Question 3
1. What kind of media
institution might distribute
your media product and
why?
By Molly Chapman
2. Media Institution
• A media institution is a company that owns numerous
companies involved in mass media enterprises where
media products are created & distributed for audience
consumption.
3. Importance of Distributors
• Distributors are important because there has been a rise
in digital publications over the past few years and new
types of audiences prefer to access independent music
publications through the internet rather than buying
physical copies.
• Therefore, the printed music press industries have to rely
on media institutions to distribute their product to ensure
that it reaches a mass market.
4. TimeInc
• TimeInc is one of the UKs leading digital and magazine publishers; it engages
with almost half of all UK adults in print and is critically successful. Its award
winning websites reach over 28 million global users each month.
• Using this company to distribute my magazine would be effective because 2/3s
of UK women and 40% of men engage with at least one of over 60 publications
meaning that a large audience could possibly consume it. TimeIncUK currently
publishes ‘NME’ and ‘Uncut’ which are popular indie magazines for a
mainstream but also niche audience. They would be good to use, as they are
already a trusted company.
5. Bauer Media
• Another company is Bauer Media. They are Europe’s largest privately
owned media group, which operates in 19 countries including the UK,
Germany, Australia and USA. In the UK this institution reaches over 25
million consumers.
• They revolve around engaging and connecting with their audiences
through compelling content at any time or place. Bauer Media has a
strong online presence too as well as TV and radio stations. It
distributes magazines such as ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘Q’.
6. FuturePLC
• FuturePlc is a UK company, which has acquired a portfolio of over 200 print
titles, apps, websites and events. Therefore, they are likely to attract and reach
a mass UK market. This institution is more for niche audiences for example;
existing magazines that they distribute are ‘Guitar’ and ‘Rhythm’. However, as
they do attract a niche audience I do not feel as though this company would be
the best option for my magazine as the main aim is to reach a large audience,
which I think would happen with other institutions such as IPC Media.
7. Conclusion
• In conclusion, I feel as though the strongest institution to distribute
‘my magazine ‘Diverge’ is IPC Media as they are already a trusted
company which a wide platform of consumers and links to other
successful companies. Their critical and commercial success is an
important factor for my decision.
• Also, I expect their to be a strong online and digital presence for
example an app where readers can consume the product and a way
to access the content easily on mobile phones, tablets etc.
