35% of all the existing papers are not
cited at all, and another 49% are cited
only once (n=1). This leaves about 16%
of the papers to be cited an average of
about 3.2 times each. About 9% are
cited twice; 3% , three times; 2%, 4
times; 1%, 5 times; and a remaining of
1%, six times or more."

"The main point which emerges is that citations
stand at the intersection between two
systems: a rhetorical (conceptual, cognitive)
system, through which scientists try to persuade
each other of their knowledge claims; and a
reward (recognition, reputation) system,
through which credit for achievements is
