Anorexia is a serious
psychological eating
disorder with “starvation
symptoms”.

Sufferers develop an
intense fear of becoming
overweight, even if they are
severely underweight.

Often, their perception of
their body weight or
shape is highly
distorted, and the
Anorexia sufferer will
often seem in complete
denial of the implications
of their low body weight.

It’s not uncommon for
women and girls
suffering from anorexia
to stop having their
periods.

Anorexia is a very serious
condition and the death
rate is five times more
for sufferers compared
to others of the same
age.

Anorexia nervosa is the
third-most common
chronic adolescent
problem, and the
psychiatric condition that
causes the most number of
deaths.

Anorexia sufferers really do go
through quite a “hellish”
ordeal, which is often almost as
traumatic for the loved one’s of
the sufferer, who feel virtually
completely helpless to help or
save the sufferer, from an
obsessive and destructive
behaviour, gone mad or out of
control.

Most cases of Anorexia arise as a
result of either a single or
series of very upsetting
experiences, that often connect
to body image, which when
compounded with mitigating
environment factors leads the
sufferer to feel very “out of
control”.

As a coping mechanism, it’s as
though the unconscious mind
responds by creating a “part”
or aspect of the person that
attempts to regain a feeling
of control, via weight loss.

This “part” as I call it,
views weight loss as
highly desirable.

Please understand that
this newly formed “part”
that I’ll call ED (Eating
Disorder) is driven by
emotion and not logic, is
incapable of seeing the
bigger picture implications
of the behaviour,

and operates very much
like an implanted
software programme
that knows only one
thing, and is very single
minded and driven
towards it’s objective.

Often loved ones and
therapists alike, who attempt
to assist the Anorexia
sufferer via very direct
interventions and taking over
with “force feeding” and the
like.

While it is definitely true
that such direct
interventions can be very
necessary, even life saving in
the short term, the ultimate
goal of any therapy will
ideally aim to change the
behaviour from the “inside
out” so to speak.

In other words, enable the
Anorexia sufferer to gain a
foothold in regaining
control of their thoughts,
feelings, values,
relationships, sense of
Identity and behaviours.

Such therapy, if it is to have a
real shot at achieving these
changes, needs to address
the level of mind that
is, where the original
difficulty originates.

That level of the mind, is
known as the subconscious
mind. The therapies of
Hypnotherapy, NLP and EFT
all provide an access to, and
an ability to influence the
subconscious mind.

As such, they often prove to
be the most effective
modalities in assisting an
Anorexia sufferer to make a
full and self
generating, recovery.
