ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR
           GROWING YOUR AUDIENCE
           AND INCREASING USAGE
ALA Midwinter Meeting 2013
AGENDA
• Readers are the key to success
• Challenges facing libraries
• Tools for growing your audience and
 increasing usage
 • High-quality reading recommendations (NoveList Plus)
 • Rich information in your catalog (NoveList Select)
 • Effective communication with your community
  (LibraryAware/NextReads)
Readers matter more than anything
Book delivery vs. Book discovery
Where does the library fit in?
Three Key Questions
 1. Who is your library reader? What do
    they want?
 2. How do you respond to the shift from
    physical to virtual usage?
 3. What can you do to attract and hold
    the attention of your patrons?

  5. Let’s look at NoveList Select.
  6. From an OCLC report: more people are aware that their library has a coffee shop than that the library has online databases. What can libraries do to increase awareness of library services?
  7. From Library Journal’s Patron Profiles chart – Figure 16 – all the action is in the catalog. What can you do to put more information in your catalog?
  8. A typical catalog tells readers whether or not your library has the item requested. But what happens when the item is not available? Do you offer the reader any other options?
  9. The catalog is the library’s most frequently used resource. Is it delivering what library users really want?In a study of online catalog users by the Evansville Public Library, IN:78% of customers requested Similar Titles Recommendations.72% of customers said that having Series Information available was important to them.
  10. Catalog enrichment makes your bibliographic records better by adding richer supplemental content. Information is delivered to people as they use the catalog – a very visible location that is highly effective. Select allows libraries to recommend books, events, newsletters and more – all based on the user’s interests.
  11. Let’s look at reasons why catalog enrichment makes a difference in libraries.
  12. The catalog is the library’s most frequently used resource. 13. Catalog use is changing -- more and more usage is remote. More people are using the library from home, school, wherever. How do these readers discover the depth and breadth of your collection? Charlotte Mecklenburg reports 82% of holds are remote. In Williamsburg Regional Library, VA the number is 89%.Many libraries don’t know the answer to this question but most agree—it’s a lot!
  14. Is your catalog a place where readers can learn about books and resources they didn’t already know about? Or is a place where readers come to place on books they’ve learned about from others? This is the difference between book delivery and book discovery. Why is it so important? OCLC’s From Awareness to Funding—a study of library user voting behavior—found that library user who viewed the library as place that introduced them to new authors and titles and resources were more likely to vote for increased library funding.
