand and led him to Al-Mash`ar Al-Haram and `Arafat and said to him, `Have you `Arafta (known, learned) what I showed you' thrice. Ibrahim said, `Yes I did.''' Manasik from Ibrahim

  • 14. Allah commands Ibrahim to invite the world to it. “And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass. That they may witness benefits for themselves.” [22:27] Ibn ‘Abbaas(ra) said, “When Allaah commanded Prophet Ibraaheem to proclaim Hajj among people, he said: ‘My Lord, how can I convey the message to the people as my voice cannot reach them?’ Allaah said, ‘You call; it is Our duty to make it reach (everyone)!’ So, he stood in his position and said, ‘O you people! Your Lord has chosen a House, so perform pilgrimage to it.’ It was said that the mountains became leveled and his voice reached all parts of the earth and all that are in the wombs and loins of men were made to hear the call and everything that heard it, responded. So those for whom Allaah has decreed to perform Hajj till the Day of Judgment responded with the saying, ‘Labbayka Allaahumma Labbayk (Here I am at your service, O Allaah, here I am).’ Hajj to Mankind
  • 15.  Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah – blessed and a guidance for the worlds.  In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds. Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:96-97  Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Islam is built upon five (pillars): testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing regular prayer, paying Zakaah, Hajj and fasting Ramadan.” (Bukhaari, 8; Muslim, 16)  Messenger of Allaah(SAW) gave a sermon and said: “O people, Allaah has enjoined Hajj upon you, so do Hajj.” (Muslim)  Ibn Abbas (R.A) said that The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Whoever wants to go for Hajj, let him hasten to do it, because he may fall ill or some other problems may arise.” (Abu Dawood, 1732) Hajj – One of the Islamic Pillars
  • 16.  Hajj is one of the Best deeds : Abu Hurayrah (R.A) reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) was asked which deed is best. He said, “Belief in Allah and His Messenger.” He was asked, then what? He said, “Jihaad for the sake of Allah.” He was asked, then what? He said, “An accepted Hajj.” (Bukhaari, 26; Muslim, 83)  Hajj wipes away the sins: Abu Huraira (R.A) said: I heard the Prophet (P.B.U.H) say: “Whoever does Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), commit sin, or dispute unjustly during the Hajj, will come back like the day his mother gave birth to him. (Bukhari, 1449; Muslim, 1350) Hajj – One of the Islamic Pillars
  • 17.  An accepted Pilgrimage (Hajj) has reward of Paradise : Abu Hurayrah (R.A) reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Umrah is expiation for the time between it and the previous Umrah; and an accepted hajj has no less a reward than Paradise.” (Bukhari, 1683; Muslim, 1349)  The Pilgrim is a Guest of Allah (swt): Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “The one who fights for the sake of Allah and the pilgrim who goes for Hajj or Umrah are all guests of Allah. He called them and they responded; they ask of Him and He will give them.” (Ibn Maajah, 2893)  Hajj eliminates Sins and poverty: Abdullah ibn Masood (R.A) said that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Keep on doing Hajj and Umrah, for they eliminate poverty and sin just as the bellows eliminate impurities from iron and gold and silver.” (al- Tirmidhi, 810; al-Nasaa’i, 2631) Hajj – One of the Islamic Pillars
  • 19. Definition of Umrah  Linguistically: to visit  Juridically: Umrah is a way of worshipping Allah by making Tawaf of the Ka’bah and Sayi between Mount Safa and Marwa and shaving or cutting Hair.  Islamic Ruling on Hajj  And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake the journey [3:97]  It Is Obligatory at least once in a lifetime as found in this Hadeeth Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah ( ‫ﷺ‬) said, "Islam is based on five (pillars), testifying the fact that La ilaha illallah wa anna Muhammad-ar-Rasul-ullah [there is no true god except Allah, and Muhammad (( ‫ﷺ‬)) is the Messenger of Allah], establishing As- Salat, paying Zakat, the pilgrimage to the House, and the Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
  • 20. Virtues of Umrah  The act of Umrah is known to cleanse one’s soul from past committed sins. It is advised to do Umrah more than once in your lifetime so that it can act as a washing of the sins from the last time one performed Umrah. Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that the Prophet(S.A.W.) said, ‘An Umrah to another Umrah will be redemption of sins for whatever (minor) occurs between them.’ (Bukhari, Muslim)  Performing Umrah also protects one from poverty since they are there solely for the sake of Allah (SWT) spending their wealth and time in completing the deed. Ibn Mas’ood (R) said that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said, ‘Follow up the Hajj and Umrah, because they certainly remove poverty and sins as fire separates the impurities from iron, gold and silver.’ (Tirmidhi). Also Umar bin Khattab (R) said that Prophet (S.A.W.) said, ‘Follow up between the Hajj and Umrah, because certainly succession between the two of them increases the life span and dispels poverty and sins as fire removes impurities.’ (Baihaqi)
  • 21. Virtues of Umrah  Like Hajj, the act of Umrah is amongst the best deeds one can perform when pleasing Allah (swt). Allah (SWT) loves those who strive in his path in hopes of pleasing Him alone and Umrah is an act in which Allah (SWT) considers the pilgrim to be answering His call. Ibn Umar (R) narrates that Prophet (S.A.W.) said, ‘The warrior in the cause of Allah, the pilgrim and the one who is performing Umrah are all the delegation of Allah. He called them and they responded and they will ask of His bestowals and He will give it to them.’ (Ibn Majah)  In the blessed month of Ramadan, the reward of performing Umrah is equal to that of performing Hajj with the Prophet (S.A.W.)

  • 29. Making Talbiyah: 1. Talbiyah starts just after Ihraam. 2. Begin with the intended act of worship by saying once, “Labayk Allaahumma bi-‘Umrah” (O Allah, here I am responding to you to make Umrah) If one fears that they are likely to be subjected to illness or anything else that might obstruct their Umrah, one may add the following, by doing so if one can not complete the Umrah for whatever reason; then they simply cut their hair and do not have to pay the ransom. “Allaahumma mahillee haithu habastanee” (I come out of the state of Ihraam from the place You prevent me from continuing). Then repeatedly say until you start Tawaaff: “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan- ni’mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak” (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Scholars and righteous people have experienced this – they have drunk it with the intention of fulfilling some need such as healing from sickness or being freed from poverty and distress, and Allaah fulfilled these hopes).

  • 56. Common Misconceptions & Mistakes for Ihram  Do not pass the Miqat without being in the state of Ihram. If you are landing in Jeddah and going to Mecca to perform ‘Umrah directly, you must be in a state of Ihram before you land, as the plane shall enter the Miqat. Jeddah is inside the Miqat.  If you are landing in Jeddah, you need your Ihram towels with you on the airplane in your carry-on bag.  Women may wear anything Islamically permissible for Ihram.  If someone is travelling to Jeddah for business or to meet his relatives mainly but also intend to make Umrah in that trip than he must either have his Ihram from meeqaat or go back to meeqaat when he wants to do Umrah. But if there was no intention of Umrah and the stay is prolonged for a reason and the person decides to perform umrah than inshaAllah he can resume Ihram from Jeddah.  Some people think that it is essential to enter ihraam wearing shoes, and that if a person is not wearing shoes when he enters ihraam, then it is not permissible for him to put them on. This is a mistake because it is not essential to wear shoes when entering ihraam. Ihraam may be done without wearing shoes, and if a person enters ihraam without wearing shoes, that does not mean that he cannot put them on afterwards. He can put shoes on afterwards if he wasn’t wearing them when he entered ihraam – there is nothing wrong with that.  Some of them believe that it is obligatory to pray two rak’ahs when entering ihraam. This is also a mistake; it is not obligatory to pray two rak’ahs when entering ihraam.  If a person does ghusl and puts on the ihraam garments, then he can pray the prayer for Tahiyatul Wudoo or if it is the time of prayer, such as if the time for an obligatory prayer has come or is approaching, and he wants to stay at the meeqaat until he has prayed. With regard to intending to pray a specific prayer in ihraam, the most correct opinion is that there is no specific prayer for entering ihraam.  It is allowed to wear a belt in Ihram either stitched or not as the prohibition on Stiches is only for garments covering the limbs.
  • 57. Common Misconceptions & Mistakes for Ihram  Not recommended to take pictures of yourself in Ihram. You came to worship Allah and taking pictures for showing others later may contradict your sincerity of doing this for the sake of Allah.  Women in their menses must be in a state of Ihram when they pass the Miqat. They should shower and do Talbiyah like everyone else.  Do not uncover your right shoulder until you reach the Ka’bah and begin Tawaf. This is the time that the Messenger uncovered his shoulder and it is an act of Hajj, so we must follow when the Prophet did it.  You do not enter into Ihram by just wearing the towels. You must make the intention to begin.  Do not shave your beard, whether before, during or after Ihram  You should wear sandals, but if you do not have sandals, you do not have to walk barefoot. Wear what you have until you find a place to get sandals.  When you hear that you are not allowed to wear stitches in Ihram, know that what is meant is that you cannot wear pieces of cloth that are sewn together to wrap your body, such as a T-Shirt or underwear.  Both men and women may shower with unscented soap. Yes, for women and men, you may comb your hair, as the Prophet’s wives used to do when they were in Ihram.  Some people think that it is essential for the pilgrim doing Hajj or ‘Umrah to enter through a specific gate of al-Masjid al-Haraam. So some people think that if they are doing ‘Umrah they must enter through the gate called Baab al-‘Umrah, and that this is essential and is prescribed in sharee’ah. Others think that they must enter through Baab al-Salaam, and that entering through any other gate is a sin or is makrooh. There is no basis for this. The pilgrim doing Hajj or ‘Umrah may enter through any gate, but when he enters the mosque he should enter with his right foot first and say what is narrated for entering all mosques,  Some people have invented specific du’aa’s for when one enters the Mosque and sees the Ka’bah, and have introduced du’aa’s that were not narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). This is a kind of bid’ah (innovation).  A lot of men have thier lower towel too low which goes below the ankles or too high which goes above the knees. Both these cases are not right as it is Haram to have a garment below the ankles or above the knees displaying the Aurah.  Also a lot of men have their lower garment tied up below their bellies which again is a part of Aurah and is haram to display.
  • 58. Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf  You do not have to say your intention out loud to begin Tawaf. Saying intentions out loud is something the Prophet (peace be upon him) never did except after Ihram when he said, (Labbayk Allahumma ‘Umrah).  You do not have to touch the black stone for your Tawaf to be accepted. If it is crowded you may face your hand toward the stone and say Allahu Akbar.  Do not kiss the Yemeni corner. You may only touch it with your right hand.  Do not worship the black stone. You are glorifying Allah by coming to this house and worshiping Him, following the Sunnah of the prophet of Allah (peace be upon him).  The Black stone cannot benefit or harm anyone it is only a Sunnah to kiss it.  It is not prescribed to push and shove when touching the Black Stone or the Yemeni Corner, rather if it is easy for you to do so in a calm and dignified manner, then you must do it, and if it is not easy for you to do it, then you should just point to the Black Stone.  Do not follow those Du’a books that make up Du’a for each time you go around the Ka’bah. Read Quran and make Du’a from your heart and glorify Allah.  Make Du’a by yourself, do not do it in a shouting group around the Ka’bah.
  • 59. Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf  Do not wipe the walls of the Ka’bah during Tawaf. The prophet of Allah did not touch anything other than the black stone and the Yemeni corner.  Sometimes the pilgrim while doing the tawaf just entertains a doubt about correctness of the round that he is doing that moment –it is just a doubt and he is not sure of having committed a mistake– and so he ignores that round and starts it again. This invalidates the tawaf, based on precaution, except when it is done out of ignorance.  After having completed the seven rounds of the tawaf, sometimes the pilgrim adds one or more rounds on basis of precaution. This is incorrect and based on precaution it renders the entire tawaf invalid except if he was ignorant of this ruling.  Sometimes the pilgrim entertains doubt in the number of rounds in a sunnat tawaf, and then he thinks that doubt in a sunnat tawaf invalidates his tawaf so he starts his tawaf anew. This is incorrect because he can always resolve the doubt by accepting the lesser number and then proceed with the rest of the rounds of tawaf.  Sometimes jama‘at prayers is held in the Sacred Mosque while the pilgrim is doing his tawaf for ‘umrah, and that forces him to interrupt his tawaf and then he joins in the jama‘at. After the prayers, he starts the tawaf from the very beginning thinking that the prayer between the rounds of tawaf invalidated his tawaf.  This is an incorrect notion because the gap in between the rounds of tawaf for sake of joining the jama‘at does not harm the validity of the tawaf. In such a case, he should continue his tawaf from wherever he had stopped for the jama‘at and there is no need for starting it from the beginning.  Some pilgrims think that doing the salat of tawaf “behind the Maqam Ibrahim” means that doing it at a place closest to the Maqam. However, that is not the correct understanding; rather it is sufficient to say the salat at any place which is normally considered to be “behind the Maqam”.
  • 60. Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf  Uttering the intention out loud when wanting to do tawaaf, so you see the pilgrim standing facing the Black Stone when he wants to do tawaaf, saying, “O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf for ‘Umrah” or “O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf for Hajj,” or “O Allaah, I intend to do seven circuits of tawaaf in order to draw closer to You.”  The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did tawaaf before you and he did not speak the intention out loud when he did tawaaf. The Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) did tawaaf before you and did not speak the intention out loud when they did tawaaf, or when doing any other act of worship, so this is a mistake.  Some of those who do tawaaf push and shove too much when they touch the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner, and they are disturbed by the overcrowding and disturb others. They may be pushing and shoving a woman, and the Shaytaan may tempt him and fill his heart with desire when he is crowding this woman in this narrow place. People are only human and may be overwhelmed by their souls that prompt them to do evil, so an evil action may take place in the shadow of the House of Allaah. This is a matter that becomes even worse in light of where it takes place, although it is a fitnah in any place it happens.
  • 61. Misconceptions/ Mistakes in Tawaf  Although preferable, you do not have to have Wudu during Sa’i.  You do not have to climb to the top of Safa or Marwah.  You can take breaks in Sa’i to drink water or rest.  You can take a break after Tawaf, before Sa’i.  You do not have to jog the whole way, from Safa to Marwah. Only within the green lights, the valley of Safa and Marwah.
  • 63. Visiting the Prophet(SAW) Mosque:  Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrates from the Prophet S.A.W that he said: You should not undertake a special journey to visit any place other than the three Mosques: the Sacred Mosque of Makkah, this Mosque of mine, and Al-Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem). [Bukhaari and Muslim].  He also narrates that the Prophet S.A.W said: One prayer in this Mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers offered anywhere else except the Sacred Mosque. [Reported by the group]. And in the narration of Abdullaah ibn az-Zubayr as reported by Ahmad, he S.A.W said: …and a prayer in the Sacred Mosque is better than a hundred prayers in this one.  Therefore, it is sunnah for the pilgrim as well as others to visit the masjid of the Prophet S.A.W either before or after Hajj/Umrah in order to offer salaah (prayers) in it. However, it is not a condition or a part of the Hajj/Umrah; as a matter of fact, visiting the masjid of the Prophet S.A.W has no connection with the Hajj/Umrah itself.
  • 65. Riadhul Jannah  Abu Hurayrah (RA) also narrates that the Prophet S.A.Wsaid: Between my house and my minbar is a garden (raudhah) from the gardens of paradise, and my minbar is on my haudh (cistern). [Bukhari].

Editor's Notes

  1. “One of the main objectives of Hajj is to endorse the lives of Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail for they are the Imams of the monotheistic way. As for the Prophet Muhammad (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam), he was sent to make this way prevalent, a way which Allah described as being “The religion of your father Ibrahim.” But why Ibrahim (ʿalayhi al-Salām)? Why did Allah choose to make one of the five pillars of Islam a re-enactment of his specific footsteps? For despite it being a story that is thousands of years old, Allah chose to eternalise it by linking our Islam and fate in the Hereafter to the copying of him and his family’s tracks. To answer this question, we must first ask: Who was Ibrahim? One day, Abraham woke up and asked his wife Hajar to get her son and prepare for a long journey. In a few days Abraham started out with his wife Hajar and their son Ishmael. The child was still nursing and not yet weaned. Abraham walked through cultivated land, desert, and mountains until he reached the desert of the Arabian Peninsula and came to an uncultivated valley having no fruit, no trees, no food, no water. The valley had no sign of life. After Abraham had helped his wife and child to dismount, he left them with a small amount of food and water which was hardly enough for 2 days. He turned around and walked away. He wife hurried after him asking: "Where are you going Abrahim, leaving us in this barren valley?" Abraham did not answer her, but continued walking. She repeated what she had said, but he remained silent. Finally she understood that he was not acting on his own initiative. she realized that Allah had commanded him to do this. She asked him : "Did Allah command you to do so?“ He replied: "Yes." Then his great wife said: "We are not going to be lost, since Allah Who has commanded you is with us." Abraham invoked Almighty Allah thus:
  2. Allah sends a ram from Paradise for Ibrahim to slaughter instead of Ismail, for the purpose of this onerous test was never about slaughtering Ismail but to slaughter the love and attachment within Ibrahim’s heart which only belongs to Allah. His submission made it clear however that this had been achieved.

The Prophet spread his hand, but I withdrew mine. He said, 'What is wrong 'Amr?' I said, 'I want to make a condition.' 'And what is that?' he said. I said, 'That Allah will forgive me.' Then the Messenger of Allah said, 'Did you not know that Islam wipes out what came before it, and that Hijrah wipes out what came before it and that Hajj wipes out what came before it!" (Sahih Muslim).

  10. Note: Those who live within the Radius of the Miqat can make Ihraam from their homes. People living in Makkah need to go out of the boundaries of Makkah to make Ihram. As nowadays people come by flights from all parts of the world, they need should either get into Ihram before boarding the flight or just before flying over the Miqaat. (There is an announcement made in Saudi Airlines before of approaching the Miqaat).
  11. Concerning the virtue of touching the Yemeni Corner, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Touching the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner indeed erases sins.” (Narrated by Ahmad from Ibn ‘Umar; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 2194).

  14. There is not a single day that the sun has come up on more beloved to Allah than the Day of Arafat. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "There is no day on which Allah frees more of His slaves from Fire than the Day of Arafat, and He verily draws near, then boasts of them before the angles, saying: 'What do they seek?'" (Sahih Muslim). And in another Hadith: "Verily Allah boasts of the people of Arafat before the people of Heaven (angels) saying: 'Look to my servants who have come to Me disheveled and dusty.'"

  16. You will find in many of the Hadith regarding the virtue of Hajj the term Hajj Mabrur. Do you know what Mabrur means? It means an accepted Hajj. A Mabrur Hajj is one in which Allah is not disobeyed during or after. Others have said that a Hajj Mabrur is one that is accepted, and the sign of its acceptance is that a person will go back in a better state then when he came, and that he will discontinue the sins that were between him and Allah.
