Colonisation had a severe impact on the Indian traders and merchants. Indian markets were fully captured by the British and heavy taxes were imposed on the export of Indian products in the outside market. In this way the market for Indian goods were losing popularity and Indian traders and merchants faced heavy losses.

8. ο Adivasi Revolts:
ο Adivasi Farmers who lived in the jungle
became worse in British times.
ο Baiga, Muria, Gond and Bhil tribes of Madhya
Pradesh and Chattisgarh
ο The Koya, Reddy and Kolam tribes of
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
ο The Saora adivasis of Orissa were no longer
able to practice their old forms of Cultivation.
ο Britishers forced to become Labourers for the
Forest Department or Bonded Labourers.
ο They ill-treated women, took bribes, got
begar (free labour) done by people
ο The Adivasis started Protesting against such
atrocities in many places.
9. ο The Santhal Revolt(1855-1856)
ο Huge Revolt
ο Santhals started looting and killing the
zamindars and moneylenders.
ο Santhals declared the British rule come to
an end.
ο But they were armed only with bows and
arrows were not strong to stand against
British army.
ο By the end of a fierce battle, 15000
Santhals were killed and their revolt was
finally suppressed
10. ο The Revolt Led by Birsa Munda(1874-1901)
ο Young man named Birsa from Munda
Adivasis.
ο They wanted to get rid of the British
Government that protected the
zamindars, the moneylenders and the
courts of law that had deprived their
rights over their forests.
ο Finally Birsa was arrested and put them
behind bars.
ο Birsa Munda died in Prison in 1900.
ο Govt was forced to make law to protect
the rights of the Adivasis of Cchotanagpur.
11. ο Forest revolt in Kumaon (1921-22)
ο Peasants started protesting against Govt.
ο Because their rights over the forest were
being taken away.
ο They openly broke the rules of the Forest
Department.
ο They burn the jungles used by
contractors.
ο Refused to do forced labour.
ο British Govt had to change its policies.
ο Outsiders can not purchase the land of
the Adivasis
