21. Can you make money from daily news podcasts?
‘There has been so much demand for sponsorship that it more
than pays for itself’
Tom Standage, The Economist (The Intelligence)
‘We are doing probably the best Danish podcast out there but
none of the traditional advertisers have really been
interested’
Troels Behrendt Jørgensen, Politiken
But small markets may be different …
23. Other motivations for daily news podcasts
‘We are thrilled to have 25 minutes a day with people that we didn't have before. We
really think of The Daily as the new Front Page.’
Erik Borenstein, The New York Times
2. Attracting younger audiences
‘We would be foolish if we weren't pushing aggressively into the on demand space.
The audience is about 20 years younger than the broadcast audience.’
Chris Turpin, National Public Radio (NPR)

Broadcasters also looking to control the experience
“We have an existential issue with a
unlevel playing field on third and
dominant third-party platforms that are
seeking to preference and push their
own services”
Kieran Clifton, Director of Distribution and
Business Development, BBC

30. Takeaways
Podcasting moving out of cottage industry phase into a more ‘professionalised’ state:
New money, more competition, a growing audience demand
News and politics is a major driver of usage
Podcasts: an increasingly important revenue line profitable in their own right but with
added benefits of generating loyalty/habit and attracting younger audiences
Outside the US: smaller audiences and less revenue
Platforms are moving in. This will grow audience beyond ‘latte drinking’
demographics but dangers for publishers in terms of discovery and direct links with
audience.

Editor's Notes
I should also say (as I do every year) that as this is an online poll – so it is representative of those who are online but not of national populations. As such it will tend to underrepresent traditional news behaviour such as TV, print and radio when we talk about cross platform behaviour. Polling conducted by YouGov on our behalf – and we used robust samples of around 2000 in each country including the UK
We are grateful to wide range of sponsors ranging from the Thomson Reuters Foundation who are the core sponsor of the Reuters Institute to the 14 organisations that support this particular report – and as well as Edelman they include Google, BBC, Ofcom, 2 other media regulators, industry organisations and a number of universities around the world
Moving on to the business issues and in terms of paying for news we are seeing more people subscribing or donating to news organisaitons
