MINING
CHARACTERISTICS
INTERPRETIVE
FOCUS
HERITAGE
INTERPRETATION
INTERPRETIVE
EMPHASIS
GROUP 1
Mining of Low Value Ores
Eg: Coal, Iron, Copper
Low value ores were
mined on a large scale
by major corporations
utilising large employee
workforces
On the grimness of
existence and/or
machinery of the
workforce
Often focused on a
nostalgic period
(just ‘before the war’)
and/or including
technological
advancements (in more
recent periods)
Processes & Technology
(advancements)
On extractive and
processing machinery,
usually of large-scale
and/or recently closed
mining operations
GROUP 2
Gold Mining
and the great Gold
Rushes in history
The early gold rushes
were characterised by
small groups of
independent miners
(California,Yukon and
Australian Gold Rushes)
On the exhilaration,
optimism and colour of
independent miners
seeking their fortune
Extending further back in
time to the mid- 19th
century, indeed often
‘freezing it in time’ (by
ignoring the present and
more recent mining)
Mining Environment (on
the towns) and Early
Prospector’s Lifestyle
Most notably at
Sovereign Hill Open Air
Museum and Columbia
Historic State
Park in California

Purchased by Andrew Wescott, a Fairbanks gold miner, in the late 90‘s realizing that the profitable
days of solo mining in interior Alaska had passed, rebuilt the mine and eventually became such a
popular stop for tourists that Wescott could not handle the increased business by himself, so in 1990
Wescott entered a partnership with the Binkley family of Fairbanks in order to better develop the mine.
A few years later,Wescott sold his stake in the mine to the Binkleys.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Allow at least 40 minutes for your visit. No need to book ahead,
unless there are over ten in your group - see "group bookings"
WHAT DO I NEED TO GO UNDERGROUND?
The tour underground can be muddy, especially during the
wetter months. Bring closed-toe footwear and a water proof
jacket just in case, your own torch if you have one, and plenty
of luck to strike it rich!
FACILITIES:
Snacks and cold drinks for sale on site, toilet facilities available,
bus & car parking, postcards and gold for sale, and picnic area.
SMALL SPACES!
If you or anyone else in your group, has a dislike for being in
confined dark spaces, then there are alternative activities for you
to enjoy instead of the underground section of the tour -
including gold panning!
