The situation is hopeless, but not serious!
Hundreds of SDOs talk nice… but none listen!
We Must All Hang Together, or Most Assuredly,
We Will All Hang Separately!

Don’t panic: we are in the same situation as 1840,
standardising screw threads. Civilization survived.
Don’t panic: You (cities) are the “buyers” and you CAN
set the priorities and evaluate merits of various standards!
Don’t panic: Standards change unpredictable risk into
manageable risk … If dozens of cities have implemented
some standardised systems, you can know what to expect.

DO: step by step, work on interoperability
DO: continue pooling expertise, crowdsourcing,
aim for control of Acceptance Testing
DO: Compare, set KPIs, organize certification,
do interops and bakeoffs, aim for replicability

Mindmap of Standardisation Organisations for SF-SSCC

• Interactive “drill down” display of topics possible in mindmap
• Topics chosen by SF-SSCC, based on WHO, UN SDGs, SDOs
• The mindmap is generated from a excel file of Alliances
and SDO WGs, with topics. Can also be exported to Word
• Over 600 groups are listed, so far, with URLs, titles and scope of their work
• Topics/categories of SDOs can be (re)assigned by any user, under CC4.0
license
• Specifications listed in separate part of excel file, creating a 2nd mindmap

Smart Cities … don’t panic, crowdsource !
Think of Wikipedia
Think of LINUX Foundation and ECLIPSE
Look at IEEE expert groups
Look at OASC Academy
Watch for EC CSA projects promoting / coordinating experts
GOAL: Create a mix & match menu of standards/solutions
NEEDED: Enthusiasts with expertise in managing
large volunteer projects and/or MOOC training platforms,
with a desire to help the world transform.

Smart Cities … when you crowd in, agree Ontologies too!
Libraries of thousands of overlapping vocabularies/ontologies exist:
ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries
FAIRsharing.org
Project Open Data
Open Metadata Registry
BARTOC Basel Register of Ontologies
Biomedical Ontologies
…
Matching up ontologies is MUCH harder than (re)using same ones !
