The document summarizes a presentation on a cordon line survey. A cordon line survey studies travel patterns within an area bounded by an imaginary boundary line. The area inside the cordon line is studied extensively, looking at land use, economic activities, and travel characteristics. Travel patterns from and to areas outside the cordon line are also examined at a macro level. Key terms related to cordon line surveys include external cordon line, study area, internal and external trips, screen lines, and zones. Factors like existing and planned development, symmetric daily life patterns, safe survey locations, and compatibility with previous studies should be considered when selecting a cordon line.

2. Cordon Line Survey.
The imaginary line representing the
boundary of study area is termed as
Cordon Line and the survey done
inside the area covered by cordon line
to study travel pattern to large extent
is known as Cordon Line Survey.
The land use pattern and economic
activities are studied intensively and
detailed surveys are conducted in this
area to determine travel
characteristics.
3. The area inside cordon line is studied
extensively whereas the area outside
cordon line is studied in a lesser
degree of detail.

4. The travel pattern from and to the
areas outside are also studied at a
macro level as external trips which will
add to locally generated trips.
The study area covered should be
such that they are built up and are
likely to grow along the city which
forms the core area, and the people
living within have some dependency
towards the city area and commute
often in that direction.
5. Terms related with Cordon Line
Survey.
External Cordon Line :- it is an
imaginary line representing the
boundary of study area.
Study area :- The area covered for
purpose of data collection and
planning.
Trips.
◦ Internal to External.
◦ Internal to Internal.
◦ External to Internal.
◦ External to External.
6. Screen Line – It is an imaginary line
splitting the area within external
cordon into two parts. Ex:- natural or
physical barriers like Rivers, Canals,
Railway Lines, etc.
Zones – The area under study within
cordon line for purpose of data
collection and aggregation.
7. The selection of Cordon Line should
be done by keeping following factors
in mind.
1. The external cordon line should
circumscribe all areas which are already
built up and those areas which are
considered likely to be developed during
the period of study.
2. The external cordon line should be
continuous and uniform in its course so
that movement cross it only once.
3. The external cordon line should contain all
areas of symmetric daily life of people
oriented towards the city centre.
8. 4. The external cordon line should intersects
roads where it is safe and convenient to
carry out traffic surveys.
5. The external cordon line should be
compatible with that of previous such
study.
