2. LOOKING BACK AT MY TREATMENT
When giving my presentation for my
treatment this is what I saw my demographic
to be:
I think a suitable rating for this movie would
be a 15. My target audience would be both
males and females however this genre may
appeal to females because it is a romantic film.
It also may appeal to an older audience
because of the maturity – the fact that it
involves cancer and people being in love.
3. AGE RESTRICTION OF 15
However, after some consideration I think
that my demographic would be much
smaller than this for a number of reasons.
Firstly, when looking for a target audience
you have to consider who would be most
interested in your film. So for me I would
agree with myself and say that may be the
suitable rating for this movie would be 15
because even though it is a romance film it
does exhibit a homosexual relationship and
some parents with younger children may not
be ok with them watching it.
After getting some feedback from my
audience of 40 I feel confident that an age
rating of 15 is suitable:
4. ANALYSING MY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
I looked through the feedback and all the
responses on a survey so the results were
much easier to see. I used survey monkey
to do this.
In total 13/39 people said that they would
class this movie opening for teenagers and
12/39 said that it would be suitable for 15
year olds and over. That means that 25/39
of my responses agree with me in saying
that this movie opening should be classed
at the 15 mark as over half agreed with me.
5. FEMALES RATHER THAN MALES…
However, after getting back some feedback from an audience of 40 that watched my
movie trailer I would say that my movie is more angled at females rather than males.
After speaking to my brothers that are of the ages of 13 and 15 the reason became
more clear. A key thing to think about when pondering who would be your target
market is the type of people that could relate to your opening.
Yes, sadly it is true that everyone can relate to cancer or loss in one way or another.
However, not everyone can relate to being a girl and the rollercoaster of emotions
that that brings. A teenage boy cannot relate to a girl, merely because they are a
teenage boy. This indicates that teenage boys would not be my target market
because they cannot relate to the main characters and are likely to switch off because
the movie is of no interest to them.
Similarly, a man could not in anyway relate to the troubles that a girl would be facing
because he never was one.
No matter how good a film is it is unlikely to be for everyone.
6. TEENAGE GIRLS RATHER THAN ALL FEMALES…
Furthermore, I rethought my idea that all females would watch my film
opening because not all females have an interest in the dramas of
teenage life. Yes, a women of the age of 40 would have once been a
teenage girl and so can relate to the struggles of a teenage girl’s life on
top of the fact that she has cancer. However, they are more likely to
watch a film about someone their own age as they can relate to them on
a much higher level.
Therefore, it is unlikely that these people would be my target audience
no matter how ‘mature’ the film is.
7. A TEENAGE GIRL
However, a teenage girl would be the preferable demographic
because they would be able to relate to the girls in my movie.
However, again not all teenage girls like the same things.
Someone that would fit my demographic would be: a person that
likes romance films, can relate to the main character whether it be
through loss or the age of the girls and someone that does not
mind seeing death being a prominent feature in a film.
However, it is obvious that films like mine do have a demographic
because ‘Fault in Our Stars’ was such a successful film and had the
same traits as my opening. The demographic for them was girls,
and boys actually, that wanted to see love and did not mind
seeing pain.
I believe that it is real to life, people come and ago from your life
and that movie was not afraid to show that life is not always
positive. I think it was a good message to teenagers and the fact
that the actors were young helped portray the message, much like
how I wanted to in my opening. Therefore, I would conclude that
my audience would be that of the same of the film the ‘Fault in
Our Stars’.
8. AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM MY SHOWING
Here is the review of my audience feedback after they watched my movie opening:

were less likely to watch the movie. This
helped me indicate who would be my
target audience.
