2. Introduction
• New York native Nancy L. Kourland is a staunch
supporter of Central Park Conservancy. Now in its 35th
year, Central Park Conservancy is able to maintain the
beauty of the country's most frequently visited urban
park because of the support of organizations,
corporations, and individuals like Nancy L. Kourland.
Over 42 million people visit Central Park's sprawling
843-acre landscape each year. Throughout the park's
history, that landscape has experienced periods of
decline and restoration, and one of the park's extended
periods of decline during the 1960s and 1970s led to the
inception of Central Park Conservancy.
3. Central Park Conservancy
• Initially formed by a group of concerned New
Yorkers, the group has grown to become a central
figure in the park's maintenance, contributing as
much as 75 percent of the park's annual budget. To
date, the organization has contributed more than
$800 million toward the park's upkeep in the areas
of monument conservation, graffiti removal, and
drainage system maintenance.
