This talk is about the city as a single organism.
I'm the technology manager of an experimental micro-city called Arcosanti. It's a one-of-a-kind "urban laboratory" in the desert in Arizona. It's size, isolated location, founding philosophy, and commons infrastructure make it a perfect case-study to undersand the shifts that happen when the sharing economy reaches 80%+ of a population.
We'll talk on how centralized "sharing economy" and social technologies can develop the city into a conscious being. What are the impliations for our life and work when we see the city as an extension of ourselves? Come find out!

• Path to Build the City
1 year ago - Tech entrepreneur from NYC area; sharing economy product built resource hubs.
Looking for place to do user testing … thought I knew about cities - turns out I was wrong
Arcosanti - self described urban laboratory in desert.
How shall we live…50% in cities
I integrated and became manager of the tech dept…
Began to see more implications of this unique testing case…
Unique and special place - lessons learned over 45 years implementing sharing economy principles.
isolated architectural marvel built by 7k volunteers. ; 40k visitors / year
Maximize enjoyment of live / work / play
food, socialization + nature, free entertainment provided
70% in commons, art/craft/education/recreation spaces, etc.
arcology - architecture +Ecology
carless +
Frugal personal spaces
Daily Face to Face Meetings
community governing body
Awareness of “why”
what is the state after a 45 year urban laboratory experiment? Built by 7000 people…. seems to have everything…. but if growth is the goal, a fundamental part of the equation is wrong…
going from “living architecture” to making the city come alive on a new collective dimension… that involves everyone.
is it possible?
Once our basic needs as people are met…
Next came the building of the commons, followed by the transcendent exploration of identity where no one is “other”.
Connecting N/R happens once the intention of people coming together becomes win/win… then people desire greater autonomy once they identify they have many options to source their needs through the edges of their shared network.
Finally, there is a level of synergistic exchange, where needs are expressed w/o the use of the normal sense organs. You're able to make needs known without even having to say them… just by looking at someone they can feel exactly what you need…….
Throughout history, cities have evolved symbiotically with technologies, both physically and socially. Here’s some tech I introduced that enabled fundamental restructuring of spatial relationships in sometimes remarkably complex and subtle ways.
Slack - 80% population (Daily Surveys to measure health) / Centralized Needs Lists - managers and community
IOT Devices for utility/people data - There are 570,000 local governments around the world. But only 2,500 are pursuing smart city projects.
Augmented Reality - show parts of city not built - in the future, anything we want we will have access to… in our reality..
new tools for understanding the world
City as Organism is also a paradigm. What does it look/Feel like?
It’s a high-functioning world view, in which 2 main conditions are present:
the city is a conscious reflection of the individuals who reside in it.
residents understand their success and wealth will amplify the s/w of those around them.
This is the opposite of how our economic paradigm works with zero sum exchange and our relationship to the city being one of survival or desensitized indifference or powerlessness to
Trash - pick up garbage
Imagine if in NYC whenever someone sees garbage, they thought “oh my house is messy. Let me clean that up b/c it’s a reflection of who I am.”
Frugality / Money - NYC, small home, but gym, clothes, dance classes, entertainment, furniture, property maintenance, food, and wifi, is provided for you. You’d turn off the lights when not in use if you knew it’d help the overall experiment work that is giving you so much.
to enabling city-as-organism….
just because you give someone everything that they should need to be happy doesn't mean that they will be happy.
actually we’ve learned you can give someone everything and their expectations would just go up.
For ex, last year in a survey, we learned #1 thing made people happy at Arco is large # of things to do… and the #1 thing that made people unhappy was many too many things to do.
The key is creating greater collective freedom by through awareness of the needs of the whole city. When more people are aware of the city-as-organism and what is actually needed and consumed, and understand themselves as a part of the larger context and self-organize to help things thrive with great efficiency.
While we’ve begun to map this shift, we know very little about the implications of these new modes of living.
Arcosanti has 45+ years of research, data, experiments, and media. It also has 40K visitors/year and 7k alumni. Little has been done with this potential…. I’ve seen this often in groups I’ve worked with - the conservative core dictates operational and business norms.
We know about the edge effect from Permaculture… that the edges of an ecosystem are where the most biodiversity exists. So as the city organism maximizes it’s edges, and democratizes engagement with it’s physical and virtual resources there there’s a massive influx of new ideas and value.
At FORM, Arcosanti’s largest event of the year, there were numerous “rules” that were violated (like quiet hours, media capturing, usually hierarchal decisions made autonomously). If done according to the “rules” with hyper-acuity to details, the innovation of this event would have been stiffled.
Centralize N/R to maximize self organized solutions. Often not necessary to solve directly… simply by becoming aware collectively, you often solve. the formula is
lettings ourselves know we want it…..believing its possible (Hard to do - to express what we want, Never neutral)
articulate it into network
Others can form a feedback loop to it can make it come true w/o our direct involvement. (this is the power of a focused community.
Case Study: Identified N/R of departments
This has been my main focus since arriving b/c it holds the key to Freedom and Democratic edges.
anyshare…. lists of n/r in groups. Since participated by everyone, owned by everyone, formed first completely cooperative business in US history to manage it.
it’s a very high state of community when everyone is aware of what the needs of the group are, and has the opportunity to use their unique gifts and skills to meet those needs… not just for the collective benefit, also for their personal benefit….
gaps of resources (wants) become opportunities.
difficulty in accepting that this many people want to help.
Increase awareness of whole - focus on receiving and self organizing
let everyone solve problems - hive mind - crowdsourcing
want =’s opportunity
if everyone focuses their energy on the same intention … like love or even something specific like building a building, is it possible for each step of the journey accelerates on the one before it… so it goes faster and faster to that collective goal.
that’s what arecosanti is here to experiment with.
New generation interested in growing Arcosanti into a micro-city urban laboratory which will create the most freedom for the most people possible.
The exact thing that being post gold rush will lead you to.. .it’s where people just walk around freely b/c their base needs are met, so they don’t have to work a perceived 40+ hrs / week b/c the systems are more efficient, and they simply listen for the needs of those around them and find ways to meet them with joy laughter openness and kindness.
there becomes a point of community living community where all this is the question anymore it's where the community is an organism functions with greater self-awareness within itself and every moment + people's dreams and the grounded reality is what it takes to have an organism thrives are one the same because people calibrated themselves to a larger consciousness not only is this possible but it's happening now by default and everywhere that we are meant happening.
It's happening now in Paris in New York Sydney… the power of it happening in small cases of courses that you can really understand how changes to these things can have profound impacts on the collective intelligence field, health, well-being and tconomic potential of the individual and collective.
The power of all this becomes clear, when the collectively held beliefs of the group allows the group to just become more self aware perpetually…. to become more itself perpetually… to realize that we all have human bodies, we know there is an up and a down… with our cyclic nature in all that is.. we ultimately want to have what we do paid fwd to future generations… b/c ultimately that future generation is us… it’s like taking care of our body. esp when we start to see the entire city as our body
Most are flying by the seat of their pants. Everywhere we look, we find cities that are just starting to grapple with the challenges of digital technology. A handful of cities are leading the way. But what can they teach the rest of us?
My dream is to have anyone join the experiment. Collaborate w/ brilliant people… to let them know their w/ needs, resources, and dreams have a place to test.
I invite you to make this a bottom-up, commons-centric, crowdsourced urban laboratory thrive as a microcosm for our larger cities. The stage is set… the instrument is here… you are invited to play.
