2. USES OF SPINACH.
• Spinach has a(hypoglycaemic- which means low blood sugar) the effect that
can be used in treating urinary calculi and lung inflammation.
• The seeds of spinach can be used as a laxative and for treating breathing
difficulties and liver inflammation.
3. HOW TO CONTROL PEST AND DISEASES FROM THE
SPINACH PLANTS IN MALAYSIA.
• Leafminer and aphids are the most frequent pests that attack spinach crop.
However it can be Control- led by destroying infected crop residue and
weeds. And also use registered chemicals like pesticides. Another way to
control pest and disease from affecting the spinach is by crop rotation and
spraying with registered insecticide and fungicide. Diseases that can affects
spinach include yellow rot, spinach blight the disease can be controlled by
treating the seeds with a registered chemical immediately before planting
spinach crop.
4. CLIMATE AND SOIL REQUIREMENTS FOR
SPINACH IN MALAYSIA.
• Spinach seeds germinate at 2 °C to 30 °C. However, 7 °C to 24 °C is the
optimum temperature. The plant requires a constant and uniform supply of
water in order to obtain a good crop of high quality. Seeds will not germinate
well in warm weather. During spinach production, the soil should never be
allowed to dry out. Moreover Spinach requires plenty of water, although the
soil should have good drainage. Spinach grows well on a variety of soils,
although fertile, sandy loams with a high organic matter content are preferred.
however heavier soils can be quite productive if these are well drained and
irrigated with care. To grow spinach you need optimum soil PH of 6.5 to 7.
5. HOW TO PLANT SPINACH.
• Spinach is propagated by seed that is found inside the fruit as a result of
fertilisation. The soil will have to be ploughed to a depth of at least 20 cm and
then harrowed. Slight variations in planting date may exist because of the
micro and macroclimate variation and taking into account the rainfall patterns
and variation in this country. Harrowing should be done very thoroughly for
the land to be flat, especially on irrigated land, so that the water can flow
evenly. Spinach should be planted in the rainy season.
