CONTRIBUTION OF SOCIAL-
ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANISATIONS IN
SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
CONTRIBUTIONS OF SAHABAT ALAM MALAYSIA (SAM) IN SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE
TOURISM.
 Forests & Biodiversity
- Our work reflects the position that justice, transparency and accountability are
crucial elements in the sustainable management of our forests.
- We also work to ensure that the various weaknesses found within state, national
and international policies and laws on forests and land are constantly improved.
- SAM office in Marudi, Sarawak works directly with the indigenous communities on
the ground, organising various advocacy activities for the communities as well as
providing them with the necessary community mobilisation, territorial mapping
and legal support, among others.
 Wildlife
- Protect of wildlife, native wildlife and its habitat on which they depend
- Encourage, promote and enforce the laws governing the conservation of nature
- Raising public awareness on our stand against exploitation of animals from
circuses to zoos, from animal testing to fur and leather, from poaching to
endangered species, from farm animals to companion animals to wild animals, we
seek only to improve conditions in which animals are still exploited, tortured and
killed for human benefit.
- Inspiring people to value the importance of sharing this earth with the flora and
fauna
- Work with government bodies and try to assist in policy decisions about wild
animal welfare.
 Food Sovereignty
- Empowering rural communities and urban consumers to employ ecologically
sound and sustainable methods in food production and consumption.
- SAM has a training centre in Marudi where hold trainings for indigenous
communities on agro ecology.
- Engage and support communities in employing traditional and natural farming
methods in their farms.
- Encourage the use of chemical free fertilisers for their crops and the collection of
wild native seeds for the purpose of preserving them for future use.
 Environmental Degradation
- The greatest challenge facing the Government is to effectively plan and
implement existing policies and strategies.
- SAM believes that a balance between environment and development must be
struck and we try to ensure this from time to time when we expose the
wrongdoers and take them to task
 Marine & Coast
- Hence, in an effort to fulfil the protein needs of society and to ensure that the
national fisheries industry expands with sustainability of the marine resource in
mind.
- This is a worrying trend for SAM as they hugely impact the fishery resources
directly.
- SAM feels that there is a need for all quarters to work together to find a sensible
solution so that the fishery resources would be managed sustainably.
 Climate Justice & Energy
- SAM works at various levels on the issue of climate change viz at local, national,
regional and international level.
- Engage with local communities including fisher folk, indigenous peoples and
farmers whose ecosystems, biodiversity and agriculture systems are impacted by
climate change.
- Work with these local communities who contribute to both mitigation and
adaptation solutions in responding to climate change.
- A larger part of SAM work relates to lobbying for better climate policies
- Advocate for positive solutions and struggle against those which are false such as
big dams, nuclear energy and incinerators.
- At the international level, SAM engage with allies and movements to advance
actions that support an international climate regime that is fair, equitable and
environmentally sound.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF MALAYSIAN NATURE SOCIETY (MNS) IN SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE
TOURISM.
 Conservation
- The Conservation division within MNS sees to the effective management of existing
protected areas as well as to establish new protected areas.
- The focal areas in which MNS Conservation initiatives work are Habitats and Sites,
Species, People & Policy
 Education
- To inculcate the love of nature in students and empower future generations to act
in the protection of our natural legacy.
- MNS’ Education division work to establish a network of MNS Environmental
Education Centres (EECs) which will act as focal areas for MNS educational
programmes and activities.
- These EECs are typically linked to globally-important areas such as World Heritage
Sites, Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and Ramsar sites.
- The Education initiatives aim to promote environmental education and global
conservation through its EECs as well as through its School Nature Clubs (Kelab
Pencinta Alam/KPA) to local school teachers and the Malaysian Ministry of
Education.
 Park & Centres
- MNS has established a number of nature education and field study centres at
representative ecosystems.
- At these centres, various programmes and activities such as jungle-trekking and
flora and fauna study are conducted so as to give the public better insight into the
ecosystems surrounding them.
- MNS' parks and nature centres are Kuala Selangor Nature Park (KSNP), Nature
Education Centre (NECs), Rimba Ilmu, Dark Caves, ecoCare Centre, Environmental
Interpretive Centre (EIC), BOH-MNS Field Study Centre, Vale Eco Centre & Urban
Environmental Education Hub
 Publications
- Documenting facts and support efforts of research and findings to be transformed
into valuable publications such as into magazine and bulletin
- Support other publications that promote Malaysia's natural heritage and will be
useful as an education tool to promote Malaysia's environmental treasures.
 Projects
- Conduct a variety of projects such as conservation programme, rehabilitation
project, love the earth project, preserve nature, green bag campaign and many
more

CONTRIBUTIONS OF UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL
ORGANIZATION (UNESCO) IN SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM.
 UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of
poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the
sciences, culture, communication and information.
 Under the UNESCO there is The UNESCO World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism
Programme represents a new approach based on dialogue and stakeholder
cooperation where planning for tourism and heritage management is integrated at a
destination level, the natural and cultural assets are valued and protected, and
appropriate tourism developed.
 The Programme will create an international framework for cooperation and
coordinated achievement across sectors, from strategic planning to destination
management, in order to safeguard heritage, and achieve sustainable tourism and
economic development.
 Facilitate the management and development of sustainable tourism at World Heritage
properties through fostering increased awareness, capacity and balanced participation
of all stakeholders in order to protect the properties and their Outstanding Universal
Value whilst ensuring that tourism delivers benefits for conservation of the properties’
sustainable development for local communities as well as a quality experience for
visitors.
 Strengthen the enabling environment by advocating policies, strategies, frameworks
and tools that support sustainable tourism as an important vehicle for protecting and
managing cultural and natural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value.
 Promote broad stakeholder engagement in the planning, development and
management of sustainable tourism that follows a destination approach to heritage
conservation and focuses on empowering local communities.
 Provide UNESCO World Heritage Sustainable Tourism Toolkit as guides for World
Heritage Site managers and other key stakeholders will enable a growing number of
