1. PROJECT FOCUS
Modular Feature Stair
LOCATION
Bethesda MD, USA
OVERVIEW
Commissioned for a prestigious private equity company headquarters in Besthesda
Maryland, Synergi Global worked with world renowned architect Dennis Austin of
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to successfully design, manufacture and install this
complete floating modular feature stair.
DESCRIPTION
An incredibly eye-catching yet fully functional stair that connects three floors of an
existing office building. The striking design with its combination of glass, stainless steel
and high gloss paint finish, creates a central sculptural element, while allowing the free
flow of light – and of course easy access between the office areas.
CHALLENGES
In addition to the creative design, engineering expertise and specialist manufacturing
capability required, an additional key challenge for this project was the requirement to
install the staircase in a fully occupied space. This had to be included in the whole
design process and required extra safety with total observance of health and safety
regulation, minimum disruption to the tenants, and of course strict adherence to the
project timeline.
THE RESULTS
Winner of a WBC STAR Award, the outcome is a fully modular stair system which
required no field welding whatsoever, enabling a safe and seamless installation in the
occupied space. Synergi was able to meet the project deliverables within budget and
with exceptional workmanship.
HIGHLIGHTS:
1. Creative combination of finishes and materials, including glass, stainless steel and
high-gloss paintwork, carefully lit with display lighting.
2. Custom fabricated fluorescent automotive paint finish.
3. Glass treads and landings supported on inset stainless steel between stringers plates.
4. Curved central landing features supported by suspended harness system of rods
and spars. The ‘floating’ balustrades for the stair and adjacent balconies are a glass
panel point-supported system, attached to outrigger arms to further accentuate the
floating impression.
5. Exposed fittings and stainless steel components show the incredible attention to
detail and immaculate finish, creating a functional beauty when viewed from both
near and far.
