- 2010On April 20, BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and commencing months of oil leaking unrestrained into the ocean. Efforts to manage the spill with controlled burning, dispersants and plugging the leak were unsuccessful until BP capped the well in mid-July, temporarily halting the flow of oil into the Gulf. The well was then successfully plugged and declared "effectively dead" on September 19.This oil spill has obtained the dubious distinction of being the worst oil spill in US history, surpassing the damage done by the Exxon Valdez tanker that spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the ecologically sensitive Prince William Sound in 1989. We all remember when he met behind closed doors with the industry –ES: Yeah.MP: This is one of the things that came out of there. So they did all this –ES: I, I, I mean, I’m taken by all of this. So they did all of this to save 500 grand, or was this just a wealth of paperwork and a paper trail and safety precautions that they just didn’t want to mess with? What is it?MP: When this story is told, it’s going to look just like the other deregulatory stories, where during the Bush years they deregulated this industry just like they did with the drug industry, just like they did all parts of the environment, the – if you look at it, it’s all a deregulatory problem.
