The Initiative
Big Data Analytics (BDA) is rapidly turning out to be a significant global enterprise need. It aims to facilitate
the storage, querying and analysis of enterprise big data, which is getting more complicated and time-
consuming with traditional database technologies. Apache Hadoop is a well-known Open-source BDA
enterprise solution which is seeing an annual application growth rate of 60% globally.
With the rise of Apache Hadoop, a next-generation enterprise data architecture is emerging that allows
organizations to efficiently rein in their big data business transactions. Hadoop is uniquely capable of storing,
aggregating, querying and analyzing big data sources into formats that fuel new business insights.
Organizations that embrace solution architectures focused on maximizing data-driven insights will put
themselves in a position to drive more business, enhance productivity, maintain competitive edge or discover
new and lucrative business opportunities. Over the coming years, Hadoop could be in a position to process
more than half the world’s data.

To educate organizations in the region about the significance of Data Insights and how best to leverage Apache
Hadoop and its surrounding technologies as a key component of their enterprise data architecture, Innovative
Management is initiating a 1st of its kind project in the region which is aimed to create an overarching platform to
share global best practices and used cases from the top experts of the world by organizing large scale events of
international repute supported with back to back training and development services to promote Big Data Analytics,
Data Driven Insights and its surrounding Technologies based on Hadoop ecosystem - A way forward for businesses and
industries globally.

Open-BDA Hadoop Summit 2014 – Hadoop in Enterprise Architecture
 In November 2014, Innovative Management Services, makes Pakistan history, pioneering the launch of an
international event to educate organizations in the region about the significance of Data Insights and how best to
leverage Apache Hadoop and its surrounding technologies as a key component of their enterprise data architecture.

 1st Open-BDA Hadoop Summit 2014, organized by Innovative Management Services (www.innovative-
management.org) was held in Karachi, Pakistan on 18th & 19th November 2014.
 The Program included a Breakfast Session with a theme “Big Data Pakistan” on 18th November at Marriott Hotel
Ambassador Hall, Karachi.
 Theme for the Summit was “Hadoop in Enterprise Architecture” held on 18th November at Marriott Hotel
Marquee, Karachi.
 As part of the Summit Program, three focused sessions on Business Value with Big Data & Hadoop, Data Driven
Business & Hadoop Deployment & Operations were also lined up.
A Hands-on Training Session was held in conjunction with the Summit to acquire preliminary and state-of-the-art
knowledge about the Big Data & Hadoop Ecosystem on 19th November at Microsoft Innovation Center, Karachi.

 In the summit, leading experts of Apache Hadoop & Big Data from around the globe shared best practices of
Hadoop & Big Data in the Business Ecosystem while offering business perspective to the CIOs, IT Heads, BI Heads,
Developers, Architects, Administrators, Data Analysts, Data Scientists and the Vendor Community.
 IOBM & Fast-NU were the Knowledge Partners for the event while Board of Investment Pakistan, P@SHA, PSEB,
Networkers Society of Pakistan and Pakistan Information Security Association were the Supporters.
 Mrs. Nasreen Ali, Director General, Board of Investment, Karachi was the Chief Guest for the Summit while Mr.

Session.
 1st Open-BDA Hadoop Summit 2014 was attended by 109 delegates including representing 62 companies from
various sectors of Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Tariq Mahmood
Data Scientist & Trainer
Dr. Tariq Mahmood is the Chief Data Scientist for Big Data with NexDegree
Pvt. Ltd., Data Scientist and Trainer with Innovative Management Services,
both based in Karachi, Pakistan. He is also an Associate Professor at the
Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology (KIET). He has around 10
years of professional and research experience in the domains of Business
Intelligence, Data Warehousing, Data Mining and Advanced Analytics. He
also has 6 years of professional and consultancy experience in Big Data
Analytics, particularly using Open-Source technologies like the Apache
Hadoop platform and NoSQL databases. Notably, Dr. Tariq has designed Big
Data Infrastructures for the Healthcare, Telecommunication and Financial
sector in Pakistan. He has conducted numerous training and workshops on
Big Data, both for Government and Private Organizations, notably the one

He also heads the Big Data Research Group at KIET www.sites.google.com/site/bigdatabolt/BDAResearch with a multi-

Mr. Babu Mandadi
Trainer (India) Mr. Babu Mandadi is a skilled, experienced and much sought after Certified
Hadoop Trainer and Consultant.
He conducts regular workshops for corporate clients on Hadoop Ecosystem
and Big Data Technologies helping them build in-house competencies. His
clients include start-ups as well as multi-national companies based in India
& US. He has overall 7+ Years of Experience in the Training Domain. He has
managed the entire training functions for the corporate sectors including
Content development, and Material preparation. Trained by more than
1000+professionals.
Mr. Babu Mandadi is also an entrepreneur and is in the process of setting up
his own Big Data Analytics company.
He comes from a core technical background and has extensive experience in architecting enterprise class solutions on
various technology platforms in complex domains and served as a consultant for implementation of Project
Management tools and best practices. His vast experience in product development, project management and IT
operations has helped him in key positions with well known IT companies, such as Infosys, Wipro, NGRIT and Landmark
(Tata group).

The Big Data deluge has lead to the adoption of Big Data Analytics (BDA) for extracting valuable business
information from dynamic big data streams. BDA, although quite complicated, is seeing a rapid pace of
adoption primarily due to the BDA platform called Hadoop, which is an Apache project based on Google’s
MapReduce data distribution framework. However, Hadoop application technologies are complex and the
Hadoop programming and installation expertise is still relatively rare. In fact, Hadoop is a subset of the well-
known NOSQL movement, which itself contains novel open-source technologies to store and manage big data.
NOSQL databases are in their infancy and much help is generally needed to harness their power of reining big
data.
Primary focus of Open-BDA is to create an over arching platform to promote an Ecosystem for Data Driven
Business in the region, bringing state-of-the-art knowledge, used cases and best practices to help
organizations survey, sustain and succeed the business paradigm in this data driven world.
Through training and development services, this platform will also serve as a regional thought leader to grab
and carve out new roles and jobs that plug into data analysis capabilities by formulating alliances with local
and international stakeholders of IT Industry, associations and governing bodies and managing Hadoop & Big
Data resources in Pakistan. It will also encourage leading Hadoop & Big Data solution providers and startups in
the region to explore unlimited opportunities ahead.
